Dentist Claims Breast Rubs Appropriate

WOODLAND, Calif. (AP) -- A dentist accused of fondling the breasts of 27 female patients is trying to keep his dental license by arguing that chest massages are an appropriate procedure in certain cases. Mark Anderson's lawyer says dental journals discuss the need to massage the pectoral muscles to treat a common jaw problem.

Police say Anderson said during recorded phone calls that he routinely massaged patients' chests to treat temporo-mandibular joint disorder, or TMJ, which causes neck and head pain.

Attorney Robert Zaro told administrative law judge Jonathan Lew at a hearing Thursday that he should let Anderson keep his dental license while disciplinary appeals proceed. Anderson would be supervised by two assistants and would no longer do the chest rubs, Zaro said.

Zaro said Anderson, 48, of Woodland, needs to keep seeing patients so he can feed his seven children and pay for his defense.

The judge made no immediate decision.

Lew suspended Anderson's dental license last month. He was charged with two misdemeanor counts of battery and sexual battery. Yolo County prosecutors are investigating complaints from more than two dozen women who say they also were groped in the examining chair in the last five years.

Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey Phillips gave Lew three new complaints, including one from a 31-year-old woman who said Anderson fondled her at least six times over two years.

She took to wearing tight shirts with high necklines, "and Anderson would still get in under her shirt and bra," according to a police report.

They never taught me THAT in dental school.

'Dean Anderson said he and his siblings grew up in El Centro and south Sacramento, graduating from Elk Grove High School.

Their father was a veteran California Highway Patrol officer. Mark Anderson, 48, graduated from Brigham Young University and the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Dentistry."

If you get to feel boobs all day at UCLA they should really put that on their website. I bet they could probably draw even more competitive students that way.

LOL you get pervs in any line of work. It just gives the profession a bad name when the press sensationalizes a case.

You do wonder though why the patients didn't report this guy earlier instead of going back with buttoned up clothing and tighter bras. 😕 Is it just because the dentist told them it was normal and an accepted therapeutic practice? I just don't get it.

It just adds to the "fear" of going to the dentist. Not only do you have to worry about "pain", but you also have to worry about the dentist getting under your clothes too.

I mean... maybe its a little easier for the media to make dentists look like crap b/c of the fact that they have to work so close to the patient.

I read in a newspaper a few years back that there was a chiropractor in OR got his license suspended because he performed vaginal adjustments on patients to cure migraine headache. His defense I recalled was that it is an acceptable treatment modality for migraine. Well, I do have migraine and too bad I am a man. I am suprised that he thought he could pass this through the patients he treated? DP

Totally acceptable in my "after-hours" clinic conveniently located inside a bar... In fact, business is so good that I may be limiting my practice.

hmmm. BYU and UCLA...

BYU eh??

seriously??
🙁🙄😡😱😕:scared::laugh:

i mentioned my fondling skills in AADSAS, strange that i got no love from cali schools 😳

lol @ dentists being professionals.

While it's obvious that breast rubs are inappropriate and downright disturbing to be given by a dentist to his patient, mustache rides are perfectly acceptable .... right!!?

no WONDER they added an ethical part to NBDE Part I!😛

Don'T believe everything you read or hear! I am Mormon and did not graduate from BYU. That's Hilarious! Some people subscribe to the holistic approach!

works for guys too...

Being half way done with Tinman's post, I was thinking, "He must have made enough money as an OMFS till this day (He's 48?) to be able to move on after getting his license suspended." But then I got to the line that mentioned he has 7 kids, and all I could say was, "OOpsie Doopsie".

If only this critically-important skill would be more acceptable between all women and men.

Let us all work for higher standards of caring for one another!
