Dudes,

I have researched all the dental schools listed in ada.org and gave my best to pool useful information (at least for me). So, I thought of sharing this with you to save some time while looking for universities that offer Advanced Standing Program for international dentists.

While, I spent maximum time on looking up individual school websites, there might be some information that I have missed or you might have some information that I haven't listed here. Please help us collaborate this work for the good of everyone. Feel free to comment on this or give your suggestions or information that might need some editing or additions. I would be more than pleased to change it for you.

Also, I looking for someone to help me in figuring out stuff that I couldn't pool. Most importantly, 'Does universities accept provisional certificate at the time of application deadlines as valid proof?' Probably, we could send email or contact the admissions office. Is there anyone ready to volunteer and find this information for us, especially someone who is already in USA?

The attached zip file contains list of all schools from ADA. You may filter out the results to fit your needs. The file contains the following details
  1. University Name
  2. City, State
  3. University Website
  4. Phone Number
  5. Advanced Standing Program Offered (Y/N)
  6. Green Card or Citizenship Required (R/NR)
  7. Application Fee
  8. Application Start and deadline dates
  9. Admission dates
  10. Number of Seats available
  11. Minimum TOEFL,
  12. Minimum NBDE I/II marks
  13. Minimum GPA
  14. Req. Number Recommendation Letters
  15. Sort of education Evaluation
  16. Statement of Purpose
  17. Resume
  18. Personal Interview
  19. Bulletin Link
  20. Source Link from which Information pulled
  21. My Notes
Hope it helps someone. Thanks

This is insane !
Excellent job !

I did not go through the whole list, but I just noticed that you have UMDNJ (New Jersey) as not having an advanced standing program.
They just opened one this year.

If I notice anything else, I'll update your spread sheet, and post it back here or PM it to you.

Outstanding job ! I really like it when people "GET" what this forum is all about. Pooling of information, not showing off scores, GPA's or whatever.
This is one of the great resources I have yet to see on here.
Keep it up !

hey... you've done a super job collecting information... probably would've taken u a pretty long time to get it together... great stuff! thanks

about the original degree certificate, i wrote to every school when i was doing my research... some of them were pretty nice actually... responded quite fast

well NYU and UMN both said they need the original degree

UCSF said
You don’t need to have the ORIGINAL DEGREE CERTIFICATE to apply, but you do need to have a NOTARIZED COPY of your Diploma saying that “THE DEGREE OF D.D.S. HAS BEEN CONFERRED ON … instead of ‘PROVISIONAL DEGREE/CERTIFICATE”.

i dont know what they mean by that.

Thanks for the update. It's interesting to see such contrasting information on two different web pages of same website. I shall try to contact UMDNJ about the admissions procedure and figure out if GC/Citizenship is still required.

That's very useful information Niti12. Let us know more about your research. My idea is collective information is more powerful than time consuming individual gathering of info. Hoping that I have invested approx 15hr time just on this.

Don't give a damn about NYU, as its 3 year. With UCSF, not good at english vocabulary, but they intend to say something like 'provide notarized copy stating - Provisional Certificate is being provided as a substitute for Degree Certificate'. Anyone can correct me if I am wrong.

What was the issue? Download the zip file and unzip. Check with the two worksheets in the unzipped excel file.

thanx man... I will check the list and post my reply later

Thanks write2dentist!!!

You've done a great job!, BTW, could we add a column listing the approximate cost of the programs for each school (if applicable)?

Thanks again

I found this for Nova South Eastern ,FL internation program...its a 3 yr program they say with some execptions being made for exemption from pre-clinical courses

Sounds like a good idea. But what I have seen so far is like there are various fees applicable. Some charge different fees for each year of you study. Some have in-state and out of state (most of us belong to this category). So, unlike min NBDE score, its not a straight forward value. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks for the update. I shall try to list it in my next version.

However, I have come across couple of universities, which do NOT have advanced standing program but accept into 3rd year provided we have 2 year course study from accredited university.

I have some interesting point (highlighted in bold) regarding email I got from Diane Travis, from 'Creighton University'.

The Advanced Standing program requirements are that you have a dental degree in a foreign country, have passed National Boards Part I and scored at least 213 on TOEFL.

We also have an additional requirement and you CANNOT apply unless you meet this requirement. The applicant must have proof of a specialty degree or a certification of a specialty from a program in the United States. This is a very important requirement. An example of what we are looking for would be a Masters Degree in Endodontics or some other dental-related field. It MUST have been received from an accredited university here in the United States.

Our program still is, as it has always been, a space-available program. There is no guarantee that any advanced standing application will be accepted in any given year. It is a 2-year program that will allow the applicant to receive a DDS degree. The deadline to apply for this program is March 1 of any given year for the class that will start in August of that same year.

If you meet all of the above requirements, including the 2-year program here in the United States; you may contact me for an application.

If you closely note the bold text, from Diane's response. We need Specialty program (MDS, correct me if I am wrong), in order to get admission into 3rd year of DDS program. Can any one explain if my interpretation is correct? If yes, why in the hell one wants to DDS, if he already has MDS, accredited by ADA?

Hi i did not find any of the zip file for US university list. Can you send it to me.
tnx.

hi there //
i din check teh forums and was doing my background on my own
i thanks to doc_amu u pointed this link to me ......
ok i had emailed and got a similar response ,
what is meant was .. u will hav to have a ada accredited masters/specialist degree from USA... any other country will not do

why does one recquire dds after doing masters .. well thats for registration .. coz a very few states would allow u to practise dentistry with only a master specialist degree without a DDS and ur practise would be restricted to teh field in which u have specialised ... hence if u want to practise outside these few states .. u would not be recognised ....
i have to add though that my knowledge in this field is still in infacy .. so i apologise in advance if i have made any mistake ..a d do stand to be corrected !
write2dentist .. i hope this helps ur dilema ,... as u have been so generous as to share all ur hard worked turmoil with of us .
kind regards

Thanks docpheonix. That cleared some doubts regarding want to DDS after MDS. But your text raised one more question.

What sort of MDS Speciality program accepts without DDS from ADA accredited university? I mean are there any universities that accepts Indian Dentists into Specialty program without DDS from US?

actually.. thats a good question write2dentist...
i was told that u CANNOT work on a patient if havent done dds... so.. how does that work?
what if you've done your masters first? it doesnt make sense!

Awesome job! Rarely does the international forum get dedicated "forumites".
Here are some hints:
1. Most schools always respond to emails. Try emailing before calling them.
2. Do not call them to find about the status of your applcation more than once. I have first hand information that they are not pleased to receive multiple phone calls. Once you have submitted your application they know what to do. It is almost like reminding them - "Do your job" - which is not very polite.
3. Personal statement - Do not , simply do not copy or modify someone's personal statement. They can read through it. They want to know something about you so talk about yourself. It takes a long time to make your personal statement do be the way you want. It took me two years. So start now.
4. Don't be gung-ho on scores. There is more to your application than scores. If that's the only thing you can work on at this moment, definitely work on it. But say you have an 88 or 89 and want it above 90, if there is something else you are doing like a master's program or an internship or externships or teaching or something more special than just volunteering at a dental clinic, try to excel in that.
5. CV - Do not write your CV in different fonts and sizes just so you can fill up space, they can see through that too.
6. GPA - Yes 3.0 and above would be nice but they know where you come from, why your GPA is low. If you think you have a valid reason why your GPA is low, mention that in your personal statement. If you are out of school, you can work on your CV and part 1 scores to tell them that you are more than those GPA numbers. They know grade inflation is common in the US :). It is not so in other countries.

Most of all be honest. As long as you know the words "I don't know" and make an effort to learn, you should be fine. I will update you more as I get more information.

Shoot any question on this thread and I will be glad to respond. My responses may not be very frequent, but I will respond.

Good Luck and great job again!

personal statement !! how does one make one !

i think its a great iformation to all of us who are persuing for nbde..
and we can also add 1 more column stating if PART 1 OR PARRT 2 IS REQUIRED IN FOLLOWING UNIVERSITY OR NOT?...think this can help a lot more....

Hi guys.

Well, just a word of wisdom, Creighton does really not have a foreign trained dentist (IDS/IDP/PASS) program. I do not care what they call it.
If you have already completed an ADA accredited specialty program, virtually any dental school in this country would consider you for admissions (immigration status aside).
And after all that trouble, they say it is still a "space based" program. Which means you could do your part, and when it comes to them, they can always deny you admissions if they do not have any open spots in that specific class.
Quite frankly, I am sure they have a good program, but not anything other schools would not be able to offer. If I were you, I would just cross them off my list, and focus my attention on more "appreciative" programs.

As far as the whole MDS issue, the answer is no. Not a masters degree from your home country. It does not even have to be a masters degree.
If you read it closely it says "
specialty degree or a certification" ... "It MUST have been received from an accredited university here in the United States".
The key words here are "specialty" and "accredited University".
Further more, there are only 9 fields of study recognized by the ADA as dental specialties which are as follows:

Endo
Ortho
Perio
Prostho
Pedo
Public Health
OM Surgery
OM Radiology

OM Pathology

Good Luck.

That varies from specialty to specialty and even from program to program.
Generally, you have a better shot at less competitive specialties such as Perio, Prostho, Pathology and Radiology.
Your application, however, still has to be somewhat competitive. Good GPA, boards and maybe some experience here in the US under your belt. But it is definitely do-able.

I have had a couple PMs. The questions were:

1. Where do I look for externships?

Look at your state school's website. Say if you reside in LA, look at UCLA and USC's websites and contact the interested programs. There was a friend of mine who did her externship in oral surgery.

2. Where do I look for volunteer work?

Look at any free dental clinics in your state. I know they would love to have volunteers.

P.S - How are things going at Pacific Sherif?

You must make a distinction between DDS, Masters (accredited or not accredited) and dental licensure.
I think this is what is confusing you.

In order for you to be able to practice dentistry in the US you must have a valid/active dental license.
Now having said that, there are several pathways to dental licensure.

One of them is by successful completion an accredited dental program here in the US, hence earning a DDS or DMD (which again, still does not qualify you to practice ANYTHING, ANYWHERE. On the other hand, they qualify you to sit for the license exam, which THEN allows you to practice dentistry).

The second is following successful completion of an accredited specialty program here in the US (it does not make any difference if it is a masters or certificate).

The third option which probably interests none of us yet, is licensure by reciprocation and/or credentials. This means that after you have practiced here in the US for a certain amount of years and/or have completed enough CE credits, other state dental boards may be willing to grant you a dental license in their jurisdiction based on your qualifications.

And then of course you have all the teaching licenses/permits and the rest.

For now, just focus on # 1 and # 2.

Sherif

P.S - How are things going at Pacific Sherif?

What's up G ? :)

Pacific is great. We're on summer break for now.
TOO BAD YOU WENT TO MINNESOTA ! You could have been here in San Fran @ Pacific !!! :p Just kidding of course ...
You would have fit right in.

How is UMN ? I know for a fact that school is great ! We just do not know much about it as FTD's since their IDS program is fairly new ... so i'll give you the honors, go ahead ... brag your heart out !!!!

Sherif

Oh Sherif, aren't you the best?
Well UMN is awesome so far.

Facilities - top notch. They have remodelled the pre-clinic floor with state of the art equipment. We didn't get to use it this year, but I think there will be a facility for the PASS students from next year. I will get back to you on that. We have some pretty cool stuff in the pre-clinics. We had 3M ESPE'S jazzy stuff (as one of my prof's would put it :) ) to learn how to play with implants from start to finish.

Clinic - I have not been in clinic so far. But from what I hear, you will be loaded with patients. Even if your patient cancels, most of the time they will find you one other patient. There is never a point where you have to wait for a chair - not even two minutes! Just so many chairs. I also heard about the international program - where you get to go to a foreign country and intern there for a few weeks. Isn't that cool?

Faculty - What can I say? The ones we have so far are great. They are amazing. They are ver knowledgeable and helpful. They treat us like residents. They are simply great. I have learned a lot.

Fellow D3'S - They are very warm and nice! Extremely friendly and helpful. This being a new program and a new concept, I think they have been great! This summer session, we have a slightly different schedule, so we don't get to mingle with them a whole lot. But whoever we have talked to / bonded with so far are great!
Licensing exams - We do host ADLEX. That helps us in getting licensed in about 40 of the 50 states in the US. We don't need to wait those three months after graduation before getting a job.
I don't know what else to say! I have been here just a couple months. This being a new program, I thought I would see a lot of hurdles. But it has been very laid-back and very smooth. Of course, one has to expect long days during the summer session - almost 12 hour days - to complete all the preclinical in three months. Starting fall we will be D3 golden gophers just like the regular students. The only thing I am apprehensive about is the winter. I will update you on that when winter says hello.
Oh yes, I have to let you know - we have had lots of free lunches :D:D:D!! Isn't that the chocolate icing on top of the chocolate cake? Now it is your turn Sherif :D!

Dudes,

I have researched all the dental schools listed in ada.org and gave my best to pool useful information (at least for me). So, I thought of sharing this with you to save some time while looking for universities that offer Advanced Standing Program for international dentists.

While, I spent maximum time on looking up individual school websites, there might be some information that I have missed or you might have some information that I haven't listed here. Please help us collaborate this work for the good of everyone. Feel free to comment on this or give your suggestions or information that might need some editing or additions. I would be more than pleased to change it for you.

Also, I looking for someone to help me in figuring out stuff that I couldn't pool. Most importantly, 'Does universities accept provisional certificate at the time of application deadlines as valid proof?' Probably, we could send email or contact the admissions office. Is there anyone ready to volunteer and find this information for us, especially someone who is already in USA?

The attached zip file contains list of all schools from ADA. You may filter out the results to fit your needs. The file contains the following details
  1. University Name
  2. City, State
  3. University Website
  4. Phone Number
  5. Advanced Standing Program Offered (Y/N)
  6. Green Card or Citizenship Required (R/NR)
  7. Application Fee
  8. Application Start and deadline dates
  9. Admission dates
  10. Number of Seats available
  11. Minimum TOEFL,
  12. Minimum NBDE I/II marks
  13. Minimum GPA
  14. Req. Number Recommendation Letters
  15. Sort of education Evaluation
  16. Statement of Purpose
  17. Resume
  18. Personal Interview
  19. Bulletin Link
  20. Source Link from which Information pulled
  21. My Notes
Hope it helps someone. Thanks
i have been always looking for such information but unfortunately the file doesnt open for me...can you help me?thanx

The tuition + living expenses at UMN is around 90,000 dollars per year.

So all together it costs around 180K, right?

Can you give some detail, like how much is the tuition itself, the living expenses, etc.?

And as usual, another great post of G3K... I was going to contact you asking about ADLEX and equipements of UMN.. but thank you , all answered....oohh ..you forgot to say few words about Dr. Berthold ;):D

Sorry guys .. i was away for couple of days. I shall respond to you all with more updates soon.

i think its a great iformation to all of us who are persuing for nbde..
and we can also add 1 more column stating if PART 1 OR PARRT 2 IS REQUIRED IN FOLLOWING UNIVERSITY OR NOT?...think this can help a lot more....

It's already in there. If Part 2 is empty then it's not required. Else it is required. If min score required is mentioned then its listed there. Hope it helps.

Good Luck.

Thanks dude. It makes no sense to seek two year degree from accredited university just to get into Creighton univ. for another two year course to get the licensure (after 5 year dental course work from my country). I have it stricked off my personal list.

That's good info Sherif. Thank you. I read about the #3 from ada.org. I think it might be risky depending upon the new state where one might want to practice. If that new state mandates a DDS then one has to redo #1. So, it was out of my options on the day I read it.

#2 was new to me. I need to explore a bit more on it. Thanks for the headsup

Sherif
