The plan should be to take the DAT once. The best time to take it is after all the pre requisites have been completed and after a thorough review of the material.
The information was compiled from the 2009 and 2010 ADEA Official Guide to DS.
There are several factors that should be noted:
1. Only 10 ds will consider an application without DAT scores.
2. 14 ds will not accept the Canadian DAT
3. For those with multiple DAT scores- 25 ds will consider the most recent score; 29 will consider the highest. A handful will average the scores
4. The latest DAT dates for consideration of application should be viewed with caution. Those considering taking/ re taking the DAT late may want to reconsider their decision since school will be unlikely to hold off the presses especially for applicants that may be close or on the cusp.
