Has this happened to anyone? I showed up today for day one of step III and proceeded to sit there for 2 hours while the prometric employee contacted someone (I don't know who) because the test wouldn't get downloaded to their site, or something like that. It happened for all 5 of us taking step III today there - two of them had taken day 1 on the previous day. Eventually, after 2 hours, we were told we would have to reschedule, and we would have to contact NBME.

As everyone (except probably the licensing authorities themselves and the testing center) knows, NBME doesn't administer step 3. It only administers step I and II. Why the heck this occurs I have no idea, nor do I know what either of them has to do with USMLE.

We spend several hundred dollars to take this test, not to mention the aggravations that go into scheduling it - paperwork, multiple different licensing entities, etc. In addition, the demands of medical residency are such that taking time off for this test is a burden and not easily done. I would expect that, given the high fees we have to pay, that things should work efficiently and when they do not, all effort should be made to reschedule or accomodate us, without making us have to do all this work. As an example, I was told to contact nbme after my test was cancelled. There are too many licensing entities and potential places to contact, and it seems as though the burden is on the applicant to take care of all this, and when every single medical school graduate has to take this test, one would think the process would be streamlined and free from hassle.

As it stands now, I will have to take further time off from my residency at an inconvenient time, not to mention that my studying time has been somewhat wasted. The response I seem to get when looking for answers or assistance seems to be either endless customer service lines or "please contact this entity" and so forth. If I had known that having my test cancelled at the last minute was a remote possibility, I would have scheduled it for earlier this month. Because - I cannot take time off in august to take it (my rotation won't let me). In september I can, but not during the first two days of the month when I have to be there to help a new resident. When does my scheduling permit expire? 9/5/05 - labor day. There is no testing on weekends.

I would appreciate knowing what the problem actually is and why an exam that is administered every single day can have such an issue. And an addition - there are too many entities involved here, and it makes things much more complicated than it should be. One has to go through FSMB to register for the USMLE (as well as being told to arrange ourselves for contacting the appropriate state medical board, and NBME for our previous step I and II scores), and take it through a prometric test center, and then be told to contact NBME when something goes wrong. A test that every medical graduate takes and is administered every day should not have these hoops to jump through, particularly for the cost that is involved.

+pissed+ +pissed+ +pissed+ I want a refund and an apology and I want all these stupid organizations to coordinate with each other, since again, THIS IS A TEST THAT EVERY MEDICAL SCHOOL GRADUATE HAS TO TAKE.

So they have deigned to grant me a 3 month extension on my eligibility (without any additional fee).

Everyone should make sure their testing site has their act together before you go for this test. Their suggestion to me was to "schedule a time early in your eligibility window so that if events like this occur you can still reschedule within your window." As if taking time out of residency is always an easy thing to do. To my knowledge, the USMLE bulletin does not say anything about this possibility.

I had a somewhat similar experience when taking Step 1. My mouse died three separate times, I was finally "allowed" to shift to a new computer, the employees at the testing center were totally incompetent and could have cared less that my time was running out while they talked on the phone as I was frantically trying to get some help. While I can understand random glitches in the system, this also happened to the guy sitting right next to me, and a classmate in the same room had her comp shut down three times on her without warning. Then one of the employees said that this happens "about three times a week."
I wrote in a complaint letter to nbme, and my score came out fine in the end, so there's probably nothing more I can do.....but I thought this was seriously unacceptable given how important this test is.
Don't take a test at the Hazelwood, MO prometric center! (suburb of st. louis). HUGE mistake!

Yeah - I don't really know what to say or who to complain to. Spending all this money should require them to bear a bit more responsibility for what goes on other than simply "allowing you to reschedule."

Did you ever get a response to your complaint letter? I wrote complaint letters to USMLE, NBME, FSMB, and prometric today.

I started and posted to a few threads about a month ago dealing with prometric problems and step I. unfortunately, what you have experienced isn't in the least bit uncommon.

I get the sense it isn't uncommon at all. But at the same time, the response to it that they have still continues to be inappropriate. Prometric should have a plan of action when things happen. A number to call, a way to reschedule, extra spots for those who are effected, etc.

Not related to the USMLE, but a friend of mine was taking his boards at Sylvin, and his computer froze with 2 questions left on his exam. He had to retake the puppy 👎

A freaking 6 hrs exam, and all of it to waste. I remember he called me up literally exploded on Prometric and the testing center. F bombs were flying left and right

What did they do? I am becoming curious as to what the responses from these entities are? Do they keep saying, "I apologize, doctor" and stuff like that? In all of my complaints so far I have told them it is all unacceptable. We'll see.

So I got an email a few days ago from the usmle people. It looked like a form email saying my complaint was being reviewed and I would be contacted soon. I wrote back saying I preferred they send me postal mail, which I had stated in my letter. I like to have documentation, and don't want them to start calling me up and sending me useless emails. That's all so far.....
I think several other people have complained about the center I tested at also. Apparently there was a power outage a few days before I was there which forced people to start the test like 3 hours late and stay till almost 9 pm to finish. I guess it was that or lose your cash......sucks....
