When deciding on your p4 rotations, do all pharmacy schools allow you to choose where you want to go, if available? Is it just a list you can pick off of ?Are you required to go back to your pharmacy school at all during any of these times? Did a quick search, didn't see anything about this.

That would probably depend on your school. At UK they had a list of rotations around the state and we could choose the ones we wanted, to a certain extent based on availability and demand. There wasn't anything that we had to return to the college for besides our mid-year review, although most of us had to do a rotation at either the VA or UK hospital.

So your P4 year you couldn't go to a different state and do all of your rotations? There were only ones from KY? My friend from LECOM said he could go almost anywhere for his rotations, is this not representative of most pharmacy schools?

I can tell you how it works for my hospital: Every institution has a contractual "articulation" agreement with them that they allow "rotaters" to come from. Basically, a minimum standard that ensures the school meets the hospital's criteria for a "rotater."

But since I'm not a P3/P4 and haven't done it myself, that's just hearsay from the residents in one of my many interrogation sessions with them + observational learning.

You can also try to set up your own sites as long as you have a willing preceptor and fulfill the requirements of the rotation per the school's guidelines. But, from what I have been told, there is usually a pretty good list of rotation sites to choose from depending on the school. Some choose to rotate in state and others go out of state.

You should probably ask at a pharmacy forum, not pre-pharm, but at my school, you can't choose where you do your rotations. You get assigned to a specific rotation site as a loterry and unless you have some sort of special circumstance - a relative you have to take care of, children or etc - you can't pick your own rotation site.

Going out of state seems challenging, since I thought you need to have an intern license to do your rotations in that state. ( I may be wrong, someone correct me 😕 😕 😕).

Your license is only valid within your state, so I'm not sure how you would go about doing rotation out of state. 😕

We had a Creighton girl, but she might've been a special case since it's an online pathway-kinda deal.

We had people from colorado, south dakota, new mexico, and others. UA lists their rotation sites on the net and they are all over the country and international. Minnesota lists theirs, too.

Good thread. I am curious about this too. I don't want to do my rotations in Georgia. If I want to do my rotations out of state can I call the pharmacy school in that state/city and ask if I can do my rotations with their students? Can I do that? I don't see why not....

Depends on the school. Ours has a good network with some programs out of state (but mostly in adjacent states), but chances are you won't be able to do all yours out of state. We also have the option of doing out-of-network rotations for our 3 electives. That means you can go wherever you want if you find places to go to. Our 5 core rotations all have to be in network though. Other schools do this differently. Better to ask your school's experiential education dept.
