I'm always amazed that every year one of those CA programs(even UCLA a year or 2 ago) have one or more unmatched spots. How is it even possible? For those of you that interviewed there, was the quality of the program really so bad that the allure of living CA could not overcome it?

LLU likely didn't rank anyone for that spot, during the interview they were talking about only taking 2 6-year residents this year. As far as UCSF, the program director announced he was leaving about a month before rank lists were due which probably seriously affected their match.

Opening at UCSF General Practice Residency for 2010-2011 Academic Year

UCSF GPR successfully MATCHed all 4 positions, however one applicant has since withdrawn for military obligations. We now have an opening for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Serious applicants should have a strong work ethic, be an organized and dynamic team player, have strong communication and clinical skills, and be interested in working in a hospital setting with medically complex and special needs patients. Our residents take call approximately 1-2 weeks per month and go through block rotations including 2 weeks of hospitalist general medicine, 3-4 weeks of anesthesia, and 8-12 weeks of oral surgery. Other rotations include 1-2 days per week of general dentistry outpatient clinic, OR dentistry, oral medicine, and TMD and orofacial pain. Didactic courses include History & Physical lecture and hands-on course, Head & Neck anatomy, and a variety of lectures, seminars, and workshops. I'd have to disagree w/ you about LLU. LLU is a great program but it's logistically the most inconvenient program in CA. Covering 4 hospitals that are at least 30 min drive apart EVERY time you're on call...dude, that can't be attractive to applicants. I'd rather spend that driving time in doing actual sx procedures.

Also, didn't LLU lose a 1st-year resident this year? If so, why would they want less people this year....? My guess is that they simply didn't match the spot because most of the 9 or so people who interviewed there this year went elsewhere. It was smart of them.

I still don't have a position either. There's (almost) no program available for me to even apply.

I don't know if it's just me but getting a gpr nowadays seems to be lot harder than it was in the past.

And the other thing I don't get is why bother taking an applicant for a lengthy tour and spending up to an hour talking about the program if you're not going to accept him or her? Would it really be any less professional for interviewers to send the unsuccessful candidate home right away?

I interviewed there for the oral surgery program. Dr. Sadoff is the Chairman and Program Director for both the GPR and the Oral Surgery programs. He was great. Of all the places I interviewed he was the most cordial and polite director I met (not to say most of the others weren't great), and in talking with other applicants at other interviews, they felt the same. The facilities were good (not the best, but I saw much worse at other locations). The hospital is centrally located in an overall nice area. The oral surgery residents were all very cool, and it was evident that they got along well. From what one of the oral surgery residents said, they also had a great relationship with the GPR residents. If you're interested in either program, I'm confident that Dr. Sadoff would be more than happy to discuss his programs with you, you should give him a call. I ranked them 2nd of 12. And more than once have wondered the outcome had I ranked them 1st. Hope that helps.

Does anyone know which Dental Anesthesia programs still have openings? What is taking them so long and why is there no communication to applicants they have interviewed?

I have a question about practicing in NYC. Does we required to have a residency for at least a year.
Can I work in other state for a year and then apply a license for NY state?

I know its late, so please dont chastise us...last minute decision due to some personal issues. Any help is appreciated of course. AEGD at Temple has a tremendous amount of fixed prosthodontics as well as removable since they do not have a prosthodontics program. St Barnabas in the Bronx does lots of endo. AEGD at Temple has one spot open and St. Barnabas has 2 spots open.

What are the details of this program?
Is the only difference between the AEGD and the GPR the on-call schedule?
What's the pay like and the hours?

From this there is NO On call and hours are 8:30am-4:30pm M-F. No weekends! Check it out, I heard its not perfect due to the area and somethings being old etc, but the Education is really good. One guy I know who did the program few years back told me it was a mini-prosthodontic program since they have no post-graduate prosthodontics program.

I believe UConn AEGD and Montefiore GPR have an opening. Contact the programs now if you are still in need of a program. UConn AEGD is good, but their patient pool has decreased. An AEGD in a city is ideal. I have heard good things about Montefiore GPR especially with Implants.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Internship/Fellowship Available Immediately
Jacobi Medical Center/North Central Bronx Hospital/Beth Israel Medical Center

Background: The reason the spot is available is one of the interns was selected for a residency position at a nearby hospital that opened up during the course of the year. This was partly due to the tremendous confidence that other programs have in Jacobi interns. The previous interns have a very high MATCH success rate.
Duties and Experience: The residency program has a very broad scope practice. The intern will have a tremendous exposure to orthognathic and reconstructive surgery. There are also an overwhelming number of IV sedation cases including implant placement, wisdom teeth extraction and all other dentoalveolar cases. There also are very busy outpatient clinics that the interns will manage and gain valuable experience in dental extractions and emergencies. There is a wealth of knowledge from excellent surgeons with years of experience and great recognition in the surgery community.
Academics: Monthly journal clubs and weekly lectures on a variety of subjects. Monthly CSI conferences with the Plastic Surgery and ENT departments. Bi-weekly orthognathic conferences.
Salary: Competitive PGY-2 Salary of $58,168 plus $2,500 meal allowance for the year.
Benefits: Excellent union benefits including: $600 annually for use on books or PDAs, free Rosetta Stone language course, and $1,500 annually for conferences. Also, the Union offers dental coverage at no cost and there are a variety of medical health plans at no cost.
Requirements: Must have a year of GPR as this is a PGY-2 level position
