2007-2008 federal rates announced

They announced the new Stafford interest rates for variable student loans today.

6.619% in school
7.219% in repayment

Pretty much what we expected.

Aren't these fixed rates? Can someone explain that for me? Thanks!

Only Stafford loans taken out after 7/1/06 are fixed, these rates are for the Stafford loans you had prior to then that are variable. Most students have both, fixed and variable loans. Basically it means if you are graduating this year you have until 6/30/07 to get a consolidation application in before your interest rates increase.
