Thanks exPCM, but only the first few links work. The latter 10-15 have the "..." in the link so it comes up invalid. Must have been something cut and pasted wrong...I think only the first six work.

Wanted to make everyone aware also, a NEW feature of SDN which will start appearing on new threads (but as far as I know will not appear on older threads that get bumped) is a table at the very bottom of the thread which links to "similar" threads. It is present on this thread.

So now whenever someone creates a thread and says, "I tried to use the search function and didn't get anything like this" you can instantly be told that you were wrong. ;) Now, I don't know how this thing works, whether it just looks for threads with similar titles or similar contents. So it may have to be refined.

I have expanded the list of links and I believe the list now includes every ACGME accredited program.

It is my understanding that a program like the Ackerman Academy isn't accredited. Are you still eligible to take the dermatopathology boards if you attend a non-accredited program?

I think Ackerman Academy is accredited for SOME of their spots. To my knowledge, they take on a number of people, particularly from other countries, who are just interested in attending but not as an official fellow. But for the accredited spots they are like everywhere else, and they pay you as a fellow, etc. Boards application likely requires you to be certified from an accredited program.

Okay, thanks exPCM. This list of links is a good resource. Could we perhaps start a list of dermatopathology fellowship programs that have already filled for this next cycle? Only add to it if you are sure they've filled (i.e. directly from the program).

Yale
Emory
Cleveland Clinic
Geisinger
Colorado
Pittsburgh
Arkansas

if you are referring to 2009 spots, then here are others that have filled for sure:

MD Anderson
Memorial Sloan-Kettering

2009 Drexel-Ameripath spot is filled as well.

Does anyone know anything about UMass? Supposedly they have a new dermpath fellowship, but it doesn't seem to be accredited.

It was accredited last year but I think the fellowship director left and went to BU (where she originally was). So I don't know where that leaves it, as they are apparently conducting a national search for a dermpath director (at least as of a couple of months ago). They have a couple of other faculty who sign out dermpath, so I would presume things would remain the same in regards to the fellowship. But that would be a question to ask them, in particular the residency PD if there is no fellowship director listed or it hasn't been updated.

The dermpath director for Umass is supposed to be starting this month. One of my attendings graduated with her. As far as I know the 2009 spot is accredited which is why I applied there. I think they won't be taking anyone for 2008 though.

Anyone know what happened to Hopkins? I heard they were getting a new director of dermatopathology, and now the fellowship is no longer on their website.

Hopkins is going through a rough time right now. I spoke with their last fellow at ASDP. I'm not sure when a new director/ restarting the fellowship will start.

UVA

Still Open:

No fellowship for now:
Hopkins - until Dr. Junkins-Hopkins from Penn starts
CWRU

I am surprised one of the posts said Pittsburgh is filled. I know somebody interviewing there next month.

If the above posts are correct, then it would seem that the following programs have filled for 2009:
Yale
Emory
Cleveland Clinic
Geisinger
Colorado
MD Anderson
Memorial Sloan-Kettering
U of TN
UAB
Stanford
UAMS
Penn
UVA
Drexel

What happened with Case Western? I heard they were accepting apps for 2009.

I believe Pittsburgh has "filled" all their interview spots and therefore won't be considering anymore applicants.

I don't think our webpage mentions it, but UVA now has three dermpath fellows. However, the third position is unfunded, so it will usually be filled by a military person (the head of dermpath was in the military and did his fellowship at the AFIP).

Cam, How many accessions for dermpath for those 3 fellows?

Cam, How many accessions for dermpath for those 3 fellows?

I'm not completely sure. I think the national requirement is that you have 5000 cases/fellow. I believe we were around 12,000 when we had two fellows. However, we have partnered with the private hospital in town, so we now have the volume to support three. That being said, there won't necessarily be three fellows every year. For example, we'll only have two starting in July, but three have signed on for 2009.

Wake Forest has also filled. Not with me. :(

No! Fortunately I am not looking for a spot.

To my knowledge, UMDNJ is still open and probably isn't even interviewing yet.

Hello! I am new to this board and would like to seek some help since people on this thread seem to be quite familiar with dermpath fellowships. I am entering match next year and have been very interested in dermpath, either through path or derm, leaning more toward the path route now. In picking path programs to apply to, it seems obvious to choose programs that have a dermpath fellowship. However, does this mean that residents have more advantages at their home program? Or do people usually end up applying broadly? How competitive is the the dermpath fellowship? If you work hard and be involved in dermpath-related projects, will you most likely end up matching somewhere decent. Or is the "unmatch" rate very high for dermpath.

I am very interested in the academic track (3-yr AP) programs, such as MGH/Brigham, WashU, UCSF, Stanford and Hopkins. Do people have any comments on being a path resident at these programs and matching into dermpath? Sorry for so many questions. If anyone further along this career track can help, I would really really appreciate it!

I applied this year and from my experience, majority of the slots did go to internal candidates, whether they be Derm or Path residents.

Yes, even if you are an internal candidate, you will still need to cast a wide net. Despite my program (UTSW) having 5 spots, I still applied broadly.

My advice is that if you are sure you want to do Dermpath, do your residency at a program that has a fellowship. Not only will you have the best chance (among all other candidates) to get into your home program's fellowship, you will also get to work with the Dermpath program director with whom you can do projects and who can write you a letter of recommendation.

It is still possible to get a spot at an outside institution though. Two of us from our class applied this year and both of us got into an outside program. It certainly helped us that 2 of the most prominent people in the field, Clay Cockerell and Terry Barrett, are from our program and supported our applications.

I wish we had updated information posted on a forum like this back in the days when I was a resident and had to go through the fellowship application process. I have a lot of sympathy for current residents who are trying to navigate what I found to be a somewhat haphazard process. There seems to be an extremely wide variety of timeframes for applications, interviews, and selection of fellows by the different programs.

Heys guys,

I just talked with the dermpath fellow here and he was telling me the job market sucks for dermpath. He was saying how it was hard to find a job in a major city (where we are located at). Kinda surprised me since I hear such good things about the field. Can someone elaborate?

while he is completely wrong - the market is excellent- there are very few good private practice jobs in large cities.

Thanks!

I'm curious about MUSC and Florida too since nobody applying for this year has heard a peep from them. I'm guessing they are taking internal candidates, but it would be nice for programs to communicate better to applicants. Don't know anything about the other two either.
