ChaldoAl, thanks for posting the match list, broseph! Yeah, I'm still waiting on a few schools too. Good luck with UCLA!

No prob and thanks likewise goodluck with yours....I decided to look up broseph on urbandictionary since I had an idea of what it was but wanted to be sure.

3. broseph

Used primarily as a substitute for, "Damn you're pretty ****ing cool and sometimes I wish we could have sex even though we're two really, really, extremely hetero males."

....I'll take it as a compliment.

What's up Sans...you say hoping....what's your status?

I know MSU has a relatively small class, but damn, this is ridiculous. Anyone here choosing MSU on May 15?

I am.

Holler back youngin.

anybody have their housing set up already?

I'm checking places out next week. Someone told me that practically all med students stay in Club Meridian, Central Park, or Berry Tree appts so I'm checking there first.....

Hola,

I'm flying into Mich this Friday to check out housing, banking, and other shiz....holler if you need some info about anything. I'll keep you guys posted on which ones are worth looking at.

Alvin

I just got back last night and I got a lot of great information. Basically, the housing market there is pretty student-accomadating. There are apts all over the place, but the three that I heard were "good" or had a lot of other med students were Berrytree Apts, Club Meridian, and The Club at Chandler Crossings.

Berrytree is the closest to the med school, bout half a mile away, definitely walking distance. They have 2bed/2bath and 1/1 apts. I didn't see how much the 1bed (675 sqft) apts were but I think it is somewhere around $595. The 2 /2 (1000 sqft) is $795 and all utilities are included except electricity (and I forget if internet/cable is included).
Pros: - Close to campus
- As cheap as you will get for your own room.
- All utils (including heat=$$$) except elec is included
- Supposedly most med students live here

Cons: - Kinda old
- Apts seemed stuffy and lighting isn't great
- No real amenities (No washer/dryer in apt, gym is kinda wack, etc)
- First floor is underground ...kinda, so you have weird high windows which are basically ground level from outside (nice view of people's shoes)

Club Meridian is about 2 miles away from campus and is a little newer than Berrytree. They are pretty much priced the same, $785 for a 2 bed/2ba, $735 for 2bd/1ba (not worth it), $680 for 1bd/ba. They have a special right now where they pay first months rent or utilities for a year (PHONE, CABLE AND INTERNET) and supposedly a free year at Gold's gym (which is 3 miles/5 min from Club Meridian).

Pros: - A lil newer building
- Pretty quiet
- Nice Move-in special
- 3rd floor has vaulted ceilings
- In-unit washer dryer
- Walk in closets

Cons: - For "newer apts", Berrytree had better appliances (stoves and fridge were old, no microwave)
- washer and dryer were old units from the days when they charged tenants in a "laundry room" so even though they;re in the apt, they still have the 4 quarter slot
thing, but it is free nevertheless.....but classless
- Not as "nice" as first expected....Berrytree is prolly nicer to live in.
- Cable/int not included (unless you do that deal...but only for first year)

And finally....The Club at Chandler Crossings. Wow. This is place is set up brilliantly. It is made for the college/grad student. If you're somewhat active, this is the place for you. Although a lil more expensive, they provide amazing services and amenities. They have 2bed/2ba , 3 bed/3 ba, 4 bed/4ba. Now you're prolly thinking, I don't have anyone to live with. Well, here's where the genius begins. When applying for a place, you fill out a profile of yourself eg. Scale of 1-10 on Study habits, Social habits, Cleanliness, and Personailty. On Aug 1st, they go through and group similar people together and fill up the apartments. Their official move in day is mid August. Now, moving into an apt with someone you dont know may seem shady for your credit (lets say if someone doesnt pay up or something). So they have an individual leasing system, where everyone pays their own portion of their rent individually. If someone doesn't pay up, they're out and you get more rooom for yourself. The buildings are setup to have card key access, so you enter the building with a card key, and enter your apt with a card key, but your own room is deadbolt locked with a key for yourself, so no other roomie has access. Each room has its own full bathroom (vanity sink, toilet and shower/bathtub), and a mirrored closet. The Club has a butt load of features. Heated indoor pool and spa with access and all day and night (11pm close i think). Very nice gym, similar to the Costa Verde gym, which is bad ass, locker rooms, 2 tanning beds, a golf simulator with clubs, an indoor tennis court, an indoor basketball court, a sand volleyball pit, huge lounge with a bigscreen tv, popcorn, and freshly baked cookies daily (great place to study). Its really a resort. Also, a 24-hour computer lab where you can print anything you want anytime of day....just need your own paper. If, at anytime you want to change apts cuz of roomies, you can be moved within a week without problems (according to a chick I spoke with about it). They also give you a year round bus pass (the city has a stop just for the apts) that runs to 2:30AM Thursday-Sunday and I think midnight every other day (may want to check this out). Now if all this was not enough. This is the deal breaker for me, and I think it will be quite useful for you since you're moving from Cali....the Apts are fully furnished. I'm talking nice leather couch with 2 chairs in the living room, TV stand, barstools for the kitchen counter, dining table with chairs, everything for the bedroom also. This includes a fullsize bed (jus a tad smaller than a queen), night stand, a chest that can be stored under the bed if you want more space, and a computer desk. All included in the rent. They have a new sale this week so I dont know the exact prices. But they are trying to get rid of the 4bed/4 bath Premium (1900 sqft), which is a huge apt with enough room for a fullsize pooltable in between the kitchen and the living room. For the 4/4 premium is $495/month per person, which includes cable and internet, but not gas and electric (40-60/month depending on time of year). I signed the lease this weekend, and I met some guy through the MSU Roommate finding thingy and he seems real chill, so we signed up together. The 2bd/2ba is actually more than the 4 bd I think its like 550-600 per person, so thats a grip. If you dont mind living with other guys/girls, this is definitely the sweetest deal of them all. Personally, I am kinda social, so I like living with more people (good dorm experiences in undergrad).

Pros: - Awesome Amenities (especially gym, pool, courts, comp lab)
- Fully furnshed
- By far the newest and nicest apts in East Lansing
- In-unit washer dryer
- Individual Lease structure
- Gated, so your **** is secure

Cons: - No 1bd/1ba
- Pretty expensive especially if you only want 1 roomie
- The farthest of the three from school (bout 3-4 miles)....still biking distance
- I think they inspect your apt 2 times a year to make sure you dont have a drug lab and the furniture hasn't been burned to a crisp (apparently its happened
before...hahaha)

Holla back with any questions and take it easy.....

Alvin

P.S. I dont want to sound chincy or anything but I flew out there from Cali to investigate...so if you guys could do me the favor of putting me down as "how you heard about us" I would appreciate it. I think I get like a $50 gift cert. THANKS!! 😀

Thanks a lot for this detailed info.

Broseph, you're on fire! First you post a kickass match list. Then you hit me with this delectable summary of possible living arrangements. ::air guitar solo!::

I'm definitely considering Chandler's Crossing. The website makes the place look amazing (http://www.chandlercrossings.com/). Did you check out "The Village" and "The Landings" at Chandler's Crossing too? You'll have to PM me your name so I can tell them you refered me.

Lastly, which bank are you going to be using?

I did not check them out....but the cool thing about being a part of any of these complexes is that you enjoy the amenities of all 3. My reasons for choosing The Club are that it is the newest of the three and the apts themselves have the most square footage. I have the dimensions of the apts for each of the three complexes if y'all need. For example, the 4bd/4ba at the club is 1887 sqft, while at the village it's like 1519. But I think the Club is the most expensive one too. Village offers 1-4bdrms, while the Club and Landings offer 2-4bdrms. Also, the club has a building just for grads students....so I'm thinking it appeals to the quieter, non-undergrad crowd.

For Banks, I think I am going with Citizens Bank, because it is EVERYWHERE, I believe they have free checking, and there's one right across from campus (on Grand River where the bars are at). So that is the trifecta for me. Some other choices are Comerica(if you have it, stick with it), Flagstar (sucks), La Salle, Summit(not free checking), and Fifth Third (free checking) Bank. I would go Citizens, Fifth Third, La Salle, Summit/Flagstar. I can't judge comerica...most are in Lansing, rather than East Lansing, but there is one in Okemos (relatively close to school) and one west of the school across the highway off of Mich Ave. Well that's that.

Did you guys get the email with all the M1 stuff? What do you guys think of the examination waivers for biochem and genetics?

The schedule says the summer semester ends 6/29 which doesn't give us much of a summer between M1 and M2.

Do you guys know if we get a parking pass to park on campus?

I think I need to take the classes, I've been outta school for a year and haven't taken biochem or genetics in 2-3 years, haha. Yeah, a 2 month summer seems quite short, but it's better than 3rd and and 4th year with no summer!

As for parking, you need to get a pass and I assume we pay for it with our tuition. (At least that is how it is done here in Diego).

I'm a first year at CHM, to be done in 3 days after I take my pharm final which I am procrastinating studying for...

Yes, classes until the end of June sucks. This summer semester has been dragging on, but it makes me feel a little better knowing that COM goes until the end of July!

I did not take the waiver exams b/c I figured I would have to study way more than what I wanted to before school even started. There may have been 1 or 2 who passed the biochem and I don't know if anyone passed the genetics. There could have been more who passed, but it's unlikely.

The parking pass for Aug-May costs about $330. That is an additional fee on top of tuition. You could park and not leave until 6pm, when the gates go up or pay per hour, which definitely adds up. During the summer semester there is free parking in lot 91, across from Service Road.

I live in Trappers Cove Apartments, which I'm happy with.

If anyone has questions, feel free to PM me....I probably won't be checking this forum much. If not, see you in August! :luck:

Hi All! Thought I'd stop by and see whats happening. I got in last year but deferred a year so I'm starting this August. Exciting... 😀 I'm staying at Twyickingham Apts. They are 2,3,4 bedroom apts but you can see the med school from the apt complex. Its pretty nice. Am I the first girl to post here!? Oh ya 😎

Welcome to the crew! So are you already in Lansing? I guess now that there are more than 3 people on the thread we can start a mini list.

Can you elaborate on that bolded statement (specifically what you meant by "you know where you're at")? And Welcome to the Class Thread!! I am guessing you didn't decide to post because you weren't sure you were going to MSU or not. How did you like MSU undergrad?

P.S. I am adding you to the list on the thread.

Go Spartans of '10!
Hehe- heres my info
Hershey1771- Hershey from NYC (University of Michigan Undergrad)

I think Mark just meant "know where your at" like "get your bearings" and such and such. But I heard the same about the book thing, cause either you can get them from upperclassmen or you don't need them at all. A friend of a friend of mine just copied all the pages from the library text. Interesting- but may be a lot of work/time. I did buy the USMLE I First Aid book though to study along with- recommended by anonymous forum-er
Did any of you apply for the NHSC scholarship?

Haha, I applied for it! I know two ladies at MSU-CHM, roommates actually, who both have the scholarship. Turns out MSU had the most total NHSC scholars of any school last year (1st-4th years summed). Bodes well for us....did you apply?

Ya, I did apply! When I interviewed, they said we might hear back as late as the last week of September, as to whether people got it or not...so we will see. Good luck to you! :luck: That's awsome about MSU having the most NHSC scholars!!

Has anyone thought about where they want to do 3rd and 4th year? I don't think we have to decide until the end of first year, but I was just wondering if anyone already has a preference.

Hello:

I hope my comment concerning not purchasing any books just yet didnt offend you.. Hershey was correct... in that you might just decide that the coursepack is sufficient.. sort of how I almost always attend class regardless if its helpful or not, while others just dont go... depends on your own choice. Anyway- I really enjoyed undergrad at state, it has something for everyone. I think you both will enjoy it here. The school is pretty laid-back and students are nice.

Just an update on my situ-
I just signed for a place at meridan, I think im really going to enjoy it there. Have any of you finalized your living arrangements? I thought the book that they had sent with the ceremony invitations was a nice touch and I am hoping I will actually read it before school starts..

Hope everyone had a great fourth!!

-M-

No way Mark! I was in no way offended. I was hoping you could elaborate on what the alternative was. My brain just couldn't process that one sentence. I signed my lease and the Club at Chandlers Crossing and I am excited! That place looks rad.

DWave - That's a good question. Anyone have opinions on the rotation site options. What are the cities like ( Flint vs. Grand Rapids), hospitals, and which ones have subsidized housing.

I'm excited as hell and ready to go....I'm just trying to enjoy the last bits of true freedom that we may ever have! What have you guys been up to on the days leading up to school?

I've been packing and feeling sad about leaving New York. But I am so excited to have a carpeted apartment in East Lansing...ahh...carrrpettt. 😀

haha Congrats on your comeuppance!! Yeah, I'm definitely not the most enthused person to be leaving San Diego, but I think it'll be an great growing experience to live somewhere else for an extended period of time. What are you doing about transportation. Are you buying cars, bringing them over....etc?

Not sure yet on mobility...may have to buy a used car or just bus it 🙄

I flew in at 3:30PM and am crashing at my cousin's crib (Madison Heights) until Friday (move-in day for my apt). I will be in East Lansing tomorrow opening a bank acct and trying to get a mich drivers license, if possible. Other than that I will officially be in there Friday as well. Anyone up for drinks on Friday night? I am excited to see all y'all!
