same time as dental

I am currently applying to medical schools...
however, if that fails I want to do dentistry.... so how does that work?
Can I apply to dentistry now, as well? Or do I have to wait until I get rejected to all of the medical schools first?
When can I take the DATs? When can I apply to Dental schools?
