Got my step II score back..is EM in my future?

NBME released my scores and I've got a 229/95. Is this ballpark for emergency medicine or should I start my application for that choice south dakota family residency spot? I don't mind south dakota and I think I can diagnose a URI, but I sure would like EM 😳

So, nobody on here can say whether you will match or not because there are more things than just board scores for selection criteria. It took all of 15 seconds to go to nrmp.org and click on match outcomes. That's the best anyone, aside from maybe the PDs on here, can tell you.

So, congrats on your score, it's pretty good. Is your score enough to get some interviews? Maybe, you beat the mean for matching in EM and the 75th percentile for not matching. But again there are at least 20 other selection criteria, not counting the interviews.

Seriously, good luck, though.

I've been on here a couple years, too, I didn't just "pop-up".
 
Posts like this can be aggravating because they are redundant and, as mentioned by a prior poster, have been addressed ad-nauseum. Even if your board score was 190, your answers would be the same. 229 is a great score, and will get you an interview. Asking redundant questions during your interview will lose your spot. Odds are pretty good you knew the answer to your question already😉

I've known people that failed step I who have gotten into EM. Likewise brilliant people with 240s who have had to scramble and/or did not match. It all comes down to your personality, work ethic, and what the rest of your application looks like. Granted, there are a few programs like Harbor-UCLA that will have a strict Step I cutoff, but that is more a function of the sheer number of applications they get. At most of the low-mid popularity programs every single applicant will have a shot.
 
I honestly believe that if selection committees could attach SDN screen names to applicants, they would be able to tell very easily who is lazy. To do a search and to read through a few threads before asking very redundant questions is a few minutes of time well spent.
 
A side question -

Below what step 1 score would you want to take step 2 early? or above what score would you want to delay?

Depends, you really have to ask yourself if you will do better. My step 1 and step 2 scores were almost identical with step 2 being slightly lower. My step 1 was hardly impressive, but I took step 2 late knowing that I wasn't really that likely to do significantly better (my schedule did not allow for a hardcore study period before I could take an early step 2).

Everyone here (including the Fatty McFattypants OP) needs to understand that there are only three board scores in EM. 1. Eww, not so hot, 2. Holy $hit I didn't realize scores went that high, and 3. Everyone else. Those with scores in the second or third categories will be judged on the rest of their applications (with the exception of a few programs who seem to put an emphasis on board scores ***cough, cough*** Harbor-UCLA ***cough*** Christ ***). Those with scores in the first category will have their options somewhat limited, but if that is the only problem on an otherwise decent application, they should have no problem.

And to the OP, shame on you. You know darn well that there are people on this board who who love to be sitting in your position. Congrats on your score. You've bragged to the web - feel better now?

ok...im really tired of the same "cry me a river" i got a 230 on step 2. Give me a break people! these are not problem scores....those are great scores for EM...and i can't seem to get it out of my head that people that tend to post those really know how good they are and are trying to make others feel crappy. Seriously...u know its a good score! if im wrong...then i apologize for reading into this but when you see it over and over and its obviously a good score....i have to wonder.
so go apply to your little harvard, stanford, etc and let the people with less than 200 deal with their real issues. Oh and just to let u know i was just over 200 and matched a very competitive program.
so to all the people that want to kick that poster....there is hope for everyone!

im a very bitter er intern on my ob month....im sick and get no sleep. so cut me some slack if u dont like my post
 
220+ is in EM territory.
Even though it is difficult the best thing to do is chill and wait.
By being a DO you are at a disadvantage at some programs.
Ferret out the ones that you are on equal footing with MD.
Remember it was your decision to go allo so man up.
In the mean time watch you tube.
 
I go to a DO school and didn't take step I so I really don't know what's a good, bad, or OK score. The score report said the average was 221 so a 229 doesn't seem all that great. As for being lazy I've seen the nrmp link but that only tells you generic averages. There are people on here that have been through the match and even select residents. I don't see how looking for a little inside info is being lazy.

Well, I don't think you are being lazy but I also don't think you should dismiss the link given above. The NRMP report tells you a LOT more than "generic averages" - it correlates percentiles of USMLE scores with match success and provides the distributions around the mean...
