Or at least it's one of the bestest, according to US News.

I'm browsing their site and see that they rated dentistry as one of the best jobs of 2008.

Oh, and physicians were ranked as one of the most over-rated careers for reasons that any pre-dent could have told you.

It's just a silly ranking, but I thought it was amusing nonetheless.

There was a thread in the pre-all forum about that article. Let's just say the pre-meds are quite bitter... 😉

I think people become MDs because they've been brainwashed into thinking that it is the land of milk and honey once you get that degree. 👎

Three out of the four people in my immediatley family are M.D.s.

One out of the four people in my immediate family learned from their mistakes....

<-- THE ONE. 😀

But seriously, to each his own. I just wish more people who pursued the M.D. realized what happens to family life.

If the median income says 120K, is it the net income of the dentist alone or the total income of the dental setup, staff, property and machines?

That is VERY true along with Scrubs and House. Those shows make MDing look glamorous and at times heroic when the truth is, many MDs will never save a life and may actually end up taking one... then again, true for some dentists as well... and airline pilots... and firefighters...

It's sad if people make decisions based on tv shows. 👎

I personally am not a fan of any of those shows.

dude, they're good shows! 😀

this isn't the first time though. after Top Gun came out in the 80's, application to the air force went up like 400% or something ridiculous like that.

what's really sad is that people still want to compare dick sizes with these two professions. jeez.

Its sort of unbelievable how much TV has glorified medicine. Dont get me wrong I love House and Scrubs as entertainment, but I realize its not close to reality. At my school we have truck loads of Biology Pre-med studnts who think that they are all gonig to be Dr. Christian Troy and have threesomes nightly in their villa in Miami after their 9-5 plastic surgery work day. Not saying that medicine isnt a great profession, I just think its sad how little people realize its really not like they show on TV.

What makes them even dumber is that Top Gun is a NAVY SHOW! I'm sure they were sorely disappointed when they couldn't wear a white uniform while singing "You've lost that lovin' feelin'" in a bar. 😎

I agree to an extent.

It is sad if people make decisions solely based on TV shows.

I think it is more common, however, for TV shows and movies to give people a distorted sense of how glamorous, personally fulfilling, or otherwise appealing a profession may be -- and that may be a deciding factor for some people.

Here's a similar example from my own life. When I was in college, I dreamed of becoming a professor or a teacher. But I went to an excellent high school and an excellent college, so I only saw those teachers and professors who has gotten incredibly good jobs -- a small percentage of all of the teaching jobs out there. It took me a while to get a better idea of what the "average" teaching jobs are like. That was a real eye-opener, and it steered me away from teaching altogether.

Just my inflation-adjusted two cents...

Why isn't there a show about dentists? 👎

Have you seen the whole nine yards? A movie but "Chandler" plays a dentist. hehehe:laugh::laugh:

I would agree dental is better than medical as a job but we are a bit biased in this forum. I bet in the medical forum there is a thread just like this one and it states the opposite. All that really matters is you love what you do...but dental ROCKS!!😀😀

Also check out "Reign Over Me." Great movie about two dentists (Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle) 👍

hey SugarNaCl... i had a question for you. I just got accepted into VCU and i was wondering.. how rigorous is the schedule? do people have any time for a part time job? plus is the city relatively safe? What areas do most people live in? plus would you need a car to get around or is the transportation system efficient? Thanks... i know thats a lot of questions but i've been wanting to talk to someone who's actually there.. thanks!
