Hi Everyone,

Just got back from my DAT. THe "post DAT" write ups helped me get my bearing on where I was so I thought I'd write one as well. I had the "piano" DAT (I guess people know this one?) Here are my scores:

PAT: 23
QR: 21
RC: 23
Bio: 24
GC: 24
OC: 22
TS: 23
AA: 23

Here are my impressions of each:

Overall: The questions were easy to understand and were not meant to trick you. Mixture of difficulty ranging from basic to obscure.

PAT: Keyholes, not too difficult. Most are very obvious which way they are trying to put the object through. Angles: Definitely a bit tricky. Harder than Kaplan for sure. Hole Punching: Way harder than Kaplan. Check out achiever for some practice. TFE: Not too bad, easier than achiever, harder than kaplan. Folding: About equal in difficulty to Kaplan. One more thing: you can't put your finger on the screen BUT I asked if I could hold up my dry erase sheet and the guy said "sure." Not positive if that's standard procedure but it might help with keyholes.

QR: Time consuming. Not a lot of tricky computations per se but some relatively tricky word problems. Kaplan focuses too much on computation but is relatively good practice for making sure you speed through it.

RC: Main thing I noticed here is the dry erase pen is horrible, you can't really take notes on the passage. So I ditched the idea of a passage map and just went straight to the questions, reading through the passage as I went. There are more inferrence / overall tone / why did the the author include this type questions than on practice tests.

Bio: Some very straightforward stuff, some pretty out there stuff. I'd suggest knowing the Kaplan book + reading over your intro bio book a few times on the hopes of remembering obscure questions. I didn't use Cliffs but maybe that's a good help as well? I did better than expected on this section.

GC: WAY less computations than Kaplan. Most answer choices aren't actually computed out. Pretty standard array of questions.

OC: Some basic, some kinda obscure stuff. IR question I didn't know. Know your reactions of course. There wasn't any really weird naming.

Practice Tests:

Achiever 1:

PAT: 20
QR: 23
RC: 22
Bio: 19
GC: 21
OC: 19

Achiever 2:

PAT: 21
QR: 21
RC: 23
Bio: 16
GC: 18
OC: 18

Achiever 3:

Bio: 16
GC: 20
OC: 19

Notes on Achiever: The sciences are obviously way harder, especially bio. On the real test you don't have almost every question be those ridiculous I,II,III,IV type questions that are multiple questions in one. The PAT is challenging on achiever but is drawn well.

Topscore 1:

Bio: 21
GC: 19
OC: 17
PAT: 23

Topscore 2:

Bio: 21
GC: 20
OC: 18

Topscore 3:

Bio: 21
GC: 21
OC: 25
PAT: 23
QR: 20
RC: 29

About topscore: decent difficulty of questions on sciences. PAT is very badly drawn with multiple wrong answers etc. Some PAT sections are too easy on topscore, others are just plain badly drawn so you don't know what to pick as an answer.

Kaplan:

Full Length Practice Test 1:

Bio: 20
GC: 23
OC: 25
PAT: 28
RC: 25
QR: 25

FL PT 2:

Bio: 21
GC: 19
OC: 21

FL PT 3:

Bio: 24
GC: 19
OC: 19

Study Habits:

I'm a DAT/MCAT tutor at Kaplan for the last year and a half so I know a lot of the core material really well. That being said, I graduated in 2004, so it's been a while since I took the classes. I feel like that hurt me on the obscure questions.

I studied the Kaplan big book mostly, then just took a lot of practice tests. I also had access to the Kaplan online materials etc too.

Glad to be done...let me know if you have any questions. Good luck to everyone!

awesome scores man. could you explain how holding the paper up can help with keyholes?

Great job! Relax now!

About when did you take your Top Score practice exams? and you Achiever exams? I have those programs and I want to compare my progress with yours. Thank you so much for the detailed breakdown!

I took the achiever and topscore practice tests this last 2 weeks, with "Topscore 3" being the last one. which I took yesterday. I had read topscore was most indicative of your actual scores, so I wanted to keep one for the day before. The kaplan tests I did about 2 weeks ago. I also took the midterm and final of Kaplan's but don't have actual scores on them. I can say I was consistently getting 28-29 on PAT for Kaplan and I remember the final being easier overall than the actual DAT (I think I scored a 25 ish on the Kaplan final). This also might be because of my bias towards the material however, as a teacher for them 😉

Some people like to hold their fingers up to the angles in order to normalize the lengths of the arms. That way they are comparing angles with the same arm length. If you use two of the sheets you can do the same thing. I didn't find this all that helpful, however, just figured I'd let people know I was allowed to do it 😉

Theoretically you could measure the distances etc using your dry erase sheet, but this would take way too much time away from other sections.

A few people have PMed me so I thought I'd respond here:

For reading there WERE a bunch of tone type questions such as, the following weird best describes the tone: pessimistic, informative etc

I know a lot of the practice tests focus only on search and destroy questions (which there were a lot of). You may want to save the tone questions for last because, once you've read through the passage 3-4 times trying to find all the search and destroy questions, you'll probably have a decent feel for the tone.

As far as QR, the main thing I found is to not second guess your answers. Get an answer, move on. Practice enough to know which questions you need to guess, mark and skip so you can finish the test on time.

My biggest improvement came when I stopped spending too much time on the initial questions by checking my work, and simply trusted my calculations and moved to the next question. That way I could finish the test in time.

Good luck everyone!!

Hey thats funny that you ditched the hole passage mapping approach.
So you basically searched and destroyed or did you read the entire passage? Would you say the RC for the most part related to achiever/top score and kaplan?

Oh and of course, awesome job. Great score in the sciences especially bio and thanks for the post! Very informative

How I approached the reading was to skip to the first question (past the full passage) and then read through (not skim) the paragraphs until I found the answer. I then went to the next question. If it was on a topic I remembered already reading (while looking for the answer of the first question) I skimmed that section for the answer, if not I continued reading the passage where I left off.

By the time I went through a few questions I had read the passage entirely and had a good feel for the tone type questions.

Right, I seem to use this method on practice. It saves time and i still drop a few lines/keywords on paper to know where to look later. Seems to work. I am a little concerned about tone type questions however

To be honest, the tone questions really were not difficult. If you read the passage through once you should have a decent idea of the tone. That's a pretty essential part of reading comprehension...

Great scores! I'm confident you'll get your pick of the litter, so congratulations on that.

What did you use to prep for your OC/GC?

Thanks! I'm most likely going to choose UoP (I had a preadmissions interview already) along with the 3 year HPSP air force scholarship (interview tomorrow).

I used Kaplan almost exclusively for both OC and GC. I taught the Kaplan DAT class for a year (I received similar scores when I took the DAT in 2005, qualifying for a teaching job) before taking the test, so that was obviously helpful in making sure I knew the fundamentals. Then I studied hard for about 2 weeks before the test.

I think the Kaplan book is actually quite good for OC and GC, but lacking a bit in bio. The online workshops etc you get from taking the class are also very helpful and cover a lot of the highly tested subjects. Luckily I had access to those for free as a teacher.
