To any of you who are/were Girl Scouts or can answer this...

I earned my Gold Award throughout my senior year of high school, but was not given the award until after I graduated in June. The award was an 80+ hour service project that was planned and completed by me individually. It was an interesting project, something that might be neat to talk about in interviews.

Which gets me to my question... Should I mention this on my application next year? (I wanted to ask now to get some current applicants' opinions.) I did a search and read that a lot of Eagle Scouts put this on their app. The Gold Award is the highest honor in Girl Scouts, and considered a lifetime honor. I'd like to put it under the Awards section, but I wanted to get a few opinions! 😀 Thanks!!

im an eagle scout, and i put my award on anything type of application/resume. while your award doesnt have the public awareness eagle scout does, it is still a formidable achievment as well as an excellent talking point. go for it!

Thanks for your response! I know, I wish the Gold Award was as well known as the Eagle Scout award. I'm thinking that it's a bit newer than the Eagle Scout?

Yeah I actually got both gold and silver awards but I didn't mention them on my application. I did, however, include that I was a girl scout for 13 years under my volunteer/EC's section. Don't know if it helped me but it was a pretty long chuck of my adolescent life so I thought it was worth a mention. If you want, you could include your years as a girl scout and then mention the award in the awards and scholarship section. It's really up to you. Since yours was awarded after high school I don't see how it would hurt to put it down (mine were a lot earlier so I decided to leave them out). You could always run it by your college adviser or a teacher and see what they think.

I was a Girl Scout for 13 years too! 🙂 I will probably put that down.. good idea.. I got the Silver award too but that was so long ago that I wouldn't list it either. Did you know they have a Bronze award now?? They started that a few years ago.

Yeah I say go for it. And I did not know about the bronze award but it makes sense, since you might as well have all three medals while you're at it, hehe. But I haven't been too involved in it since I had to stop when I was a junior in high school (had to get a job).

I would definately put it. I have on there that I am an Eagle scout...

I am still a Venture Scout (21 years old) so I'm going to put that I received my Gold and Silver Awards. Congratulations on your achievement and good luck.👍

You can put down any achievement you want, as long as it's done in college and beyond. It'll show that you have interests other than those in academia. However, as far as those achievements that'll help you get into dental school, those achievements are limited to those that'll help the school progress in what they attempt to do. Your research experience would help the school further knowledge within the field. If you have a JD, you can help the school further dentistry from an advocacy standpoint or within a political arena. If you truely have something of value to the school, be able to support it directly. Having 13 years of girls scout would definately show dedication to something, even thou its direct application to dentistry is more obscure.
