It's a pleassure to hear from both of u.. Hopefully more people would gradually start joining this discussion as the school sends more acceptance letters.. Any of you are interested in finding roommates?? I'm from New Jersey and need some help selecting an apartment. It's tough to judge just from the infromation the school sent me. The prices vary a lot for similar sounding places. It would be nice if they included pictures of the apartments and the sorroounding areas. Sergio if you could help me with that, it would be great!!

No soy del area norte y no se mucho de caguas. Los otros dias pase y la urbani mas cerca que queda al lado es turabo gardens. Quisiera algo muy cerca para poder dormir mas jeje...nada cualquier cosa me dejas saber. estoy en busca de roomate...

i think we're all looking for roommates... if you guys would like, pm me your preferences and stuff, we'll see if we can start matching up. sergio, i'm the same... i neeeed my sleep. if i don't get 7 hours i go crazy. but maybe that's why caffeine is so huge in med school 🙂

Los prados? how far is that? yeah, that place look really nice. I'll call some friends tomorrow to get more info about "los prados"...see ya!

here's what one of my friends said...

"those are basically the best apartmentsa lot of people in the class live there
its a little expensive but people say its worth it because they are nicer apartments and safer
if you get in with roommates you will be able to lower the price significantly"

i'll call the other one today and see what he can tell me.

Si yo hable con una amiga. Me dijo que los prados queda a 15 minutos (with traffic) de la escuela...Tambien llame hoy a la escuela y me dijeron q posiblemente la orientacion sera a finales de junio y q habra un seminario en julio...San jose es un poco mas lejos...nos mantendremos en comunicacion...saludos
 
Los Prados suena bien, aunque personalmente preferiria algo que quede mas cerca a la universidad. Por el momento no estoy seguro si voy a llevar a mi carro o si me compro uno alla, porque me han dicho que alla son mas caros. Sergio cuanto mas o menos crees que cueste un Honda Accord como del 2000 o mas nuevo? En lo que respecta a mis habitos a mi tambien me gusta descansar y dormir 8 horas diarias. La idea de preguntar a personas que estan ahora en la med-school me parece excelente.. Sigamos buescando y mantengamonos en contacto!! Btw.. wooww Junio thats way earlier than i thought!!
 
I forgot to mention that I would also strongly prefer a place that is fully furnished..

In my case they took about two months to reply. My interview was 10-Dec-09 and I received an acceptance letter 11-Feb-10. Hopefully for you is shorter due to the fact that half the time that I waited the school was on winter break. Good luck and keep us informed of any final decisions

Aqui los autos son caros. De esa marca te puede salir facilmente en mas de 5,000. Tambien puedes buscar en clasificadosonline en la seccion de autos. Alli hay de todas marcas y precios. Nos mantendremos en comuica saludos👍

yea. 15 minutes is kinda far. i just texted my friend whose in 3rd year there and i'm waiting for him to reply on what he suggests for apartments. estoy de acuerdo que preferiria vivir mas cerca de la escuela... y tambien un apartamento mueblado.

let's keep in touch guys... we're gonna be stuck with each other for 4 years! :laugh:

alright he texted back and said that there are a lot of options and he's gonna let me know if any good deals pop up... so i'll keep you guys informed.

Y si saben de algun sitio para vivir que este bien bueno pues me lo dejan saber!! Ahh me olvidaba, ya me agregue al grupo de facebook.. mi nombre de aqui son las iniciales de mi nombre real, so si me ven me agregan como amigo!!

I haven't seen this thread before :S! Hi, I'm Yary from Puerto Rico and the creator of the fb group ( join up!, pretty please 😳) Most of the people @ the fb-group are from the 2013 class so It would be cool if we had more of us there!👍...
About the housing...Caguas Tower is really good is not that expensive, is secure and it has a pool 🙂 it takes 5 minutes to get to school with traffic!! Turabo Gardens might seem closer, but believe me, with morning traffic if you go through the wrong side it can take up to 30 minutes to get to school. But it's still good!!

Los Prados is awesome! jaja expensive but not so much with a couple of mates and the pool is like heaven!... EXG parece que queda lejos pero esa calle no tiene casi tráfico y subes super rápido a la autopista que con dos salidas adelante te queda la escuela es refácil llegar y salir!
Turabo Clusters is good too... is close to Los Prados.(misma situacion para llegar)

Ahhh y si quieren preguntar algo a los de 2013... pues Ismael, Michelle, Coral, Carlos y Jose son de esa clase... Asi que Edgar y Sergio le pueden preguntar a ellos 🙂

A mi me gusta la idea y el lugar suena buenisimo, pero hasta ahora no he encontrado nada disponible ahi y tampoco esta en la lista que recibi de la escuela. Sergio si sabes algo let me know... Also, I hope the school sends us an academic calendar soon with a definitive date to start classes and orientation so that we can start planning accordingly

Once you are accepted the schools will send you an email with a student catalog and a list of possible housing facilities along with their costs.

EXG si te refieres a Caguas Tower ...EXG si te refieres a Caguas Tower...http://www.clasificadosonline.com/UDRentalsDetail.asp?ReForRentAdID=282461.... ese no esta amueblado pero si se de amigos que consiguieron en ese building y que fue amueblado (si me entero de algun apartamento amueblado aviso) Y el calendario de verdad espero que lo envien pronto para saber cuando nos tenemos que mudar y hacer los arreglos... Si la matricula es en junio y tenemos esos cursos de redacción de research paper en julio (Creo q en la Universidad del Turabo) deberiamos saber con tiempo para poder estar listos. La secretaria de admisiones me comento que tan pronto ella tuviese el horario lo iba a enviar por email (pero eso fue hace 3 semanas)

Pues tengo entendido que si, uno tiene que estar presente. Cuando hablé con Jaymi (I guess we all know who she is) le pregunté algo de eso y me dijo que planificara mis viajes para mayo, que en junio (mediados) y julio (ultimas 2 semanas) estuviese en Puerto Rico. 🙁 (not so happy about that!)...

Me gustaria vivir con una persona de PR para que siempre pueda practicar mi espanol. No tengo mueblas ni casi nada para decorar un apartamento en Puerto Rico. Si a alguien le interesa, se puede mandarme un mensaje en facebook (I just signed up on the 2014 page).

Tambien, a alguien sabe cuanto cuesta para mandar un carro a la isla? No quiero vender el carro que tengo aqui... 🙄

pregunté a un estudiante de SJBSOM y me dijo que el no estuvo en la matricula en el mes de junio, pero luego le cobraron $50 por hacer matricula tardía. And if I know anything about a fully furnished apartment I will post it in the FB group. (so far I've heard of two but the students that have them don't know if the owners will rent them again. If I know anything for sure I'll let you guys know)

Hey EXG! I haven't received any emails from the admissions office or the financial aid office personally, but a fellow classmate forwarded me the academic calendar and we have our matricula on June 24th, the white coat ceremony on June 30th, and classes for our research project start July 1st. So... we all will be meeting each other very soon!!!

I'm still interested in finding a roommate, so if anyone is interested, send me a message. Gracias!!
 
Thanks SpanishPeach!! I received the academic calendar like two days after I posted those questions. However, I still have not heard anything from the financial aid office. I submitted my FAFSA almost 2 months ago and no financial aid package yet 🙁..
Even though we are going to start way earlier than I thought, I am really excited to finally meet all of you and to begin our medical education 🙂!!!
Try the facebook group to find a roommate.. There's a lot more people there than here. I would try sending personal messages becuase some people don't check the "roommate discussion" regularly..
 
I am considering applying to San Juan Bautista but I have some concerns:

Is is true that American University of Antigua is in the process of buying the school?

Is it true that less than sixty percent pass USMLE step 1?

Is it true that the hospital is financially insolvent with a low census unable top provide an adequate clinical experience?

Is it true that the Middle States has not fully certified the school

Any info appreciated

This is in response to Elena's post:
1) I highly doubt that AUA is buying or planning to buy the school. I have a friend attending AUA and I know that they recently invested millions of dollars building a new campus in Antigua. Where did you hear that?
2) According to the student who gave me a tour of the facilities during my interview, SJB's USMLE passing rate is on par or very similar to most schools in the US. He added that the school provides you with all the tools to succeed. Obviously those who take advantage of those tools succeed and those who don't usually struggle. I guess you can call the school to find out a more precise number.
3) From what I've heard SJB provides excellent clinical experiences starting the first year. This is a school dedicated to the community and they often have workshops that allow students to interact with patients. Where did you hear that the hospital is financially insolvent? Again, you can contact the school to be 100% sure but i higly doubt it.
4) SJB SOM is fully accredited by LCME which is the one that really counts and by the Middle States and other institutions that allow graduates of this institution to be able to practice medicine anywhere in the US. In additon, LCME certification assures you that you are not considered a foreign graduate and participation in the MATCH program for residency.

If anybody has information that contradicts what i said please let me know.
