Here are the pka values of important compounds in Ochem that I would like to share with people. It's pretty important to compare the acidity of any of the two, three, or four compounds on this list. I use the pka values which I have memorized to help me compare them [smaller pka value meanst stronger acid]. However if you have never memorized any pka valus in an ochem class, or if you feel this is gonna be too much, just go ahead an keep the order in mind

Name of the compound, Pka value

HCL [not organic] -8 (strongest acid in this list)

Carboxylic acid 4

Ammonium ion [NH4+, RNH3+,...] 9

phenols 10

beta keto compounds 10-11

amides 14

water 15

alcohols 16-17

alpha hydrogen of ketones or aldehydes 20

alkynes 25

amines [NH3, RNH2, ...] 38

alkenes 43

alkanes 50 (weakest acid in this list)

Nice list. These are good to know for those little questions that ask which one is more acidic/basic.

There is no reason to memorize these. Any theory questions involving Ka's like these on the DAT, have the Ka given. Also as Dr. Green pointed out there is no set value for kw it depends on temperature. However th standard Kw is 14 not 15. Are these values under a specific set of conditions.
