Anybody know if it's possible to switch programs after you have matched? I've already matched last year to a very good ophtho program, and was very happy at that time. I will be starting at that program this July. However, because of personal issues, I would now very much like to move to New York. Anybody have suggestions?

You can work out trades, but there is no set procedure for this AFAIK. You would need first to find a program willing to accept you. That is going to be the hard part. The next part is getting their acceptance in writing and giving your present program adequate notice. Giving them plenty of time is very important. If they are expecting you in July, you need to get moving fast.

I'm assuming that I would have to find someone in NY that would be willing to trade? Since it appears all the ophtho spots have been filled, unless I'm mistaken... Is there any way of finding this out?

It isn't just finding someone who is willing to give up a spot or even to trade your spot for theirs, the program has a say as to who is going to fill it. Likewise, the program you have been accepted to has to agree to accept the trade as well. This is a four-party exchange. Either program may prefer, for instance, to select another candidate from their rank list who didn't match.

I guess it's a long shot. If anybody going to a NY program next year wants to go to the West Coast instead, let me know :luck:
