Hello folks,

This week is when early match results are being released (GOOD LUCK! :luck:), so it's time again! I'll be collecting data again on residency appointments for this year's graduating MD/PhD students. This year I'm in the clinics, so posting of results will most certainly be delayed, or may not even be posted until I get to a vacation week. (I'm on surgery in March!)

If you have results from your school or your intended school, please share - post here or e-mail doctorandgeek(REMOVE)atgmail.com

General Comments (some copied from last year):

1) I'm tracking graduates from MD/PhD programs. Students obtaining a PhD independently prior to medical school are impossible to track, and furthermore I speculate that these students have little interest in research, at least in comparison to their MD/PhD counterparts. Therefore, I've limited this match list to graduates of MD/PhD programs.

2) Do not make any assumptions as to the quality of a program's match list based on the presence of highly competitive matches, as the reasons for choosing a specialty and location are complicated more than just name reputation. In general, beware also of statements by programs claiming that some high percent of students get their "first choice", as you can't rank programs you don't even get interviews from (actually you can, but your chances of matching are zero). About the only real negative conclusions one can make about a program is that it has excessive number of people who fail to match, or that a program consistently has graduates match in research-unfriendly specialties or at non-academic institutions.

3) In past years I've provided sources for data to help with reliability of data. Most reliable are program webpages and other official announcements, then contributions by e-mail or PM from students who I can verify, then contributions of anonymous students. Least reliable is "correlate", which means I take an MD/PhD program's roster and compare it to a match list with names available online. As always, corrections are appreciated, but if I have data from somewhere higher on the list - especially an official program announcement, I'm taking the more reliable source as gospel.

4) I know some of you have been asking for the 2009 results to be posted on the website, but I seriously haven't had time. Please be patient - I'll try to get it done during my pediatrics outpatient month in February. In the meantime, all of the results since I last surveyed all of the program websites in July are attached to this message as an excel file.

 Why not call them Dr.? They're so close to finishing med school and they should have all completed their PhDs.

I think Wash U is one of the schools that does not award degrees until the training is entirely finished.

Nice to see so many MD-PhDs choosing psychiatry. I think people are finally starting to figure out that psychiatry is the real brain-related specialty.

Hopefully, those choosing neurology after obtaining PhD's in neuroscience won't be too disappointed to learn that they will be spending much of their time thinking about blood vessels, muscles and peripheral nerves.

The one person in research is doing it mainly for family/logistical reasons.

Curious as to three students listed as MS4's on Iowa's MSTP website, but not listed on the publically available school wide match list.

Those three students recently started their M6G year in Feburary. So those currently listed as M6G are those who have matched and will graduate in May, and then those who have year of clerkships and will match next March and graduate in May. At Iowa, M6G designates those in clerkships after defending their dissertation. We only have 52 weeks of clerkships after we return to clinic, so we don't have a full M3 and M4 year. Typically we return to clinic in Feb-April and then graduate the following May a little over a year later.
