I'm really not sure. There's a couple issues at play. First, Penn used to accept more students than it does now through what was called "Franklin Scholars". This program guaranteed funding for years 3 onwards, but not for years 1 and 2. This made class sizes more like 35-40 students, with a handful receiving full funding and the rest under this other program. As you can imagine, drop-out rates were higher then, for this and other reasons. I'm not sure when Franklin Scholars stopped taking in new students (5+ years ago?), but when it did class size dropped to that 16-22 per year that it is now. Some of the current graduatates are from that time when class sizes were larger.

I think the primary reason though is that it just so happened that a bunch of people graduated together. In 2004 and 2005 14 and 17 students graduated respectively, and I think this 2006 group includes alot of students who are graduating in increased times (I know of a 9 and 10 year) plus the large group of students who would have graduated anyways.

I hope that makes sense. The school takes around 20 students per year now. Because graduation time is not certain, there can be a certain oscillatory pattern to the number of graduates per year.

Was wondering whether anyone knows about UCLA MSTP matches. Thanks!

SUNY-Downstate
(yup...we have MD/PhD's too)

OHSU - IM (Research Pathway)
Columbia - Neuropathology
SUNY-Downstate - Dermatology
SUNY-Downstate - Ophthalmology
UMDNJ-RWJ - Radiology
St. Barnabas (NJ) - General Surgery
AECOM/Montefiore - Radiation Oncology

Pretty good class for this place. Most MD/PhDs we've ever graduated in one year. The two prelims are going to BI (NYC) and NYU. That surgery match was brutal. I know 2 people, one PhD (above) and one AOA, both with 2 first author papers who matched to their #5 places.

Haven't seen this anywhere. I'd just check out UCSD's MSTP match since the schools have a similar reputation and the students will have a similar (i.e. socal) mindset. If anybody has the real deal on UCLA though, that'd be sick.

If you do, please get the past three years worth of match info - otherwise, I'm still calling/writing their office.
