About a year ago a few SDN pundits predicted that the DAT scores for 2007 entering class were going to be approaching 22 while the GPA's would rival those of medical school enrollees. Reviewing the stats recently released in the 2008 ADEA Official Guide to Dental Schools reveals that all the hype was for naught. Dutifully, the visible sky is still in the same position as it has been for millenia. The result is not unexpected in spite of the modest increase in the number of applicants.

thanks for the great post.

the decimals for the DAT AA for Colo and Harvard is missing. could you edit that? Thanks again for the best post of the year!

great post...

if you work out the numbers from 06-07 applicants/enrollees

you see from 06 to 07 11.9% more people applied, but the number of seats only grew by .9%. also, from the ratio of people applying and getting in from 06, only 42.4% of people got in to dental school, while in 07, 38.2% got in, which show a decline of 4.2% chance of getting in. and if you look at the average GPA/DAT score...then yes ,its is increasing....so yes, overall its getting more competitive.

just to play with some numbers now
in 10 years from now if the current trend continues
applicants: 41,368
enrollees: 5075
ratio of getting in: 12.2%
average gpa: 3.73
average dat aa: 20.97

but we all know trends dont always continue and they might hit a resistant or fall down to a support....

Quite true. I've read that when the economy goes down, the number of applicants to health professions (med, dent, etc.) goes way up. There's an inverse correlation between the two, because apparently with a low economy people seek more secure jobs. So pray our economy goes up. 🙁
