Just want to apologize for this post since I know it gets on peoples nerves, but I do need the help. I'm an MS3 at an osteopathic school and I can't decide between ophtha and anesth. Before someone says it, I did use the search button but didn't find anyone else in my same position. So if someone could take the time to comment I would appreciate it greatly. I need the cold hard truth on what my chances are, because if they are extremely slim then I won't waste my time. My USMLE is 229/92, I worked as an ophthalmic assistant for 2 years in undergrad, have a few honors already half way through 3rd year and am a normal person so I probably won't screw up any interviews. I have next to no interest in research. My top choice is ophtha but I know I could be potentially happy with gas as well. Could someone tell me if I should bother applying for ophtha or if its wishful thinking for a DO with semi-solid board scores? Thanks a lot.

Anyone? I know that I can't be the only one in this position.

I actually don't know the stats for DO applicants. As monkey's post illustrates, your USMLE scores are the average for those applicants who matched this year. I think the "few honors" that you have so far are steps in the right direction. The rest comes down to you. How bad do you really want to be an ophthalmologist? You need a stellar letter of rec or two from an ophthlamologist/s if you really want to match into an ophtho residency. sometimes one of the best ways to obtain such letters is too work really hard for one by picking up a research project. So in your case, the fact that you "have next to no interest in research" won't help your cause. I think every year, many of the newly matched apps learn that there is no set formula for the ophtho residency match; many factors are involved. So I think you need to answer a few more questions before you decide "if you should bother applying for ophth[o]?" How bad do you really want all of this? Talk to a few more people outside of this forum who are involved in ophthlamology academia. develop a strategy (sub-i's, research, letters of rec, etc). if you are capable of accomplishing these tasks, then go for it. If all of this hard work will be too much for you, then gas ain't that bad of a job. Good luck!
