NYC Free Clinics?

I want to volunteer at a free clinic this summer hopefully, especially since I've heard that clinics give students the opportunities to actually have a hands on experience with medicine. Are there any free clinics in NYC that you guys recommend?

Thanks, I'll look into it. Started doing hospital volunteering and its fine, but it's just bed making, serving food etc. I want a little more.
 
Also where did you hear about these programs. Any site with a list of clinics etc?
 
I applied to the Albert Einstein program, but the only problem is that it's only open on Saturdays and I want to do a program that will be open throughout the week. Are there any other clinics around NYC that are open 5 days a week looking for volunteers.

Surely you can put a little effort into finding them rather than expecting people on sdn to do all the legwork for you. I suggest you contact the Einstein program and see if they can refer you to any other free clinics, if you are unable to find any.

And you are assuming that I didn't put any effort into finding them. Don't reply if you don't have anything useful to say, don't really understand that. This thread may also help other people in the nyc area who may want to work at a clinic, it's not just for me.

And thanks Etorphine. I looked into the NYU one a while back, they were filled for the summer. I'll check out the clinic in Harlem as well.
 
So I have contacted a few clinics and a lot of them are looking for Med Students, etc. I've looked at the ones affliated with Columbia, Cornell, Mount Sinai, etc.

Are there any jobs in the NYC area that you guys recommend for a person just finished with freshman year. I've even looked at my schools career website and can't find any clinical internships/volunteering positions. I volunteer at a hospital and want to end that soon just because I'm wasting my time just walking around because the staff really has nothing for me to do.

Want a real hands-on experience as a premed? Become an EMT. NO where else would you be allowed to lead in a medical situation. Gun shots, cardiac arrests, Bleeding, MVAs, alcoholics..The list just doesn't end. AND you get to talk to and observe doctors in ER. I want to do ER medicine because of my experience as an EMT. Do consider it
 
^There was a discussion about this on this website and at the end people said it wasn't worth it. Any other former EMTs want to chime in?

That was paramedic (1 year of training and $8k tuition). EMT entails much less training and is worth considering.

Hey then I might consider it. I've been looking for a job that would give me first hand experience and I don't think any hospital can do that for me. I'll google stuff, but if anyone can show me any places where EMT training is available in NYC, it will be greatly appreciated.

Also what does being an EMT entail, what is the training, what do I have to do, what are your experiences?

Was looking into volunteering in a free clinic and came across your post.

Laguardia community college does it for free in a short amount of time and placement is 100% Everyone i know that came out with an EMT basic is working!

call and ask that you heard they sometimes hold free EMT courses. It is random, if they are not doing it at the moment you can always pay for it.

If you join a volunteer ambulance core, you don't pay for the course but you have to remain a member for at least one year. Most VAC's in nyc are busy. Ridgewood, forest hills, glen oaks, jamaica estates are usually out every night with a lot of calls

edit: I'm currently an EMT and I was the one who asked about the medic program, I decided against the medic program because it really is time consuming, the classes aren't bad but the rotations will kill you. Being an EMT (even if you only ride as a volee) is great experience, you get loads of patient contact and it's a great way to learn how to write quickly/efficiently (damn pcr's!).
