If one is sending a thank you letter to the attending interviewers is it also good form to send on the the resident who interviewed you as well

Good form but not necessary in larger programs. If you're applying to a plastics program w/ 1 resident per year it might be a good idea. I sent emails to some of the residents who spent a lot of time talking to me.

Absolutely. It only takes a couple of minutes and will be appreciated by the resident. Not sending a thank you can hurt you; sending one won't do anything but help.

What about using Thankyou cards?

I had my first interview last week and sent thank you emails immediately the day after to all my interviewers..should i be sending handwritten thank you notes too? whats the proper etiquette?

For those following my saga, I resigned from my program 2 weeks ago. I am back teaching at the same high school again as last year. The surprised look on teachers and the principals face was something - I spent a good bit of the day explaining to people.

Anyway, I requested a copy of my file from my program, and part of my official file was a copy of EVERY thank you letter I wrote - to faculty and residents alike. Ex. one resident (PGY2 this year) that I really liked is a confirmed bachelor (even though he is engaged now..???) anyway, I wrote a somewhat humorous note to him saying something like "See the paper this is written on? This is another reason to get married. Its called stationary. If I was single I would be writing this thank you note on an 8 X 11 piece of typing paper, but because I am married I am using pretty stationary. Thanks for the interview and would love to be there for residency". That is not the exact note but roughly the length and content. It was in my permenant file. I think I wrote something like 9 thank you letters and they were all in there.

Just a word to your mother....

E-mail would be fine for residents. And a short one at that, just a simple "thanks for taking the time to interview me / show me around the psych building / etc".

Cheers

In contrast to that, I know that at least one residency program at my school does not keep (or really even open) thank you notes from the interviewing residents. So I'm sure it's program and speciality dependent.
