Ok, I read a post that was about how representative allo forum was and wanted to help to clarify that!

Please go ahead and vote and keep this thread up so that we can hit like 1000 votes or something!

Some definitions for this thread as requested by some of members:

First time applicant: who is a junior and applying for the first time or a senior and graduated/will graduate and is applying for the first time!

Re-applicant: a person who graduated last year, applied but got rejected last year and is re-applying this year!

Non-trad: some one who left college more than 2 years ago and is a first time applicant or who got rejected more than 2 years ago and is re-applying 2 or more years from their rejection!

College/University Student: Vote in this section even if you will apply next year instead of 2-3 years!

.

Nontrads can be first time applicants or reapplicants.

How far out of college do you have to be in order to be considered a non-traditional?

Non-trad first time applicant. CONFOUND! CONFOUND!

Exactly! Nontrad (well sort of - does 2005 graduate and straight into post-bac count?) and a first time applicant. What's up with these young whipper snappers today? Didn't you also have to take a social science research methodology type class as part of your college curriculum? It's like the 5-10, 10-15, 15-20 surveys we see all of the time. Unique parameters for each category kiddos, unique and discrete! 😉

come on guys, its not that we are preparing a publishing research article!!!

If you applied and got rejected last year and are re-applting then you are reapplicant and if you left college like 3-4 years a go then you are non-trad, come sense ha!!! 😉

If you are applied and rejected last year and are re-applting then you are reapplicant and go for that if you left college like 3-4 years a go then you are non-trad, come sense ha!!! 😉

Um, but I'm applying for the first time AND I'm sort of a non-trad since I graduated college, um 18 months ago (so not two+ years ago either).

It's the same thing as having an MCAT poll like the following:
25-30
30-35
35-43
So, if I got a 31 I'm obviously in the 30-35 category. However, what if I got a 35? Do I put myself in the 30-35 category, or the 35-43 category? The categories can't have overlap unless you allow people to click more than one box and track how many multiple box clicks there are.
A better poll would be:
First time, undergrad
First time, nontrad
Reapplicant, undergrad
Reapplicant, nontrad
Et cetera, et cetera.

I'm not trying to be a pain. This is just a useful skill that I think is lacking for a lot of people that's really easy to correct once you think about it.

Um, but I'm applying for the first time AND I'm a non-trad. So, in this option exclusive poll, do I vote as a first time applicant or a non-traditional?

A better poll would be:
First time, undergrad
First time, nontrad
Reapplicant, undergrad
Reapplicant, nontrad
Et cetera, et cetera.

Read my first post again, I added some definitions! 👍

it seems it solved some confusion!

That describes me, too. But I don't think "undergrad" and "non-trad" are exhaustive. My premed advisor (who is a former adcom) only considered people entering >=3 years after undergrad (i.e. applying >=2 years after graduation) nontrads. By that standard '05 graduates applying now aren't nontrads, but nor are we undergrads.

Read my first post again, I added some definitions! 👍

i reject your definitions...as a non-trad first time applicant currently in med school, i place myself in the first time applicant currently in med school category...i will not be pigeon-holed by your caste system :meanie:

You are free my friend!!! 😉

Far:
Function: adverb
1 : at or to a considerable distance in space <wandered far from home>
2 a : to a great extent : MUCH <far better methods> b : by a broad interval : WIDELY <the far distant future>
3 : to or at a definite distance, point, or degree <as far as I know>
4 : to an advanced point or extent <a bright student will go far> <worked far into the night>

5 : at a considerable distance in time <not far from the year 1870>
- how far : to what extent, degree, or distance <didn't know how far to trust them>

For the record, you don't have a category for people like me, who are in undergrad and will be applying the next application cycle. 2 years from now is not the next application cycle. Just saying.

with so many flaws associated with this poll, i'm surprised to see that quite a few people voted. I voted, but that's because I'm a sucker for polls.

well you can be considered in the 2-3 years section! Who cares man, you guys are making this a big deal!

I swear I will not give the data to US NEWS for publication without giving credit to all of you guys!

I knew what you meant. I still stand by my answer. 🙂

Fair enough.. 👍 I've been cranky lately, my apologies.
In that case, I would consider myself very much a nontrad.

Its cool my friend, we all understand the process is really pain in the ass!

Dang it! The choices on the poll were confusing, I picked first time applicant instead of non-trad because I didn't realize that your non-trd option was meant to also imply first time applicant. So what if you are a non-trad re-applicant? ugh. So my vote is screwed up. Ah well.

awesome, im the only high school student wandering aimlessly through SDN.

.

yikes. categories aren't mutually exclusive.
or exhaustively inclusive.

nontrad reapplying before the 2-year designation.

oh come on! ...

Hooray! Another high school student! Wherefore art thou, other high school student?

Do we have to be excited about our status? I mean, all I'm saying is that not everyone expresses their current status followed by an exclamation mark. 😉

lets get the final votes for the the Fall-2007 admission class!
