general study habits?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just study 1-2 days before any Test depending on the difficulty and content. I study better at night between 10PM and 3 AM. I read and Highlight. I do nemonics, acronyms and silly relationships between new terms and old terms when memorizing. I cannot take notes because I can never understand them later. I can only study in groups or else I fall asleep. I Dont know what else to say, not very good study habits but they have worked so far!

I always thought highlighting was the biggest waste of time. I always look over to see what people are highlighting and it always seems like every single word is yellow. What's the point if I might ask a highlighterer?

Im not a compulsive Highlighter. I do not highlight with my hand, I highlight with my brain... lol. I just do key words, even when important fraces come up, I just highlight key words on them. Its more of a way of locating something if I need to go back and re-read it.

I have lousy study habits. In fact, I only remember 'studying' once last semester for a physics test. I didn't even study for the final, but that is because the prof graded on a curve and my class was full of *****s.

about 1-2 days before the test i read the book/notes, depending on the professor. i take notes about everything i don't understand. then i go over the notes, and take notes on my notes, writing down what i dont understand now. after a few set of notes ive gone over the things i don't get a bunch of times, and i'm left with a short set of notes about the real hard stuff.

I read most everything a professor recommended. (obviously depended on the class if I did). Then I would make note cards, lots of note cards and study those. And just went over my notes, made outlines, and sometimes group studied. If we got practice tests did those too. I always started studying like a week before the test because I found I retained things much better that way...thats just me.

I went over power points and read my text when they are terrible.

i agree. i also think flash cards, study guides/outlines, and charts are a waste of effort. i wrote my notes once in class, why should i take the time to write it again? i pretty much read the textbook and read the notes then i'm good to go. it worked well for me in college and now in dental school so thats what i'm sticking with.

For the first two and a half years, didn't study at all. Maybe looked at pictures in the book before a bio or history exam. Somehow passed, but not something you want to aim for.

What worked for me is attending class, also recording it on my Ipod in case I missed something or was unclear about something in my notes, and reading the assigned sections on the syllabus before lecture. I'm not a crammer, and I don't spend a lot of time studying the days before an exam. I don't think studying in excess days before an exam would help me much anyhow. I tried note cards once, got bored, and started flinging them around the library. I've never tried outlines though, and I think highlighting is a waste of my ATP stores.

Everyone has their own style of studing, but people should stick to the ones that doesnt hurt you. For example, go over your notes and finish all your homework right after you get home from school, that saves you time at the end, and you dont have to stay up until 2 oclock trying to finish it, and you go to sleep earlier, which helps you wake up in a better mood, and ready for some more learning 😛. Don't stay in front of the books all day long, try to manage your time, go out and meet new people, but remember... you are going to college to get the most out of it, and you'll from it what you put into it. 😛

also recording it on my Ipod in case I missed something

How do you record something on your Ipod? Do you mean you download a lecture first? I'm dumb when it comes to this stuff.

I believe that you can buy a recorder that attaches directlly to the Ipod. Im not sure if thats what Montserrat did though

Last semester I learned to study while checking SDN every 30 mins or so, I think my grades went up as a result!!!

I like to study early in the morning before class starts because that's when my brain absorbs the best. But I can only do it when tests are coming.
Good luck

Yup. Put a voice recorder mic accessory on my ipod, and placed it in the front row of the classroom.

I don't understand all these people saying they don't study. Where do you goto school?

I don't think most people (at least I wasn't) were saying that were slacking out of pride, but out of fact. Just letting others know that it is better to not screw around. As for my undergrad, the real UoP - the University of Penn. 😉

what i find works best is study for 15 minutes (very focused) Then take a 15-30 min break and come back and make sure you know the stuff you just studied. Once you know it move on. Thats how i studied throughout college and it worked wonders. I understand this may be horrible for some people. I lose my attention span after 15 mins so i take a break/watch tv then go back to studying.

if its a powerpoint class, i print out the lectures and write my notes on the slides...i used to be a compulsive highlighter whose papers looked like a rainbow... i scaled back to only important words and/or things of particular importance... i hardly read the book, only when i don't understand a concept or need more info...

i have a friend who writes curse words by important words/ definitions/ drugs etc...she swears it helps her remember them... maybe that's why she got all A's her 1st semester in pharm school...🙄

I have an iTalk for my iPod. It's great except when someone coughs or sneezes and it gets played back real loud in my headphones. no fun. Otherwise, it was great for undergrad.

Every semester my study habits change to accommodate the different teaching style every professor has. For biochem in undergrad, I printed the powerpoint lectures 6/page, cut them out and taped them into my biochem text while highlighting the pertinent info. That was because that professor went strictly by the text. For cell bio, I listened to lectures and wrote next to my powerpoint slides. Not much textbook time.

It's kinda trial and error and whatever I feel will work best for that subject and that professor.

I 😍 my highlighters and japanese pens in a BILLION different colors.

I have hurtin habits of studying because I never stick to them. It really depends on my mood. Sometimes I need to study like 5 days in advance sometimes the day before. Ill never forget studying for a biochem exam the day of the exam on midnight for the class at 9am and getting an 80 lol

how did you record it on your ipod? I have an IPOD but i don't think it dose that??

You can purchase an accessory attachment for the iPod.

I have the iTalk for my 3rd generation iPod. That was the first click wheel ones. It was about $40. Now they have lots of options for the newer iPods.

I'm not sure if they have them for the nanos.
