University of Kentucky, Class of 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Couldn't be happier! It's nice to be able to read SDN for awhile and not in the nervous/compulsive manner of the last year...

I did EDP... anyone else?

Any OOS students know yet?

Congratulations too all.

Yeah, I was accepted last Wednesday via Regular Decision. I'll be in the Canadian delegation. Congrats to all in our class!

Yep! I'm OOS and was accepted 10/15. Pretty excited 🙂

I'm 95% sure I'll be at UK in the Fall. There's one school I'm waiting on that could beat out UK, mostly because of financial reasons, but it's unlikely that one will work out.

And hypothetically, if I was in Lexington celebrating.. a Jalapeno's margarita sounds great right about now....😛

Well, when and if you do decide UKCOM, let me know and i'll be glad to have a Jalepeno's margarita (or 2) with you! And good call on the location... for an OOS that you picked up on Lex pretty quick!

I did EDP, so I've known for weeks. Yet I'm somehow still celebrating! First place I stopped was DeSha's for a bourbon sampler. If it hadn't been for that, I don't think I would have been able to fall asleep that night.

Haha.. You caught me. I'm technically out of state, but I'm a Kentuckian at heart and pretty much spent every summer in Lexington growing up. (I'm a horse person if that gives it away!)

And I couldn't afford the bourbon sampler at DeSha's, so I picked the margaritas haha! Although when I interviewed at UK I did take the fiance with me to show him the city since he'd never been, and I think it was the DeSha's bourbon and cornbread that convinced him he could live there for four years or the rest of his life.

HILARIOUS! haha... and yeah, bourbon, bbq, and barely anything to do, I love kentucky!

Did anybody get their post-CBC snail mail package yet??

Haha, I don't know, but they said they were sending it.. Got the form for the deposit, but I think there's some fiancial info, etc. coming in the other

I still haven't gotten that yet. If it's not in the mail tomorrow, I may have to call.

Don't want them thinking I don't want to hold the acceptance because of the USPS.

Kentucky will always hold a special place in my heart even I decide not to come! It is my very first acceptance; this school is veeeery tempting. I'm OOS so I was kind of surprised. And you can't be their quickness! I interviewed on 11/1 and got the phone call on 11/6! Wowzors 🙂

Congratulations! :zip:

Yeah, they are remarkably fast in giving decisions. I would definitely call it a strong point. Good luck on the rest of the cycle!

Anyone get any other information after recieving their final acceptance letter? Perhaps I am just getting antsy... but it would be nice to have more information about what the future holds for us!

Nah, I just got the physical acceptance letter a little bit ago. I don't think they start hitting you up with orientation info until after New Years. I know there was a financial information day in February of this year, so I assume there's something like that for this class.

You can always call. Of course you know how awesome their admissions office is by now. 👍

I'm getting antsy too.. Can't they just send us something to entertain us, and remind us it's real? Even like a brochure or an informational DVD, or some useless and time consuming forms to fill out?

Anyone else get the invitation to the "Financing Your Medical Education" Seminar on 1/10? Seems like it'll be informative, plus there's a reception afterward for the accepted students.

Anyone going?

I'll be there... the guy in the back sweating bullets thinking about how much debt he is about to accumulate...

Ugh. Don't remind me just yet. Let me get through Christmas first.

Just got the good news last Thursday. I think there is a good chance I will be attending this school in the Fall.

I read somewhere we have two weeks to give them a deposit and an answer to the offer - is this all done when the physical acceptance letter comes in the mail? Also, I just filled out the online background check thing; does this delay when they send out this acceptance letter. Just don't want to miss the deadline!

From my understanding, it was 2 weeks from when you get your acceptance letter. But, in hindsight, that doesn't make a whole lot of sense does it? Because how do they know when you will recieve it. I think the main thing here is to get it in quickly and not delay a month while you decide. If you are that unsure, choose another school!

The background check does not delay the primary acceptance letter, but I think it does delay the FINAL acceptance letter. But, you don't get the final until they get your deposit(money), signed letter of consent(permission slip), and background check(report card).

That being said, choose UK! The curious george avatar is awesome btw, is that supposed to be glue in the bottle?

Also, we have a facebook group now...

So....just to get a little life in this thread:

Who went to the Financial meeting today? It sure was fun.... 😉

I did! This new hospital stuff is exciting... I can't believe how much money is being poured into UK healthcare... good time to be at UKCOM!

So who are you all? Name wise, I know at least 20-30ppl in the class already, but there were many new faces...

Since I am OOS and can't make it there, would you please tell us what was talked about in the meeting? Also do you know if we need to enter parental info on FAFSA to qualify for any scholarship at UK? When and how the scholarships are giving out? Thank you all.

Hello future classmates. Today I found out that I will be joining the class of 2013 OOS. Not too far away in Cinci though. Looking forward to meeting everyone! Couldn't be happier.

They just kinda told everyone what the FAFSA was and had some handouts about how to get into it (nothing that can't be found on their website). You don't have to put parental info on the FAFSA if you choose not to because professional school students are considered independent from their parents. There are some scholarships that are for people of a disadvantaged background that would require it, but not all scholarships do.

Other than that stuff, it was mostly another recruiting event aimed at telling you how good UK is, where it's going, all the cool stuff you'd get to do there and stuff like that. They're trying to pull in the multi-acceptance people.

Hi everybody!! I'm so psyched to be headed to UK and can't wait to meet you guys!!...so I'm OOS and don't know much of anything about the Lexington area!...any advice at all on housing options??...

Hey,

If anyone is interested in discussing options with respect to a roommate, PM me. I have a lead on a 2 bedroom condo in close proximity to school owned by a resident I work with. 700 total a month.

congratulations brent
since we can no longer do bets on who does better on exams since we'll be at different schools.. let's just go a little further and have a bet who does better on the USMLE in 2 years haha

Lots of housing options. Most of them suck. They are either expensive (newtown is like 600/mo) or too noisy, or just plain old. BUT... it is not like your going to be there much anyway!

Get someplace close, where you can walk/ride to class. You may pay a little more, but its worth it not having to drive. You can expect to get a pretty nice place (relatively new, clean, big enough) for under 400/mo w/out utilities. Looking right around 500/mo all said and done. Of course, this goes up if you live alone.

yup...just got accepted. C/O 2013 UKCOM. You have no Idea how happy I am right now...

Ok back to earth...do you think its better to live on campus than to live off campus? I looked at their efficiency apartments, and its like $485 per month utilities included. Any suggestions??

WOW...we are gonna be wildcats..

Any 2nd or 3rd years with heads up on what UK COM will be like for firsties?

Anyone going to the financial forum?

Yes, we do!

Better to live off campus... but just barely off campus is the best. I've lived in Lex for 4 years now... and i live in walking distance and love it. Remember though, in Lexington, walking distance can be anywhere form 2 minutes off campus to 30... which is LONG walk, but a short bike ride.

It's all up to you, what kinda place you want, what you want to spend etc.

Lots of good options...

And for the ^, yes, going to the lender fair... if that's what your asking. Julie McDaniel seemed to think it was a good idea... and frankly, she's awesome and knows WAY more about this than we do...

I do know that the gross anatomy lab and the first year classroom is about 3/4 miles apart. The walk is mostly indoors, but it's a hassle.

Hey future classmates,

I'd like to invite any other OOS members of the class of 2013 who, like me, have already moved to Lexington but don't yet know anyone here to go for coffee or beer some time. I'm a 25 year old male that is working at UK in a research position prior to school starting. If there is anyone else in some sort of similar situation, we should get together and toast to the class of 2013!

I would definitely be game, however, I don't live down there yet.
I received a letter requesting documentation for speeding violations that weren't mentioned on my Amcas. These infractions were 5 years ago. What documentation could I possible provide? A letter saying Guilty as Charged?

I also want to let everyone know that I am always up for a drink or to give a tour of Lexington to those who are new. I also have extra room in my apartment if anyone needs it until they get settled.

These documents are public record... but you need a program (usually, like WestLaw) to access them. Calling the court where you were issued the violation is the first step. Just ask for a copy. They should be able to either provide a copy for you, or tell you how to access it.

That's funny Mr Louisville Bird! (I'm a fourth year at UK) They are about 50 feet apart in the same hallway

Also, as a graduating 4th year, I'm going to be selling my house in Lexington. PM me if you think you'll be looking to buy! It's a very affordable little house.

That's not what they told me on the tour. They just built that brand new facility over off Leader Ave by where the new College of Pharmacy building is going up. The class room is over there, but the anatomy lab is still in the William Willard building.

ok... not really concerned about a 5 minute walk... maybe it is because i have lived in lexington for 4 years...

So welcome to lexington. Anything under a 20 minute walk is a "short" walk. People will consider you lazy if you drive just about anywhere for under 5 minutes.
