Hi there,

There is something that really bothers me, and that is these 30-40 year old individuals who are coming back to school.. well because they were stupid and didn't take school earlier when they were young... and now they want to take our seats in the med school... I am sorry, but you should of studied hard when it mattered... TWENTY YEARS AGO... Its not fair for these people to come back to school, and compete with us. Those seats are for us, not for you. We are not making the same mistake you did, and we should be rewarded for it.

This is ONLY targeting people who didn't care about school in the past... It is by no means targeting individuals who had financial problems, or any other type of issue earlier in their lives.. those people DESERVE all this...

Anyways, if people find this offensive, then fine, remove it, but this is my opinion.

I guess I missed where it said med school spots were FOR "us".... being a young twenties college kid. I kinda had the impression they were for whoever was qualified.

someone please call the waaaaambulance

🙄

I think if you talk to some of these older people that you have such contempt for, you'll find that they have lots of perspective and life experience that you can learn from.

Although from your post, it sounds like you think you pretty much have everything figured out. Nice attitude.

I've met a few non-trads the interview trail. I'd love to have these people in my class.

What a crybaby.

🙄

Agreed. I don't know where the OP is getting this sense of entitlement from but nobody ever said med school is only for people in their 20s. And since the non-trads by definition are the minority, chances are if you don't get into medical school it isn't because of a non-trad, it is because a 20 year old had a better application than you did.

Didn't you post a rant a week or two ago about how Caribbean and DO students are inferior and how mad you are that they can take the "easy way" out? Get a life, nerd.

This is the same twit that started his essay like 15 minutes before it was due, right?

Oh, wait, you're only targeting people who didn't care in the past. Since my old gpa is 3.8, I'm exempt from you're hatred, I guess. Lucky me.

Wow. Someone thinks highly of themselves. Perhaps these non-trads are taking "your" seat at schools because you come off as a giant tool?

so if you don't get in and decide to better your application, you don't deserve to go to med school
?

news to me...

from what I've seen, the older people who come back to school are more motivated to do well than younger people because they know how much life can blow without a decent education.

No man, did you even read what I wrote? If i dont get in when i apply, I will apply again(after I have improved my application or whatever) I am targeting people who didn't give a crap about school... never thought about doing anything in their lives.. just had fun and partied or whatever.

Med school admission does not "belong" to people in any age group. It belongs to whichever individuals the schools choose to award it to. And there is nothing superior about going to school at a young age vs. a later age. School is not morally superior to any other undertaking, nor are people who put off school stupid. I returned to school at this year at 26 and consider myself far smarter than most of the drunken 18-22 year old brats who dominate the undergrad ranks, and am certainly far smarter than yourself. I'll be happy to steal your spot in med school when I'm 29 and then you can come on here and bitch about how a non-trad denied you what was rightfully yours.

in order for these people to get accepted, they must have paid their dues by travelling a much more difficult road than you have to get to where they are. perseverence is very telling.

no offense that doesn't make you seem very smart...not at all

Well, not every non-trad is someone who didn't care about their grades on their first attempt/trip through undergrad towards a bachelor's. The people that didn't care about their grades for the most part do not get accepted when they have big black marks on their prior academic record. See below.

Sure, there is anecdotal evidence of non-traditional applicants with cGPA < 3.0 (but usually sGPA and the more recent coursework is much, much higher) getting in, but that is the exception rather than the rule, and they usually make a pretty compelling case to be admitted through their ECs, LORs, essays and the fact they apparently more life experience and perspective on the human condition than you.

Yes, I am a non-trad. I'd be happy to take your seat, especially if you have such an attitude of entitlement towards it.

Seats are reserved for the applicants judged to be the most qualified, not the younger/youngest. I'm sorry.

Right, because that is the ONLY reason someone would ever decide on something besides medicine when they were younger. Because they were too busy getting drunk. Dude, how do you expect to become a doctor with that kind of ignorance?

Good point. For the rest who are "mocking" me, why don't you actually give me a good reason to change my opinion?

People are people. They aren't numbers, they aren't ages--some people decide on medicine early, some later. Some of those 30+ year olds might have had kids, or served in the military, or done any number of other things. Just because you made the decision to go into medicine 10 years before someone else does not make you better or more perfect than them. And personally, as a patient, it wouldn't matter to me at what age my physician got their degree as long as they were competent.

To add another perspective, in a time when we will need increasingly more competent, intelligent physicians, I welcome the non-trads. As more medical schools are built and expanded we will need more qualified people to fill those seats, regardless of their age.

I'm not sure what you mean by travelling a more difficult road. Non-trad simply did not plan to go into healthcare as early as trad applicant....last time i checked trads have a harder time competing with those who have much longer time to gain more experience and booster their CV

So if you don't go to medical school right after undergrad, you're a bum who is partying all the time and not doing anything with your life?

The self-righteousness in that statment is just overpowering.

he said he doesnt want people who wasted life drinking and partying in undergrad to take spots in medical school. im saying that in order for those particular people to get into med school, they have to swim through hell and high water to actually have a chance to get into med school.

Try volunteering when you're working 40 or more hours per week, taking pre-reqs while also holding a fulltime job, or getting letters of recommendation from professors when you're 10+ years out of school.

Non-trads absolutely have to perservere through a more difficult road.

This post actually justifies medical schools taking the older, more experienced students. By complaining about other people and not focusing on yourself and improving your own application, you are showing how immature you really are. The world looks a lot different in your early 30s than it does in your early 20s. My advice is to stop moaning about how unfair it all is and spend some time focusing on yourself, but then again you clearly do not have to tools or maturity to do so.

Hi there,

Yes, because if you don't go to school, you must be stupid. People aren't allowed to change their minds on what they want to do in life.

and now they want to take our seats in the med school... I am sorry, but you should of studied hard when it mattered... TWENTY YEARS AGO...

Yes, because it matters less now than twenty years ago. Because volunteering and studying while holding a job, going back to school to take the prereqs, dusting off those books to prepare for the MCAT is admirable only when done by a college aged kid. Also, "our seats"?

Its not fair for these people to come back to school, and compete with us. Those seats are for us, not for you. We are not making the same mistake you did, and we should be rewarded for it.

Clearly they've all made a mistake. Non-trads don't have fulfilling work lives or past experience before they decide to apply.

This is ONLY targeting people who didn't care about school in the past... It is by no means targeting individuals who had financial problems, or any other type of issue earlier in their lives.. those people DESERVE all this...

Right, because working much harder now to overcome a low undergrad GPA says nothing about their work ethic and perseverance.

Anyways, if people find this offensive, then fine, remove it, but this is my opinion.

It is in fact your opinion, but you'll find many who disagree. I am just one year out of school and I have learned so much more about life than when I was a college senior. I have nothing but respect for those who decide they want to do medicine and jump through all the hoops while keeping up with their job, their families, and their finances, all of which weren't big issues for me (and it was still difficult). Imagine what they have to go through!

excellent. 👍

And just to expand on that, try getting involved in research if you're not a student and don't live on campus. Try applying to medical school with no pre-med advising office.

I would also guess that most traditional pre-meds find their shadowing and volunteering opportunities somewhere on campus.

Non-trads have to take the initiative to seek out all of these opportunities independently.

I have nothing but the utmost respect for non-trads, and I'll be happy to have them as my peers and colleagues.

Good point. For the rest who are "mocking" me, why don't you actually give me a good reason to change my opinion?

well you won't change your opinion.....changing your opinion takes couple of years and requires maturity...

Because you're pathetic and no one respects you online or in real life.

I have a 25% essay due today at 6:00(look at the time, its 5:25 PM), and I started 10 minutes ago. Also keep in mind that I am also using some of my time to type this message on SDN.

Now, can anyone top this level of procrastination?

Now that you mention it, maybe that's why OP is so worried about non-trads. 🙂

Sone non-trads aren't there because they screwed up. They changed paths. Furthermore, some "traditional students" may not have the maturity or foresight to realize what a huge decision they are making, and what a blessing med school is.

I would love to take your seats.

And I think you're a troll

Good point. For the rest who are "mocking" me, why don't you actually give me a good reason to change my opinion?

So, I resisted posting on this thread as long as I could and couldn't hold out anymore.

First, you brought all the mocking onto yourself with your immature, emotional, and rash generalization of non-traditional students which has no factual basis. There's a good lesson to be learned here - people don't like hearing that kind of BS. Get over it, learn from it, and move on.

Second, you would be surprised to discover that many non-trads actually did relatively well in their respected areas of study and/or career fields prior to considering a career in medicine. Many simply took a different path in life than you did and have come to this point as highly competitive applicants that are more attractive to medical schools than some traditional students. On the flip side there are some very competitive traditional applicants that do quite well in the process and are selected over many non-trads. That's just how it is. The best thing for you to do is to (1.) grow up and get over it (2.) worry about your application instead of others' and (3.) make yourself a more competitive applicant.

In case you're curious - yes, I am a non-traditional applicant that's been accepted to medical school and will be starting next August. I earned it through dedication, hard work, humility, and sacrifice. Hopefully, you can figure out how to do the same.

****** everybody read this******

What's your point? I get away with procrastination. Did you read the entire thread? I said I have a high GPA despite the fact I put very little effort in school, which explains why I keep doing it.

No one is stopping all you twenty-two year olds who don't get in from applying when you're 30.

You all have no idea what might be waiting for you around the corner. Your girlfriend might be at the student health center taking a pregancy test right now. You might flunk a test this semester. You might get mono and miss all next semester. Your parents might lose their jobs and need you to quit school. Who knows? You might appreciate being able to extend your journey a little longer. There are plenty of reasons people become nontrad besides partying and not giving a flip.
