So I actually finished my DAT on the 16th, but immediately after I had to catch a plane to Hawaii for a family vacation. I just got back, so some of the details of the test are a little rusty.

Problems during the exam: So everything was going smoothly during the science section, until I hit the 2nd to last question or so on the gchem section. I don't know exactly what was going on, but it was a question about radioactive decay I believe, but the equation was not displaying properly. The numbers and elements were distorted so that I could net tell which elements and which isotopes were being created or emitted. For example, it would display hydrogen as H 7 3 2 and nitrogen as 1 4 4 1 N. I was really confused as to what was happening, and started panicking, so spent at least 6 minutes trying to figure out how to solve the problem. I know, I know, that was dumb, but when you get panicked you do really stupid things. This left me a LOT less time to do the ochem section, so I had to really rush the ochem and guess on a few questions that I know I could've gotten. I was really bummed out and upset that the gchem section affected by ochem section. I called the ADA right after, and as expected, they offered me a retake of the exam, but I would have to automatically void my 1st exam score. I am considering it, but am still not sure if I should retake. I know that normally, I should score a 25 or so on the ochem section.

Bio: I know you guys read this a lot, so I'm not going to overdo it, but DAT Destroyer was so spot on with this it wasn't funny. Out of the 40 questions on my exam, I will swear to you that at least 16 were from the Destroyer word by word, it was creepy. The other questions were definitely more application based questions where you don't simply recall facts, but have to understand the concepts. I also used Achiever (way too detailed) and Topscore (again, way too detailed). I cannot emphasize enough how Destroyer really nails a lot of the questions. I was scoring around 18 or so on both Topscore and Achiever.

Ochem: I thought this section was pretty similar to Topscore and Achiever. Maybe slightly easier. It was really straightforward, and I just wish I had a few more minutes to finish this section. I was scoring around low to mid 20's on topscore, and 18's on Achiever.

Gchem: As expected, this section was a lot more conceptual than the practice tests that I took. This is not to say, however, that there were no calculations. As noted above, like the radioactive decay problem, there are some calculations you need to do, but they seemed simple enough. I was scoring about 20 or so on all of my practice tests.

PAT: I'm a little dissappointed with this score, because I know I could've done better. I just got caught up on one of the pattern folding questions at the end, and left no time for my cube counting questions (I do cube counting last). It was really depressing because right as I was about to enter the last answer for the last cube count, my time ran out. Anyways, the PAT here is much easier than the Achiever, probably similar difficulty to topscore. For the PAT, I mainly used Crack the DAT, and man, it really is helpful, especially for the hole punches, TFE, and angles. They're really hard on Crack the DAT, but make the real PAT seem like a joke. I was scoring around 23 or so on Crack the DAT and 25 on Topscore. Achiever, I was getting like 18 or so. I highly recommend Crack the DAT if you're weak on TFE, hold punching, or angles. The angles weren't that bad at all on the real PAT compared to Crack the DAT.

RC: As said by many others, the questions definitely had more inference/tone related questions than the practice test I took. This isn't to say, however, that the reading the passage for the answer technique is bad. I think it'll still work well. But again, I started freaking out, and fell behind the clock, and left 4 answers blank at the end! That was really bad, I totally was convincing myself that I could guess the last 4 questions in 15 seconds, but before I knew it, the time was up. Man, I really wish I answered them. Passage length was identical to Achiever, Topscore, Kaplan. I was getting around 22-23 on Achiever and 25-29 on Topscore.

QR: I didn't really study much for this section. I just looked over some of the DAT destroyer problems, and then made sure to do all of the Achiever and Topscore problems. I thought the real QR was really similar to all of the questions I was presented with on my practice tests. Time was about the same I thought with the practice tests, and my scores reflected that. I was averaging about a 22 or slightly lower on the practice tests.

I'm glad the test is over, and now I'm frantically working on my application so that I can get it out in about the next 6 days. In the meantime though, what do you guys think about me retaking the exam? I know for sure that I can do much better on the ochem section. My overall GPA is around a 3.74 and my science is ~3.55 or so. Anyways, good luck to you all, and feel free to ask any questions.

hi congrats on those amazing scores!! you should have no problems. One quick question. The QR section of the DATs you said was comparable to the practice tests? Which practice tests are you talking about (DESTROYER, ACHIEVER, TOPSCORE, or KAPLAN)?? Please let us know. Gud luck with the rest of the process!!!

the exact same thing happened to me!! and i think it was the same question!! I think there was another issue i had, but forgot what was it now, it's been a few months since i took the exam.
i didn't call ADA though...i felt fortunate of getting my score (which is quite similar to yours).
If you retake the exam, i assume they will let u retake any time u want (with out waiting for 3 months)
wouldn't you have a high possibility of getting the same exam?

THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME!! I was soo pissed, coz I had no IDEA wat it was saying. And I was trying to make some sense of it, But it wasnt working. And one question could be a factor or 2 or 3 points.

I really think they should fix that one question. Coz 3 ppl so far have gotten it, and messed us up.

Count me in too.. I had the same question. Ended up with a 24 in GCHem. 1 question sure does mean a lot!!! 😎

I was happy with my scores, but the fact of the matter does not change. Props for contacting the ada, however.

Personally, I don't believe you should retake. You did very well and a nice GPA - you aren't on the edge.

Congrats.

Most people will probably disagree with me, because your scores are very, very solid.

But if I were in your shoes, I may consider retaking, knowing that I could improve Ochem substantially.

Also, it seems like on a couple of the sections you let your nerves get rattled and lost track of time.

The second time around, you may be a little less prone to getting stuck on one problem. It appears that you know the material really well.

But if you really think you could do alot better on ochem, AND if you think you could pull up RC and PAT (managing clock better), then you may want to retake.

Sounds like you got bio down pretty well, though, it may go down a little bit, cause when you're that high, only a question or two can be a big difference.

Just my thoughts. Either way you're solid. Get your app in!

I walked into the exam expecting 25+ in ochem as well, but a few reagents showed up that I had no idea what they did with the reactants given. Could that happen next time as well? Probably. I think your scores are solid. I personally would not take it again.

Yes! That radioactive decay question was soooo utterly confusing! I couldn't tell which numbers were which. What's so frustrating is that I usually rock with radioactive decay questions. But this one just confused the **** out of me. Of all the questions on my test, that is the one that sticks with me the most. What the heck was that? What happened to super- and subscripts?!

I also got that nuclear decay question.
did anyone make a complaint to ADSAAS?
at the end of the exam I put in a request to look over that question to ADSAAS and the proctor at the testing site.
anyone hear anything from ADSAAS?

woa! very weird but I had the same exact question. I thought I just didnt understand some piece of information they were giving us in the question and didnt really think anything about it until now, but I for sure wasted some time on that question which hurt my orgo as well....
We should get some answers from the ADA about this question!!

Seriously my fellow SDN'ers WE MUST UNITE against all of this academic tyranny. Guys, look at the Qr for instance and the nightmares of people in general getting raped on it. We need every point we can get, especially in the natural science section. I still can't believe looking at the Barron's conversion scale, that 1 wrong in gen chem drops you down to about a 25. I don't know about you guys, but for someone who is working on getting out of the "Bermuda Triangle" that is the scores of 14 & 15 in qr, in addition to many other poor souls here, it is imperative we pursue and get some justice over this question. The "new DAT" is mind-boggling enough, we can do without the errors, don't you guys agree? Re-taking an exam might help you raise the gen chem score, since you most likely won't have that question again, but at the same time, you can drop & that will hurt you, so again, we must take action against this, its for the benefit of us all. Happy study night

- Flirteve

Hey...Congrats on those scores...One question though, that problem with the radioctive decay that so many of you guys were having, is it just in one test center or is it all over the place???Did you all take it in one place? just curious...

I don't think u should retake ur exam u have done pretty well. So good luck to u in Dental school,

I am definitely going to read the Destroyer at least 3 times. ur bio score is amazing.

Hey guys, so it seems like a ton of us have gotten that messed up gchem question. Imagine, if just us SDNers have already gotten that problem, imagine what the rest of the pre-dental population has gotten or will get that problem. This sounds like a serious issue that I think the ADA really needs to understand. I spoke to Kathy Hinshaw, but she didn't really seem to think it was a huge deal, and treated it more as a standard complaint call. Maybe if enough of us contact her with the same problem, they will look into it more and perhaps give us a better option rather than having to retake the exam. That just doesn't sound right to me, especially when ONE gchem problem can cost you a significant grade drop. If this is going to work though, we have to work as a team and get a united complaint against the ADA so that our voices can be taken seriously. Anybody in on this?

Most definitely. We all must unite against this madness, I mean as students and fellow-test-takers we abide by the rules and do what's right, the least we can get in return is a fair exam. Heck, with the 10,000 word problems that is the Qr section, we can't afford to lose easy points. This makes me sick, guys, we have to fight this, good luck with studies.

I got the same question. No superscripts or subscripts, didn't know what the hell to do

In regards to the all the people having received the same messed up question, can you post the dates that you took your DAT so that we can see whether or not the test was relatively close to each other or even on the same day at the same time.

So I had that exact same problem (with the radioactive decay question) on my test today. I told the lady at the front desk during my break and she basically shrugged it off and said "I'm sure you'll do fine honey." I also wrote a note on the survey you do at the end of the exam about how wrong it was to present a question in improper format. And then I went home and called ADA, got transferred around and was told to "send a letter for consideration." So I just faxed a letter to the number the guy gave me and I'm pretty sure that NOTHING is going to happen. Girl I don't know how you got them to offer you a retake but I wish you would share. This is my second time taking the test. I only retook it because I had a 17 PAT the first time (all my other scores were fine). This time around, my PAT is a 21 and all of my other scores are the same or better EXCEPT FOR GCHEM which dropped by 2 pts so I'm pretty annoyed. I really hope they do something about it. I would rather have my old scores than the new ones with the Gchem score that dropped. and yes, I know I shouldn't have retaken the test just for the PAT since that part doesn't count that much. Stupid mistake on my part.

yikes that's horrible for them to do that!! and yes please...where did this happen..maybe it's around the same area?

i hope it's not near me and i hope you guys get it fixed...gluc!:luck:

First off, I'm a guy. Second, the person I spoke to, Kathy Hinshaw, basically told me that the BEST option I would get, would be to retake the exam, thereby voiding my current score. I'm sure she will tell you the same thing... just call the ADA and ask for her. As for you guys asking where and when I took the test, I took it in Puyallup, WA on 7/16/07 at 12:30pm. I'm sure though that this isn't just a "regional" error, and instead, is an error within the national DAT question database (if there is such a thing).

Congrats!!! You really rocked it! I definitely wouldnt retake it if it was me but I hear you if you were expecting higher that really sucks about the gchem question!!
Whatever you decide to do just thought I would say that I think you did REALLY REALLY WELL!! Congrats again!!! Good luck with the rest of the process!!

i took mine in vancouver, bc, canada in march.

aside from this.
i have another question.
when i took the RC, within the same article, everytime i click on "next question" or "previous question", the whole article rolled back to the top. So if i'm in the middle of an article, i finished a question and go on to the next, i have to spend time finding where i left off to continue reading.

this never happened to me when I practiced on topscore/kaplan.
but is this normal in the real DAT?

Yes, it happens in the real DAT, you're positioned at the first paragraph after every submit.

don't retake - your AA of 21 was obtained by rounding-off your average 20.6 to 21. So, even if your GChem had been 26 instead of 22, you would still have 21 AA, since you would have 21.4 which will give 21.

actually
the OP has 21.2 as average

(but i agree, i don't think u should retake)

If at least 16 problems out of 40 were identical ("word by word") to the destroyer, wouldn't this be illegal???

so for those of us who haven't taken the test quite yet, how do you suggest we study for a question like this if we have never encountered it anywhere???

I had the exact same problem in Gen Chem and from the sounds of the test you are describing probably the same test. I agree that I saw many similar questions on the DAT that was in the Destroyer. I had about 20-15 minutes left at the end so I reviewed that question for about 5 minutes. I thought I had it figured out by the end but who knows (probably not). I also thought that it wasn't displaying correctly. I took the DAT in AZ on July 30.

I have the same critique as joefosho on reading more overall understanding questions. I averaged 2-3 points higher in practice exams (achiever, kaplan, tsp). PAT angles and hole punching was hard on DAT but easy in practice I averaged 22-24s.
I am never going to take the DAT again! You couldn't pay me enough.
