Biology GRE

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I did! Mmmm I didn't think it was too terrible. I felt like I did about the same as on the practice tests I took in terms of questions I was sure about, ones I made educated guesses on, and the ones where I just thought to myself "I have never heard of that before!"

I wish there had been more biotechnology stuff because that tends to be the area that I know more about, or can at least make better guesses on.

There were a few plant questions that I just had absolutely no idea. Who really needs to know exactly how the glucose gets to the phloem?! I hate waiting for scores but ohhhhhhhh well.

So, what did you think of it?

I feel the same way...think I did fairly well. Knew some, guessed some, some things I wondered "HUH"!?!?!?! Just glad I'm a biology major!😀

I have to admit that it took me quite a bit longer than expected to finish (I tend to race through standardized tests). I definitely skipped a few questions where I really had no idea what they were talking about, but overall I think I did fine. I did feel that sometimes the wording on the questions made it hard to get to the substance of the question. I had this problem with the Kaplan study book as well. Anyone else feel the same way?

It was awful, but I could definately see in black in white which classes I learned something in and which ones I didn't(I was silently cursing my biochem prof and praising my ecology prof throughout the test).I think I'm going to take Plant Morph as an elective next semester just in case I need to take it again, but lets hope not.

Darn! Bayleevet, you got me all excited thinking you heard something. Nothing on this end either. Why does it take so long to grade a SCANTRON!

Sorry! I know...all they have to do is run it through and mail us the result! I only hope it gets to UGA by November 30. Does it usually get there on time???

Lab partner got his scores this weekend. I was like, "Oh, so how'd you do? 🙂" and he was like, "Well, I made a 720..."

:wow:

Be glad y'all ain't trying for OKSU in-state this year, 'cause he'd be your competition.

yowza!!! Do you think the schools get them before we do? Because if they don't mail them until the 26th like the website says...and then Thanksgiving and the weekend.....ARRRGGGHHHH!!!!!

Isn't that out of like 900? I think 720 was only 70-somethingth percentile or something...so I mean it's an okay score but not awesome really...

Highest I've ever heard of personally...

"Your raw score is the number of correctly answered questions minus 1/4 of the incorrectly answered questions. This score is then converted into a scaled score, which can range from 200 to 900. The range varies from test to test."

Apparently it's not as cut-and-dry as the general GRE.

I made a 580. :scared:

I suck at phrasing, but you can totally have my score (it is higher than 720)! I don't think I'm going to apply to the two schools who want the Bio GRE and really only took it for grad school admission purposes to make up for my piss poor GPA. 😀

It depends on the year. The way they explained it to me when I took it was that they can essentially curve the test by making it worth more points. They also explained that its usually still at or around 800 for the total.

Did you guys phone up to get your scores or did they come in the mail?

I really want to know mine (just to get it over with, really) but I am not going to phone up if it's going to cost $12 to hear them over the phone like the regular GRE.

Sigh, the waiting continues.

It definitely wasn't the year I took it, since my score was over 800 and it wasn't even in the 99th percentile (low 90s).

I called up this morning and got my score, just so I knew that they had graded it and it was in the system! It was $12, but worth it to have that anxiety out of the way

Hopefully, they'll come by the end of the week. (Sigh)

Did anybody get their score in the mail? With the holiday I'm really starting to worry if it will get to UGA by Nov 30th!

Grapevine told me scores are being put in the mail on the 26th, so we probably won't get them until the weekend and/or early next week?

Finally got my score today! Got a 710 which is not amazing but I'm totally fine with it, especially as I really didn't study for it as much as I should've... Reading the sub-scores is kind of hilarious though, I was in the 90th percentile for "Organismal Biology" and then did pretty miserably in the other two sections. Guess it just goes to show you what kind of bio classes I've taken!

Anyone else?

I can sympathize with you LVT2DVM. I also studied as much as I could and still bombed the heck out of it. I knew I left to many questions blank, mainly as a result of running out of time, but I had no idea just how many. Out of the 200 questions we needed to answer I ended up leaving 66 blank. That had to really hurt me. If I have to take that horrible test again I will need to work on finishing within the time constraint. Oh well, you never really know just what the admission committee will give the most weight, so we'll just have to wait. Hopefully good news will come for all though.

Leaving questions blank doesn't take off points, getting questions wrong does. So it's much better to leave them blank if you can't make a really educated guess!

But you also couldn't answer say, 5, and leave the other 195 blank... there's a proportion/math thing they do. I think if you only answered say 80 of the 200 but you got every single one of those right, you could make a really good score. If you answered all 200 and got 150 of those right, you would potentially have the same score. This is approximate, of course, but an idea of how it works... for those who didn't know.

Oh, and the general GRE is different, so don't get confused about that.

Not to be a jerk but I'd venture to say that if a person cannot at least make a reasonable educated guess at more than 5 out of the 200 questions then they deserve what terrible score they'd get from that. 😉

Yes, the point is that right answers = + points, wrong answers = - points and no answer = neutral, no points added or subtracted. So obviously you need enough right answers too. Just pointing out that leaving things blank isn't necessarily a death sentence and is better than getting them wrong.

I completely concur with everyone about omitting questions you can't make a reasonable guess at. Yet, what bothered me is that I'm fairly sure I could have made very reasonable guesses, if not correct choices, for many of the questions omitted. Unfortunately, I didn't choose to omit that many, it kind of just happened when I ran out of time. Most of those questions were actually at the end portion that covered the experimental data. Since the answers to many of the questions were staring me in the face on graphs or charts, I know I could have had more correct answers given more time, but that's not the way the test works. Maybe it was just me, but I really thought the test was hard. I know they change the difficultly level for each test, and score according to that difficulty level. It could have just been in my head though.

Yay one less thing to wait for! I got a 740, 75%, so I'm pretty happy with that. We shall see what UGA makes of it (and hopefully they will ignore my abysmal score on the ecology, evolution, and pop. biology part, hehe)

Where do you live now? Are you in-state?

Nope, I'm an Oregon resident and I know chances for OOSers at UGA are pretty slim, but hey, there is always a chance!
