Official South Carolina School of Medicine Class of 2013 USC SOM 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got my acceptance letter last week, as well! So excited! 🙂

Yeah! Congrats 🙂 is usc your first choice? are you planning on goin there? where u from?

Yeah, it is definitely up there! I am actually at USC right now for undergrad 😍. I think we interviewed on the same day... October 8? Where are you from??

Hi Everybody,

I received word last week that I have been accepted!🙂 Can't wait to get started and meet you should you choose USC SOM!

Congratulations guys. I'm at USC SoM right now (Class of 2012). You'll love it here!

Got my letter yesterday, woo hoo!

I received my acceptance letter just in time for Thanksgiving. Congrats to everyone else out there as well!

I got my acceptance letter today!!! I think I should have checked the mail more often since the letter was dated Nov. 24th. Only five days after my interview!

Oh well, I'm in! I loved it there. Congrats to everyone else! 😀

Congrats! I think you interviewed the same day as me.

Congrats! I think you interviewed the same day as me.

Thanks! Yeah I was there on November 19th. I wish I would have checked the mail a little sooner, but I wasn't expecting anything for another week or so!

Yeah, I was surprised at how fast they got back to us (I got my letter the day before Thanksgiving after interviewing on the 19th).

USC SOM c/o 2013!! I'm so excited. I can't wait to get started! I found out Nov. 13!

so i called the admissions office couple of days ago and was told that i am on hold. (post-interview) is this normal for many applicants. I am IS btw.

Do most usc students who will eventually get accepted are placed in this hold category? I was also told that very few get accepted on that same day as the interview.

Also, how does usc look at LOI?

nvm that previous post. I am IN!!! very much excited. usc deserves a lot of credit for getting back with a decision very quickly. I found out 12/17.

I couldn't agree more. I interviewed on a 11/19 and the acceptance letter was dated 11/24. Wow!!!

Congrats on getting in!

So who is going to USC for sure?

I probably will be. I still have to interview at MUSC and I am on the waitlist at Wake Forest, but since I already live in Cola I won't have to move. Also its the cheapest, so it wins every time.

does anyone know when do we have to send in those residency HIPAA, etc. forms? soon as possible or in mayish?

In other words, i am talking about the deadline.

I am curious about this, too. They can't expect us to know our future address or anything. Plus, if you're not sure where you're going, it would be a hassle to have to fill out paperwork for more than one school. Has anyone checked with Shelley? I could, too, but I don't want to harass her if someone else has the info.

Anyone else get accepted recently?

Hey guys. Last year, I submitted my paperwork with my permanent address in FL. Once I got a residence, I gave them my local address (last in the summer). They just want to make sure they can get information to you throughout the summer (especially with regards to M0 day and all that jazz).

On a sidenote though, if you ever don't know anything, you can always call the Shelley or any of the other people who work in the admin office. They're awesome and will never be annoyed.

Congrats to all of you future docs!

I've just moved back to columbia and am taking the kaplan prep course for the MCAT (had my prereqs years ago). I am hoping to get advice on the experience of being accepted at the USC SOM.

My family are here and I am determined to stay. I am a non-traditional, early 30's-single parent of one and my family discourage me because I already have a very lucrative career without the high malpractice. I've put it off but It keeps coming back. Becoming an allopathic doctor just must happen-it's in my blood!

I live a few blocks from the SOM and plan to visit and hopefully study in the library there. Let me know if anyone's interested to chat sometime--perhaps on campus or at panera/starbucks.

On your mark, get set, ready anddddd

okaaayyyyyyyy...thank you.

ready andddd GO!

Good luck in your future endeavors.

Jenny J,

I can sympathize with your situation, as it is much like mine. I quit a lucrative sales job in the medical field to go back to school. I would advise that you meet with the folks in admissions and make sure that you know exactly what they think you need to do to get in. (Sorry if you have already done that.) Then no matter what it is, whether it's get a graduate degree or take post bac courses, do it well. That's what I did and it worked for me. It was a long hard process that took me about 2 years to complete. However, I'll be starting in August so it was definitely worth it. I'll be glad to help you and give you any advice that I can.

Best of Luck!

thanks

I haven't met with admissions but spoke with them on the phone. nothing personal about the application process except theyre more clinically oriented (rather than research).

I have a doctor of chiropractic degree (4 undergrad yrs/4 chiro school) and have a 3.96 gpa. God's given me amazing skills of learning and memorization so I didn't have to study much but the year of cadaver labwork was grueling and subjective.

The prereqs were the same for both careers but it's been a long while since i've seen or heard of physics and chemistry! I've read lots of blogs so heard I need to do shadowing and hospital volunteering. However, If USC SOM is more clinical, rather than research based, then I would hope managing patients with their musculoskeletal complaints would suffice. I say all this with a questioning tone because I don't know.

I look forward to taking care of all the patients general health (no surgery please)--I've heard soo many horror stories and am excited to carry more responsibility and use the extent of my brainpower for the health of my patients--including my chiropractic.

are you going to continue to work? I hope too. I worked 20 hours a week while in chiro school. although many of the books are the same for the first year, we didnt do any dosing and pharmocology--we never used a calculator--just memorized lab values. Also we skipped around in the books and i assume med school will go more in depth (let me warn that the clinically oriented anatomy book was difficult for me and i always looked at netters more often).

I was tempted not to go back to school because of my age and the fact that I want to accumulate wealth instead but I figure, who says you gotta retire at 50 (32 yoa now) also the wealth thing--that's just selfish of me when i know i could help so many more people. well i'd love to hear your story, are you in school now? do you have children? do you know your specialty? I like fam. med and endocrinology.

well it was great chatting and i appreciate your advice and enthusiasm. Keep it coming. once you get into classes you may not have much chat time!

almost forgot to ask--do you mean it took you 2 years to apply and get accepted to SOM or are you referring to post bac work? if it takes 2 years for the application process i'd better get started right away.

I will definitely be attending USC in August...

I guess that brings the list so far for sure to:

p.s. try to recruit anyone else you know that has been accepted or is planning on attending to the thread

Just wondering if anyone on the waitlist has been admitted since being placed on the waitlist. :scared:

I know my letter states that the ADCOM will continue to evaluate your application at each meeting....

Well, I already like our class! I am on post-interview hold at MUSC. I live in Charleston right now, so I would prefer to stay here, especially since my SO can't move and has no free time! I really like MUSC and feel at home here, however, I really liked USC when I was there. I guess I am 50/50. Should know more in a couple months.

Like MILK07 said, I will also wait for a couple of months for getting the final decisions from other places. But, I really liked USC. First, because of the tuition and also because of their hospitality. Plus, I think knowing how to diagnose certain diseases using ultrasound will really give us an upper hand during residency. Plus, to me there wasn't any cut throat competition amongst students. I really like this because you really do not want this when you are preparing to become a doctor.

add me to the list! I'll see you in August! By the way I got wait listed last year, so for those of you wait listed...don't give up. If you don't get in, just try to improve yourself in the next year.

does anyone know about how usc offers scholarships? Are you automatically considered once you are accepted or do you have to apply?

There is an application form online, but I have heard that as a first year if you were going to get a scholarship they would already have talked to you. There are very few first year scholarships. That is what I have heard at least. Go to the web site click on prospective students then financial aid,

Is anyone (definitely going to USC) looking for a roommate? I scoped out the apartment scene this past weekend and I'm ready to get plans in order and get started! A lot of the local apt complexes have waitlists... just so you know.

When I was there, I thought I heard some students mention that almost everyone lived in some apt complex about one minute from the school. Have you looked at that one? I definitely want a roommate that is a medical student and since I don't know anyone else that is going there, it looks like I will be making some new friends!

Does USC have roommate finder parties or anything like that?

There's a fair number of people living in Hampton Green and Hampton Courts (both on Gills Parkway). As far as I know, most people have no major complaints. They don't really have roommate finding services, but if you contact the office, sometimes they'll send out an email for who's interested in a roommate and such to everyone who's been accepted thus far for your class (if they've set up the Class of 2013 listserv). That's how a couple people found their roommates for this year. M0 day is also another great opportunity to meet people. A few people met their current roommates that way as well.

Hope that helps.

janneyc: Thanks for the info! What exactly is MS0 day? Pardon my ignorance, but I haven't heard much from USC since the acceptance back in November!

Pretty positive it's in April at some point and for some reason I'm thinking on a Friday. I'm honestly not completely sure. If I see one of our class officers today at the Neuro review, I'll try to remember to ask.

USC sort of lets you wander until they get most of the class accepted because there's not too much to alert you to early on. You should start seeing more paperwork arriving in the mail around May - June/July. There's a checklist at http://www.med.sc.edu/student_checklista.html that they'll probably tell you about later on in an email (all the stuff you'll need to turn in, etc.). I wouldn't worry too much about it right now, but I figured I'd go ahead and throw it up here.

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply back about M0 day. Between that neuro exam, spring break, and a phys exam this week, I've been distracted. As of right now, M0 day is scheduled for April 24th. I'm sure you'll receive something in the mail within the next few weeks about it. :]

Check on facebook for a group USC School of Medicine Class of 2013. You can join and meet some of the people that are for sure going to USC in August...Please join if/when you are for sure going to be a part of the class

Hi Janney,

when does usc give out info about financial awards based on fafsa?

I'll try calling Jerel tomorrow. He is not at his phone today.
Do you have to do something else (like fill out some other forms) to get grants/loans?

Honestly, no clue. I'm under HPSP so I never really paid much attention to the finances stuff. I'd call Jerel though, he can help you out the best. He's the main guy I have gone to to handle canceling/altering financial aid. He is also usually pretty quick to answer emails. Good luck.

Hey, I tried searching for the group on FB but couldn't seem to find it. Would you mind posting a link?

I hope we hear something soon about MS0 day. It sounds fun! Plus, if it really is on that Friday, I could take a day off from work, which is always nice.

Any new acceptances?

I'll try to post the link later but just search for USC Class of 2013. I think its USC School of Medicine Class of 2013.

You'll find it, even just search USC 2013

I found it, thanks! I also got the letter for MS0 day on April 24th. Can't wait to meet future classmates and see more of USC. Who else is going?
