I applied last year and didn't get anywhere even though I turned in the application early and have 120 hours of volunteer. This summer, I raised the GPA up a little bit and raised volunteer hours to 240. Alot of schools are asking for fee, DAT, and their secondary now. I'm thinking that it won't make any difference if I submit same last year DAT score with slightly raised GPA and would only get early rejection again. Do you guys think I should wait until new DAT score then submit fee and secondary app? I'm scheduled to take new DAT in early September. Which GPA do school use? With Quality Points or Without Quality points? Do you think my GPA will make a difference this time?

Last year GPA: cum 2.99, sci 2.96, bcp 2.96, others 3.02
This year GPA: cum 3.01, sci 2.98, bcp 3.0, others 3.21
last year DAT:
PAT 17
QR 17
RC 17
Bio 24
GC 20
OC 22
TS 22
AA 20

Application submission - all application and secondaries were done by early September 2007 of 20 schools but still no interviews, nothing 🙁

Help, I'm begining to feel depressed and lost because I thought my science were good enough but apparently not enough to the schools.

Don't worry! Just relax for just a bit. I'm in a similar boat where my GPA is low, overall 3.22 and science is 3.16. I wa rejected from Indiana early, but got some great feedback from the adcoms. I was told that my DAT, extracurriculars, and basically everything BUT my GPA (including overall, science, and BCP) were too low for this applcation cycle. They recommended me to take a 1 year master's non-thesis program. He told me that i would get an interview the following year if I got at least a 3.3 GPA for grad school.

Bottom line, don't worry right now because you truly can't do anything about it. You need to turn in the application ASAP because you have a good DAT and a better one will not help you much more unless you receive exceptional scores. Just indicate that you are taking the DAT again.

As for now, you need look into a graduate school program because taking sciences classes here and there will not raise your undergraduate GPA.

Just turn in the application, study for that DAT again, relax, and just let the cycle pan out. But definitely call schoolo ask about recommendations of improving your statistics, that is a must. Good luck!

I have similar situatino where my cumulative gpa is 3.01, BCP 3.21 , science . 2. 8. I've joined a master program in chemistry and currently have 3.5 gpa . however, my overal gpa is still 3.03 . I just recieved a rejection from Indiana. i was surprised to recieve a rejectino that early because they asked for my application fee yesteday and send me a rejection notice today. too bad i already sent out the application fee.
My last year dat is
bio 19
gchem 21
ochem 27
QR 18
RC 17
Pat 22
TS 21
AA20
I'm rescheduled to retake this August, hopefully my new DAT score will be better.

Did you apply last year? TS/AA/PAT of 21,20,22 are solid scores!

Anyways, I'm in the same boat as you all. Hope we all get in this cycle! 😀

yup i aplied to 15 schools last year and got all rejected. That's why i'm hopeing to do better on the DAT this year. It's my only hope !

Thanks for the feedback. I got rejection from Indiana within a week too. We shouldn't even bother with Indiana.

Is Master of Public Health ok?

I already turned it in since late June, most of them are now asking for fee, secondary app, and DAT score. Should I just submit everything but the latest DAT score?

Is your master 1yr or 2yr?

So you already turned in all the fee, secondary app, and DAT score?

Oh man I am in a similar boat. I take my DAT August 4th and that is what I am banking on currently to get me in.

3.08 Science
3.14 Overall

I just finished up Biochemistry and got an A- and am waiting to see what difference that makes in my grades, probably not much. I have plenty of hours working/shadowing my father, who is a periodontist, as well as a general dentist. I do plenty of other things as well (See pre-dent profile)

I am curious if I should include an article about my school's reverse grade inflation policy in with my supplements to each school. My school makes it as hard as possible to receive an A in any class and I want schools to recognize that. I know schools like BU recognize my school as a "regionally competitive school" but I feel like schools in other states may not. I am applying to 17 schools (Tufts, BU, UConn, UBuffalo, Maryland, UPenn, UPitt, Temple, Howard, Nova, UNLV, Midwestern, Oklahoma, Ohio, Case, Illinois-Chicago, Louisville)

Any thoughts?

the master program is 2 years. i would finish it b4 fall 2009. I already sent in my DAT score cuz I heard you have better chance sending everything in early. i still havent done any secondary app yet. probably will get to that after retaking my DAT.

It is very disconcerting for me reading these stories of getting rejected with solid DATs and lacking GPAs because I am in the same situation. I screwed up early in my college career, took some time off then came back and did well my last two years of undergrad but it really did not raise my GPAs too much. This is my first time applying so we'll see what happens I guess.

:scared:ahh this is really discouraging 🙁...I have a low overall GPA 3.2 and science 3.1...I am taking my DAT the second week of august, have LOTS of dentistry experience and got a job as a dental assistant after a year of shadowing!! (no degree), also lots of volunteering, shadowing, research at UF's dental school, minority, female...you guys think I have a chance?

murff05, I don't think they'll care about the inflation policy. Many UC schools are that way. I would not try to mention about it, it would only make you sound like you are blaming on it as an excuse. They want to see we learn something out of it. Good luck on your DAT.

Queencrown, I think you got better chance than me since you are female, minority with lots of dental experience. 3.1 sci GPA is above their screening I think. I think I got screened out to a different pile because of my science gpa despite my DAT science score.

thank you...I am just worried that when they look at my app. they will see mi gpa and don't even look at anything else and just reject me :S

I have a quick question. How come when people start a masters program because they have a lower GPA in ungergrad (say, 2.8 ish/3.0 ish) they get 3.5+ in the masters program? I am not saying this is a bad thing or anything, because it's great, but whats the reason for the all of a sudden jump? Just wondering 🙄.

sometimes no matter what a person can do during their final years of undergrad, it is just not enough to overcome the low GPA they "worked so hard" for their first couple of years of college....so a masters is almost required task these days to counter that.

With the risk of sounding like a racist, sexist jerk, I think it is funny that she mentions she is female and a minority as if she is banking on the fact that she is a minority to get her into dental school. (which might be what actually happens)

wooow this really blows - im taking my DAT this thursday and was really really banking on solid scores to compensate for my sucky gpa of 3.18 and 3.0

dammit! i guess the only thing we can do is just wait and hope! so hang in there everyone - hopefully someone on the admissions committee will be nice and have some sympathy for us and give us a shot this cycle! 🙄
