Hello people. i'm new to the forum and so far i've read a lot of interesting and helpful things. Here's my situation:
International student, junior in college, plan to take DAT in july after organic 2 (do i really need organic 2 to do well in the DAT?) will apply to NYU,BU,Columbia,Howard, and Case. Will I be able to get alternative loans to cover ALL my expenses if i have a cosigner that is a US citizen? what if i have no cosigner?
Currently have a 4.0, will do research in june 05, spent a few days at a dentist's office, working on doing some volunteering. Really freaked out about the DAT, seems like my life depends on it (God Help Us). Okay wonderful people, your input is requested, Any other schools that look favorably on people like me? Any tips on getting financial help (non-government aid cos i dont qualify for those).
Thanks

Without a cosigner, you are not going to get alternative loans. You need a cosigner. Apply to Upenn early, you will be able to get the Dean's scholarship.

You do need a U.S. citizen as a cosigner in order to secure loans in the U.S. If you have a 4.0 thus far you are probably very studious and will do well on the DAT. I recommend that you obtain a copy of Kaplan's Blue Book and use it as a study guide. Also, and as mentioned in other threads, get your application and it's supporting materials (e.g. letters of recommendation) into AADSAS early (around June) as this will bode well for you. As zidanereal2003 mentioned you do have a good shot at Penn with your gpa (and assuming you will do well on the DAT). Penn is private and they do accept quite a few international students so I would encourage you to apply there as well. Best of luck!

Thank you so much guys. I appreciate your input and i will definitely apply to Upenn. Don't wanna seem too forward but how much is the dean's scholarship worth and what percentage of the tuition would it cover? And do i really need organic chem 2 to do well on the DAT? Thank you.

It is half of the tuition around $22,000.
I am sure you could do well in your DAT exam without taking organic 2.

Hey am an int student too- i got into dental school but am not going cause its tooo expensive and no financial aid ...... please make sure u apply to generous schools and that you have something figured out as to how u will finance youself - so that u dont end up like me .... i dont know which schools are generous but i know that UB and UNMC are certainly not - anyways good luck - i hope u get in and MOST IMPORTANTLY i hope you can actually attend d-school

What happened? Did you not have a cosigner? I'm thinking those schools you applied to are public colleges. International students are adviced not to apply to state schools. it's hard enuf for the out of state americans, the chances of getting in AND getting money? close to zero.

Isnt it true that in order to apply for any dental school the sudent needs to have a green card. Thats what i had been told when my immigration status was being changed.

That is what I was told as well. That is why I waited 2 years till I officially became a LPR. Some schools don't push on this issue too much, but the student has to suffer as he/she will not be getting sort of financial aid/help/advice.

Most state schools require a green card. Private schools like Upenn, Harvard don't require a green card. But it is harder for an international student to get into dental or medical school here in the US for several reasons.

ya i dnt have a cosigner... and i did apply mostly to public schools, and one private. But its not true that you cant apply to public schools if ure international. you can - i know for a fact because i talked face to face with the admissions staff of a public school and he told me that there was no problem about me being international - i knew from then that it may be an issue, thats why i had asked to double check - anyways besides if they dont take internationals why did they waste my time and interview me - and also waste someone elses time who could have been interviewing instead of me - i dont know its all very strange - but i think maybe its just kind of a thing that state schools dont take interantionals but they dont mention it because it'll majorly contradict their equal opportunity statement - o well im glad ure getting all this info so u will be on the right track when u apply

if you have good stats, apply to NYU early, you may be able to get a full ride.
