TMDSAS 2007: Advise and Status

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you fax your scores to baylor they will look at it. UTSA said no. I never talked to houston.

WHOA congrats on 30 on QR... it was not so easy for me. 😎

PAT 18 - 66.8%
QR 30 - 100%
RC 21 - 76.5%
BIO 21 - 93.5%
GC - 21 - 88.3%
OC - 17 - 54.8%
TS - 20 - 86.9%
AA - 22 - 96.1%

I'm happy with it. I wish I could have studied more for Organic. I didn't start studying for it until two days before the test and even then I spent most of the time taking practice tests for all 3 science tests. I probably spent 75% of my study time on Bio, because I needed it and 20% on Chemistry with the last 5% taken up by Organic, Math, RC, and PAT. I don't think my QR, RC, and PAT scores were hurt by not studying for them, but the Organic score definitely would have benefited from more time on that subject.

The math was very easy. I finished all the questions, then went back and double checked each answer and I still had 7 minutes left after that. For those that haven't taken the DAT, I really suggest putting your answer back into the equation when you solve for x to see that both sides are equal.

Do you guys suggest faxing my scores to the schools? Will that help me get an interview letter faster?

for real... QR was my WORST score lol DAMNNNNNNN THAT MATH

Undergrad: Fightin' Texas Aggie class of 2002 Whoop!
Major: Psychology
GPA: 3.87
Science GPA: 3.80
DAT: TS 22/AA 21/PAT 24
Applying To: Baylor, UTSA. UT-Houston, Oklahoma, Kentucky
Interviews: San Antonio (8/7)
Accepted: N/A
aggie.teacher, I just picked up a print out of aggies accepted to Texas Dental Schools for Fall 2005 Admission and put it into Excel. Both of our stats compare pretty well against those students.

After removing duplicates (students admitted to more than one school with a match for Sci. GPR, Major, and DAT-AA) it was a total of 45 aggies.

You would rank tied with one person for 10th in science GPA and tied with 5 people for 4th in DAT-AA. I would be tied with one person for 7th in science gpa and tied with two people for 2nd in DAT-AA. Thirteen people in the group were accepted to all 3 Texas schools and nine were accepted to two out of three.

Since this is a group of people that were accepted from our school and we are near the top of it, I'm feeling pretty good about our chances of getting in somewhere.

How did you guys replied baylor, like in actully hand writing and mail to their main office? by the way congras to aggie on 30 QR, I got 30 on that as well.

Hey all,
I'm a texas resident and I am going to applying to dental school next year. I was confused on what classes count as science gpa and I've done some research on the forums and haven't quite gotten a clear answer.
I am a nutrition major and I heard that all my nutr classes would count as part of my science gpa.
I was wondering if health and exercise science classes would count as well?
Your input will be appreciated. I ask because yall have already been through the process...Looking forward to hearing from you all.
Thanks, 😳

I have no idea what they count. TMDSAS will figure it out for you. I know they count Math classes.

Any other "science" class can fit into "other science" and if they don't think that's where it goes, they'll change it. I personally counted nutrition as other science, but not first aid, health or kinesiology classes even if they had a physiology component. AADSAS is more specific, I think, specifying BCP and other science courses. I.e. BCP = Anatomy, Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Botany, Chemistry, Genetics, Medicine, Microbiology, Neuroscience, Pathology, Pharmacology, Pharmacy, Physics, Physiology, Zoology. Other science = Agriculture, Animal Sciences, Astronomy, Clinical Sciences, Nutrition, Engineering, Health Technology, Geology, Kinesiology, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Plant Sciences, Sports Sciences.

If in doubt you can always ask your Professional School Advisor. Ours here at TAMU is great.

Lazuras, are you going to one of those interview workshops?

Yes on the 31st

Haha, i found the SDN interview feedback area to be very helpful, have you checked it out?

I wouldn't worry too much about your interview. Yes getting the interview is important but being yourself is more important. Tips on interview at baylor and UT houston.

If you get to Baylor early, you get started earlier on your interview. They seat you in an office lobby and call your name and you rotate through three interviewers each lasting about 20 minutes. I thought the Baylor interview was a little exhausting becuase it seemed like I was repeating what I was saying over and over. If you get there before 9, your usually out of there by 2:30pm.

Houston on the otherhand, is usually an hour long conversation with a faculty member. Just 1 on 1. The Houston interview process last from 8-4.. pretty long day.

Good luck on the interview everyone.

are there specific days which texas schools interview on? like are interviews only on monday/fridays or something like that?

SA said that they only interview on Mondays.

Wow. Has it really been 2 years since I applied? Good Lord, time has flown by. Good luck to all of you!

Hey guys. I'm having difficulties applying with the tmdsas website. I have some basic questions regarding what to fill in. Where can I get help with this?

Yeah. My questions are like, what course number do I type in and there was this one option where they want me to list all the other schools I'm applying to but they only give me 4 lines and I'm planning on applying to a lot more than just 4 schools so instead I typed something like, "all american dental school". Would that be sufficient enough? Questions more relating to the mechanics, I guess.

The course is is like "Bio 113". I guess you can always abbreviate for the dental schools. Saying "all schools" tells them you haven't really thought out why you want to go to certain schools and I would avoid that. I would narrow my list down, if I were you. I guess it tells you something if they only give you 4 lines...There is a "Section Overview" link on each page. Have you found that?

Wow, that must be expensive. TMDSAS has an instruction page you can bring up and it tells you everything. Type in your course numbers as your transcript shows them. If in doubt call them.

Whatever floats your boat! If you don't mind me asking, what kind of situation/stats are you dealing with? If they are low/avg, there are some schools you won't be competitive in...I wouldn't waste my money, especially if they are a WICHE school or out of state. If they are great, why so desparate? Relax!!

Hey everyone! Long time no post cuz of work at Halliburton KBR. I got a letter from Houston for an interview Aug 28. From what the form says.. Houston only does monday interviews since if u have to reschedule, u have to choose a different monday. Interview for San Antonio is coming up in one week... eeekkk 😱

Well yeah, I do have a low GPA but I have reasons for that. What do you mean some schools won't be competitive?

Some of the schools that are harder to get into might not be worth applying to. I dunno...I'm just pretty cheap, so when it comes to spending 100s of dollars to apply, (in your case, 1000s) I just want to know I have a pretty good chance at the schools I do apply to. I'm not applying to California schools just for kicks....ya know?

Congrats, Tux! See you on Monday 😛

i agree with aggie teacher. Some schools may look at your application everywhere as kind of a desperate attempt at getting into somewhere. obviously you should not apply to schools with top GPA/DAT. For example. Nebraska, Harvard, Colorado, OKlahoma all have avg 3.7 gpa or higher. Harvard, Columbia, UCLA all have the 3 highest DAT avg. If it were me i wouldnt bother with my stats and save me some money.

For anyone that took the DAT as the last part of your application process, how long did it take from the time you took the DAT until you received your first interview invite?

I'm not worried about it now because I only took the DAT last week, but I am curious about which point I should start checking the mail for interview letters.

Also, how long after taking the DAT did it show up on the TMDSAS App. Status page?

I took the DAT on 06/20/06 i think ...MAYBE the 27th...but either way it showed up on TMDSAS 7/13/06 which means the schools received it maybe a day or two prior, most likely.

Where did you sit at the interview workshop. A lot of that info was common sense, not awfully useful.

My questions exactly.
I think this applies to LazurasDC
BTW Laz, did you end up faxing your unofficial scores to Baylor?
Because you got an invite from Baylor pretty quick.

I ended up missing the workshop. My wife's grandmother died yesterday so we had to head out of town.

I may just go pick up the packet and not attend the actual workshop. I know there is another one on the 25th.

Has anyone taken a visit to any of the schools outside of an interview?

I have to go to S.A. for a funeral and I'm thinking about checking out the dental school there if they have some sort of tour like A&M does.

I've been in touch with a lady named Barbara about their tours. You actually shadow students for the day. The number is 210-567-6082. We're in the middle of a very long game of phone tag, but I hope to hear from her again, soon.

Sorry to hear about the grandmother in law.

As far as your queston about tours...I went with Pre-Dental Society last fall to UTSA, it was awesome. The doctor took us around and we got to see cadavers and went to a little lab where dental students let us drill and put amalgum in fake teeth and practice with wax. then they fed us fajitas and all that good stuff.

Like I said, there wasn't TOO much that wasnt common sense covered in the workshop, the packet will be helpful. has a lot of info on each school and different things and itnerview feedbacks from each school. I'm reading it right now actually.

Ditto! Share the wealth!

not that I know of. sorry. take it up with your opsa office 😉

Just checkin' in to wish all ya'll with interviews next week good luck!

Also wanted to have our thread on the first page again🙂

Well, I'm leaving tomorrow morning for San Antonio for my interview on Monday! I'll be sure to give you the scoop! Any prayers for me and Tux are much appreciated 🙂

I am currently in the process of completing my TMDSAS application and I had a question about one of the optional essays . . .

"Briefly discuss any unique circumstances or life experiences that are relevant to your application which have not previously been presented. "

For some reason this makes me thing they are looking for things like, I had cancer when I was 12, or I grew up in foster homes. Is this a question looking for ways in which you have been disadvantaged or is it a normal question to givs us the opportunity to discuss our strengths??

I was advised to leave that question blank unless I had some horrible semester with a good explanation (death in the family, bad illness, etc.) that was not mentioned in other parts of the app. I left if blank.

In other news, my DAT scores were received by TMDSAS on 8/4/06.

Now I can start checking the mail every day and getting depressed when I don't have any letters from dental schools.

This is a great thread!!! I have enjoyed all of the insight and experience. I got my TMDSAS done and done in July. Yee ha! I got an in terview At UT Houston on the 21st . I interviewed last year at UTSA and Houston. Both are great and have done a good job creating great programs. I dont know anything about Baylor yet... I just retook my DAT on the 2nd of August. 😀 Last year i had the flu and a 100+ temp when i took it , and you know it is much harder under those conditions  If you have not interviewed at Texas schools, do not be nervous I had a great time and everyone is really nice and supportive. they really just want to know about who you are. So have fun and be real. It seemed that they could tell who was and who wasn't. I could tell and it was uncomfortable to watch someone trying too hard to be smart or funny or whatever it was kind a like watching a puppy play with a stick of dynamite 🙄 Best of luck to all!!!

Soooo....San Antonio went well! Way laid back and everyone was really friendly. They interviewed 12 of us (including Tux)...my count was 7 guys, 5 girls. All the applicants were really nice. Talks all morning about why we should go to San Antonio, financial aid, and how their computer curriculum works. We then had lunch with 2 students and asked all kinds of questions...good food. Tour of facilities with students (they might be your student interviewer, so pay attention when they tell you their name!) They were really nice and gave us the run down on our faculty interviewer before we went to interviews. I wasn't really asked a single "interview question" aside from what got me into dentistry. We just chatted. We all met back at the end, took a survey, and answered a short essay question about dental school applicants. Great day...look forward to it!

Also got an interview from Baylor today...Sept. 15! Whoop! 🙂

got my houston letter last week for interview on sept 11th.

Yes...the interview wasn't bad at all. Got to meet people including aggie.teacher (didnt get to say bye before you left since i had to go to my car to get my parking ticket hehe). Food was good..lots of cake left. My student interviewer was actual the one that took us around and talked to us and my professor interview was the dean that was talking to us at the beginning...therefore i already had a preview who i was going to talk to *LUCKY ME* :luck: . The interivews were easy.. chatted more than really talked about dentistry...long drive...tired...but i had my baby waybe drive me back and had yummy sushi 😍 well..me headache... good luck to the rest of yall.

Here were my questions for San Antonio
Student Interviewer: So what caused you to decide to be a dentist and when did that occur?
Why dentistry instead of computer science, art, or medicine?
Any questions?
Professor Interviewer: Why dentistry?
What do you do for fun? (She thought I was a bookworm)
I see that you are 20, what influenced you to graduate early?
Do you have any questions for me?

Advise: Ask the students that you eat lunch with and figure out what the professor interviewer does in order to ask them stuff they know a lot about. The more they talk, the less you have to talk ^_~

Oh and you might get chicken breast for lunch soooo learn the proper way to use forks and knifes or else you’ll embarrass yourself.

Hey Tux and Aggie.teacher,

Thanks for the feedback from the SA interview. It really is a great help to the rest of us.
