MUO Class of 2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm waiting to see how much $ I get and also if I get in anywhere down south. We'll see...

I'll be there! This might seem a bit early, but have you heard anything about good places to live??? I can't wait until August! Yay!

I'm still trying to decide between MUO and Wright State! 🙂

Congrats class of 2010! I'm currently an M1 who's lucky (?) enough to be right in the middle of the anatomy block. Feel free to throw me a PM if you have any questions... 🙂

Have you done any work yet in the free clinic?

whats the daily schedule like, how long are you in classes...?

I am heading to MUO as well. Looking forward to meeting everyone. I plan to move across the country in July.

RE: Housing; I lived in Toledo a couple years back. Stayed at Cambridge Woods Apts off Airport Highway. Nice, older apts, good management, mid 400's for rent. Close to school.

I got alternate list 🙁 I don't know how I could have done any better, I absolutely nailed the interview.

hey cozmosis, im in the exact same situation, i thought my interviews were flawless, i dont know what happened.

Hopefully I can answer all the MS1-to-be questions you have 🙂

-Regarding the curriculum: There are 3 main blocks for the year and another 2 that run throughout the year which are Problem Based Learning (meets every Wed from 8-10 in small groups that change with each block) and Fundamentals of Clinical Pracice (FCP) (involves an ethics section at the beginning of the year, standardized patient interviewing, and a few other things). Block 1 is Biochem, which lasts 11 weeks and consists of 4 exams and a cumulative disease/clinical based final. In this block you will be finished at noon a few days a week, and between 3-4 the other afternoons, when you'll have ethics lectures, standardized pt interviewing, and the occassional Biochem lecture until 3.
Block 2 is about 16 weeks long and is anatomy/histo/and embryo and labs. Lectures almost always run 8-12 with anatomy lab 2-3 times a week until about 4-4:30; you'll also have more interaction with standardized pts some afternoons and other FCP lectures. The last main block is Neuo and Behavioral, which I have not gotten to yet but I hear involves more days finishing at noon and a LOT fewer labs.

-Regarding housing, most people either get condos or rent. Finding a safe, close, inexpensive place in Toledo is not tough, a lot of students live in Cambridge Woods, Deerfield Run, Orchard Lakes (a little further away but VERY nice), Glendale Village, and Heather Hills.

-Yes, I have gotten a chance to volunteer twice at the Community Care Clinic, once very recently. Its a great experience and is always very busy; it lets you put all of the work you do with "fake" patients into a real situation, which is really fun.

Again, if you have any questions feel free to PM or post them. I am always looking for a little distraction from studying anatomy 😉

4th year mco student here (it'll always be mco to me). pm me if any of you have any questions whatsoever.

😕 Has anyone heard anything about fin aid letters. How are we suppose to make decision regarding which school to attend if they don't send the award letters until june.?

Unless you've got a job now and making a really, really good salary don't worry about it.....everyone gets all of the financial aid money we are allowed by law. It also doesn't matter what your parents make either, and you're going to get the same federal aid at MUO as you are at any other school (up to $38,500/year in Stafford loans). Scholarships on the other hand.....they use them to recruit, so they'll have to award them in the next couple months.

Are any of you guys from out of state, and if so how'd you make up the difference in aid money vs costs? I'm thinking I'll probably take out private loans, but I was just wondering if you had any advice.

You'll only pay out of state tuition for first year- after that, you will have established ohio residency and can pay in-state tuition. If I remember, I took about 10-12K in private loans that first year. If you have a roomate, your cost of living will likely be less, so you could opt to take out less private loans next year.

I am also out of state and have wound up taking out less than $4,000 in private loans while not having roomates (a LOT less than I had originally planned!), partly because of some new loans I was able to take out through MUO for a MUCH better interest rate and deferral. I have realized that in the long term the one year out-of-state is really a drop in the bucket, especially compared to many other private schools with much higher tuitions for the entire four years. It also depends on how much, if any, undergrad and personal debt you have, as well as your spending habits while you're in school. Don't sweat the out-of-state thing or let it keep you away from MUO if this is where you want to be; there are literally dozens of out-of-staters in our class and we are all able to get enough in loans to live comfortably and not stress about not being able to pay them off 🙂

Hey Everybody!

I've been accepted to a couple of schools in Ohio, MUO, Ohio State and Wright State. Right now I am deciding between MUO and Ohio State. I live in Toledo and all my family is here, so that is why I might want to stay here, but I'm leaning towards Ohio State. There are a lot of places to live in Toledo, and fortunately the med school isn't near the undergrad institution, so you won't have to worry about sharing a complex with crazy, partying undergrads as much.

I'm going to be filling out my FAFSA in a couple of days, and I'm crossing my fingers for some scholarships from either school. That would be sweet!

Is anyone else here from Toledo?

Hello All,
I was really impressed with MUO, probably going there next year and excited. Toledo is not that bad, and anyway we'll be studying alot. I have one question to current 3rd and 4th year students, do you feel you get good clinical experience, i.e. making (small) decisions and getting ready for clinical boards. What about subinternships. Is there a mentorship program or a lot of guidance when thinking about residencies, just wondering...because I know how great the first 2 years are already

Quick question, I have a MAC, do you guys think that'll be a problem. I'd hate to give it up but will if it's necessary.

MACs work fine for whatever you have to do with the laptops. There are several people with MACs in our class. Pretty much the only thing you need the laptop for is histology lab since everything is virtual slides. A lot of people (myself included) don't even use a laptop at all....I just watch the projected image on the big screen in the front of the lecture hall. I used one at the beginning but I learn better just listening to the presentation and following it on the screen. A lot of people also use them for PBL cases every Wednesday, but they aren't required.

I might be there! I loved the school during the interview and the year before when I visited it during spring break. I have been fortunate and have a few options so it'll be a tough decision.

I'm not one to pay much attention to rankings and such, but out of curiosity, has anyone visited MUO and a school that is like top 20 (US News or whatever you like) and have anything to say for comparison purposes? I interviewed at WashU and Duke and both were incredibly impressive. On the other hand, MUO was also VERY impressive. Their curriculum seems very well integrated. You also can't ignore the 100% pass rate on the step 1 boards. That's better than pretty much every other school at which I interviewed.

Not to mention the environment 🙂 You could tell the attitude was one of community as opposed to competition. That's what I'm looking for -- definitely did not seem that way at places like WashU.

Good luck to everyone! I hope I am lucky enough to meet you all!

Peace.

I'm withdrawing. Good luck to any hopefuls :luck: .

hey guys,
For those of you current students, there's an MUO vs. Drexel thread in the preallo. forum and a couple people have posted about skinheads and the KKK in Toledo. That's just so crazy and scary, I didn't know that stuff still existed. Is there really a movement like that in Toledo?

Hi All,

My girlfriend is a nurse and she's looking at MUO's NP (masters) program and loves it. Sooo it's looking more and more like MUO. I'm hoping everything works out nicely. Check this out:

http://umc.meduohio.edu/physicianapp/physearch.jsp

If you just click "ALL" and click search it'll show all the physicians. It's pretty interesting... It looks like they recruit a lot of talent from outside of the U.S. Their chairpeople are typically from places like UNC/Duke/Case, etc. A lot of people are from MUO, which means they either loved it there and wanted to stay or they couldn't get a job somewhere else. I am hoping for the former (and I know lotsa physicians from MUO who aren't at MUO so methinks it is the former).

Peace.

Might as well make these repeat posts useful.

I actually interviewed there the day after that KKK stuff was in the news. That's way blown out of proportion. Dr. Burns told me that the group that started it isn't even from Ohio, and it began because of two neighbors having a property line dispute (the neighbors weren't of the same race).

The city I live in and go to undergrad in is in Ohio and there are KKK things all the time. Usually people just protest them and move on. The world is still racist; I'm not caucasian and I'm not worried about going to MUO.

Ok, every time I posted throughout the course of yesterday it gave me an error... didn't know it actually posted each time. I wish we could delete posts.

I wish I had something useful to say. I'm glad to hear that the KKK stuff isn't as crazy as I was thinking.

Any current MUO students involved in research of any kind? How'd you fit it in? Is there a good mechanism for finding a research advisor in an area of interest or is it basically "look around and hope something works"? I'm trying to ascertain the differences I'd encounter between MUO and Case, where a research internship is required for 4 months. Thanks!

Current MUO students/Toledo Residents:

Has anyone ever lived at Orchard Lakes Apartments? My fiance and I are looking into these. Please let me know your impressions. Also, other recommendations? Is the Holland area affordable?

Thx!

I have published research here, and they paid me $3000 to do it. It is pretty easy to find a mentor. PM me with questions.

I think there are at least a couple people doing research during the school-year as first years. I'm doing this summer before 2nd year. We have 14 weeks off for the summer, and the research program is funded for 10 weeks. I think it's a total of $3300 for those ten weeks. During March they are going to post a listing of PIs willing to accept medical students into their labs for the summer to work on a project. Or you can set something up on your own like I did.

Orchard Lakes is a really nice place, but a little pricier than you have to pay IMO. You could live in other places that are a little older and pay less. I think they run 650-700 for a 1BR with no utilities included. There are several apartments that include gas in their monthly rent. Heather Hills Apartments on heatherdowns charges $574/month and that includes a balcony, washer/dryer, and gas bill......you're only responsible for electricity.

Thanks for your responses mazerati and hall! I was wondering: are there any actual houses near MUO (within walking distance?) I lived on-campus undergrad and I loved being so close to everything. It might be more beneficial for m'lady and me to get a house. I've heard mixed reviews of the living areas near MUO, but I don't know if that applies to apartments alone. Thanks again!

i would appreciate it if someone could help me: im currently on the waitlist at muo, im out-of-state (california), and i would be going here for sure if i get off the waitlist. so my question is, does anyone have any idea of how much the waitlist moves, especially for the oos students?

I would like to find a nice place near MUO and UT. Are there any Condominiums or townhouses in the area? Any lofts downtown? Any current MUO students where do you live?

I would say 75% of the renters in my class rent immediately around, south, or west of MUO. Some of the places around the school (within a half-mile) aren't the nicest, but they are dirt cheap. There are some more expensive ($450-600) and nicer apartments south and west of MUO on Heatherdowns. There are also some pretty good places on Airport around I-475. There are actually some really nice condos/townhouses at the corner of Glendale and Detroit that are within a mile of school, and there are several more condos/townhouses around Heatherdowns and Reynolds. Most condos are going to run $105-120,000 I would guess. There are more scattered around but these two areas are the ones I am familiar with.

Also a possibility are some houses around MUO that will run you 85,000-110,000. There are a few homeowners in the first year class, so you may want to consider that as well. Of course you have to mow the grass and shovel snow.....

Does anyone know if there is a formal 2nd look weekend? I'm excited to visit again and see how it is. It would be cool to do this with other prospective students around. If there is none, perhaps I will make my own...any thoughts?

Let me just tell you how excited I am to be attending MUO in the fall! Regarding apartments, I've heard about Orchard Lakes, The Ridge, and Heather Hills... they all seem nice, but what are some other pretty decent places to live around campus? Anyone with experience around the area (current MUO students) or people looking at appts throw in your input. I really appreciate it! Also, if anybody's in need of a roommate PM me or e-mail me at [email protected].

Congrats everyone, and good luck to everyone who's looking at MUO!

Thanks for the info Hallm! How close are those houses? Any neighborhoods within walking distance?

I'm also interested in the whole 2nd look weekend thing; if there isn't one I will probably be visiting around Easter time.

And finally, anyone know where the match list is for MUO? Is it posted online? If not, any of the current peeps at MUO give a quick summary? High points, low points? Thanks to all!

Quiet on the thread 🙂 Just thought I'd say that today I met a physician who graduated from MCO (oh yes, the old school name) in 94 and got a residency in anesthesiology at Texas Heart or whatever that HUGE hospital is down there. He's got ridiculous credentials as far as certifications and specializations go. He says he loved MCO and is gonna answer questions for me 🙂 W00t. Lookin more and more MUO everyday.

Also, I totally forgot that there are match list summaries in our interview packets for the last 2 years. It'd be nice to see this year's list, though, if anyone has access to it. Peace.

Camel,
Those houses I was referring to are across the road from MUO's campus on the southern border (Glendale Ave.). You could probably walk from the closer houses, but during the winter it would be pretty cold. There are bike racks around the buildings so you could also bike.

This year's match just happened a week ago today. They posted the results around the admissions/student life/student affairs offices. Some highlights that I remember:

12 Anesthesiology
0 Derm
1 Urology
4 Ortho
1 Neurosurgery
3 Opthalmology
25 Internal medicine
15 Family Practice

Class size it 145 first year and there are always a few people that don't want to go through the match or practice or that quit early on or whatever else, so total number is probably in the 135-140 range. I think it was 56% specilized and 44% primary care (IM, Peds, Family practice). This is by no means a full list and I may have gotten a couple of the numbers mixed up. Just for a comparison i remember that there were 3 or 4 derm last year and 7 urology last year. So I don't know if students in this year's class weren't interested in derm and urology or if they just didn't match. I also didn't look yet at the individual hospitals/universities where everyone was going. That's all posted, but didn't look at it today.
