The question is why do YOU think there is this trend? As I said, most dentists I've encountered replied with something related to podiatry as one of their initial responses. Why is that? What do teeth have to do with feet? If they liked both, why did they not go to medical school? And as predent/dent students, do you see this trend in our generation?

Because they are Pre-meds with 3.2 GPA's/ 24 MCAT and do not have a shot in hell at med school. As a back up plan most look at Podiatry first then dental.

Hahaha. So, so true. Poor us, stuck with the lesser of body parts. I wish I were smart enough to get into medical school. Unfortunately, this was my last resort. 🙄 Oh well.

I can't say that any of my classmates have ever considered podiatry. Some of my classmates chose dental school over medical school, after having been accepted to both. One of my classmates even went to medical school, but came to dental school instead of doing a general surgery residency. I could have easily attended my state's medical school but opted for dentistry instead.
Besides the fact that I actually enjoy dentistry, ( I enjoy medicine as well), lifestyle considerations played a huge role. i.e. no mandated residencies after graduation, regular office hours, lower malpractice ins rates, nice standard of living, and less late night emergency calls. I belive that podiatry offers similar lifestyle benefits, but I am not sure since I never looked into podiatry. The only similarity that between feet and mouths that I can think of, is that they can both stink!

Podiatry?? Hmmm . . . that's really, really odd. I have no idea how that and dentistry are similar, but whatever floats your boat.
For me personally, it came down to dentistry and proctology. I really couldn't decide between the two, so I found an obscure internet message board and let the people there decide for me in a poll.
