When is the earliest time to be able to send off your app for ophtho residency? Thanx

Also one other quick question... is NOT doing an away rotation looked down upon? I attend a top 10 school, did one year of research there, and am doing a neuro ophtho rotation there. Basically... I want to get some exposure to some other stuff with my last few rotations in medschool

Thanx in advance

You will be finding out that the rate limiting step for submission is when your uber-busy attendings finish writing those glowing recs for ya...

I was in a unique situation in that I already had all my letters written by May... so I submitted my CAS on June 29 last year... waaaaaaaay early, so it sat around at CAS untouched until Aug 1...
Key date tho, was that it was processed in Batch 1 and sent out to programs on Friday August 26... Some peeps I knew who submitted the second week of August were in batch 2... so I'd think first two week of August gets you in the earliest processing batch.

Good luck.

To answer your first question, the earliest to send in your application is probably late July or early August but SF Match does not designate a date on which application submission may begin as ERAS does. They do however recommend a target date (usually end of August or early September). Definitely have your application in by the target date and you should not be behind the eight ball. I had submitted my application one week before the target deadline and I was in batch 5 (two years ago)...i had no regrets.

Question two: Not doing an away rotation is NOT looked down upon. Whatever choices you make, someone on the interview trail may ask why you chose to do what you did; just be thoughtful and honest. I did no away rotations and did not feel as though it hurt me in the end. Two good reasons to do aways include: 1. knowing you want to be at one particular program or in a particular part of the country (i.e. wanting a california residency and coming from the east coast), and 2. desire to obtain a letter if coming from a not so strong ophtho department. Interviews for the most part are granted based on grades, step 1 scores, publications, letters of recommendation, and unique characteristics since every program has its own personality. Good luck.
