Hi Everyone!

I am attending Penn in the fall and they give us 4 stethoscopes to choose from...Littmann's Master Cardiology, Cardiology III, Master Classic II, and the Classic II S.E. I was wondering if anyone has heard good or bad things about any of them or if anyone would have a recommendation!

Thanks!

Hi there:
Personally I am most partial to the Cardiology III. It's a good stethoscope and should serve you well. The master cardiology stethoscope is also a great stethoscope but it really isn't needed unless you are going to specialize in cardiology. The master classic II is poorer quality than the Cardiology III but many students decide to buy a cheaper stethoscope to use and then when they get out they go buy a more expensive one. If you have the money go with the Cardiology III. Most veterinarians are now using them in practice and they last a long time.

You really need to try them. Stethoscope preference is personal and some people don't necessarily like the more expensive choice.

I have the Classic II S.E. and it served me well this year. I think it depends on what your plans are. The Classic II S.E. is great for large animal work because it's not very expensive, but serves quite well in that function. If you're thinking of going into small animal, maybe go with the cardiology III. My friend has one and loves it. I think they serve better with the subtleties of small animal auscultation. That's just my side of things though.

Is it common for schools to give a list of stethoscopes to choose from? I received the Littmann 4100WS as a gift and am now in a panic that I wont be able to use it! Thanks for any feedback! :scared:

of course they'll let you use it!!! they probably just recommend scopes that kids have liked/preferred in the past...but as long as you have a working scope, they're going to let you use it....no one would make you go out and buy another one!

That's probably just the ones they choose to stock at the bookstore. If you want to buy all your stuff from them, those are your choices - though they might negotiate a student discount (that may or may not be better than low-price outlets like allheart or whatever). But I'm guessing that you'd have the option to say "no, thanks, I've already got one."

That said, aside from the required-to-buy-from-school lab coat and computer, Davis has remained completely silent as far as required/recommended books and supplies. I kinda wish they'd give us a list already, but I guess it's to their advantage to keep quiet long enough that I end up with no choice but to buy everything from the bookstore rather than price-shopping online. 🙄

Whew, I can breathe again... Thanks all! At CSU they kept telling us they were going to post the list of books/ supplies and then finally posted on 6-5 and told us that if we want to discounted price we have to have our orders in by 6-30. At least we don't have to pay for them until Aug. 🙄

Hey Kate-
Actually the bookstore at Davis will match prices that you find online, they really want you to buy from them so they will match prices of books and things like stethescopes. So actually I got my stethoscope for the price I found on Allheart.com. It is a pretty good system and works out fairly well- so that makes buying things a lot easier. Plus, there aren't that many books to purchase, I bought much fewer books this year than I ever really did in undergrad.
Looking forward to seeing you next year.

Well... Thanks for ruining my whole temper tantrum. 😡

😀

Matching prices is cool. Davis (the university as a whole) seems to have a lot of pragmatic policies like that. (...Though if I was going to insist on continuing to feel annoyed about something, I'd say that not getting "the list" until just before we start means I won't have time to compare prices online so I won't be able to argue for a price match anyway...)

i use the classic II s.e. and i really like it. but then again, i don't have the $100+ for the cardio III. all the vets i work with use the cardio III and really like it. but i agree with those who have said to try different ones out, because each scope varies from person to person! 😀
