any ideas on how to keep visors or goggles from fogging up? I'm a pretty hot natured person. I use the anti-fog mask with the sticky stuff, usually take a mask with visor and flip it upside down with just the visor covering my eyes. Anyone have any of the Oakley glasses with the tiny vents at the top of the glasses? Do the cloth scrub caps help compared to the regular ones in the OR?

I have a hard time as well. Its a matter of trial and error, but here's what works for me:

keep mask loose at bottom
tape top across nose and cheeks

I have more luck with a regular mask and Oakley goggles than I do with the orange mask/shield combo. If wearing the latter, I pull the shield away from my face so that its not touching my forehead.

Haven't noticed a difference with the cloth caps. But I suppose if you are the sweaty forehead type, it might make a difference. I had an attending who used to roll a Kerlex around his head...looked a bit ridiculous but it worked to keep drips out of his eyes.

Good glasses and a regular mask taped across the nose will stop most problems. You can get a decent pair of clear shooting glasses at most sporting good stores for about $15 if you don't want to lay out big bucks for Oakleys. The upside down face mask trick works nicely to.

when you pinch the mask at the nose, pull the visor outward. it loosens it and doesn't sit so close to your face, so tends to be less foggy

I used to have a similar problem. Currently I use a cheap pair of goggles and one of the stickier masks kept loose at the bottom. What really helps is snagging a bottle of the anti-fog solution they use on the laparoscopes. Keeps me fog-free, baby!

Now back to your regularly scheduled posts.

i don't usuallyhave a problem with masks but for my loops I do use "FRED" that anti-fog liquid that is used in laparoscopic cases to keep the camera from fogging - works great. I sprinkle some on and wipe clean with paper towel before starting a case and no fogging...

You have to direct your exhaled breath out the sides of the mask so that the visor doesn't fog.

Pinch the mask at the nose, like a sharp, sharp pinch with your finger tips. Bend the portion of the mask just under your eyes inward, so it sits right into the maxilla. Tie the lower ties of the mask UP, not just behind your head -- this will open up the sides.

And if all else fails, just tell the circulator to "rip the damn visor off." 🙂

tape the heck out of the mask to your nose with medipore tape

Here's a trick that works for me. I fogged no matter how much tape and bending of the visor.
1. wear stand alone glasses (free from reps to hundreds...)
2. tie the top part of the mask over the ears at the occiput
3. take the bottom ties in front of the ears and tie on the crown of your head.
This will create folds on the sides that work like vents for you breath to exit. I still need a small piece of tape, but that's beacuase I sweat and the mask slips if I dont. This may look silly, but give it a try. It worked for me
