Hi fellow test takers,
I started this thread for anyone who will take the DAT in August 2011. We can share this experience of our journey to Dental School, while helping each other out in any way possible.
I am taking my DAT on the 27th. When are you taking it?

I will start by sharing the DAT material I am using to prepare for the test.
I have the Kaplan Blue Book, Crack DAT PAT, Cliffnotes Biology and Campbell Biology, DAT Destroyer, Math Destroyer, Chad's Videos for General Chem and Organic Chem as well as DAT Achiever that I will get later to see where I stand before I head out for the test.
Good Luck everyone!

I'm taking it on the 15th. Less than 100 days! Yikes.

I'm using Kaplan Blue Book, Crack DAT PAT (Ace), Schaum's Outline and my old Campbell's bio text from high school, some Kaplan QR sample tests a friend who took the test last month gave me, Chad's videos (both GC and OC), and I will probably buy Achiever as well. Plus any free stuff I can get my hands on.

I'm still in the midst of finals but will start studying for the DAT sometime next week. My biggest weaknesses are o chem and bio by a long shot. For bio I just have huge knowledge gaps in certain areas that none of my bio classes have ever covered, so hopefully reading relevant chapters in Campbell's should clear those up fairly easily. O chem I've just never been that good at, but from what I've heard Chad's videos should really help.

I am too working on my finals this week. Will get started with the test prep next week.

I was wondering how much Cliffnotes Bio differs from Schaum's outline?
Is there anyway I can get my hands on those QR sample tests? on ebay or something?
I have heard this a lot of times on sdn that it is easy to prepare for ochem and gchem, but biology is definitely hard to master. That is why I am planning on reading the campbell atleast twice. Hope that helps though.

You are definitely missing out on DAT destroyer! It will help you bunch with Ochem. You can watch Chad's vids to get notes and then apply those concepts solving the Destroyer questions. Orgoman also sells Organic odyssey, but won't recommend it, because it is way too broad for the DATs.
Hope this helps!
Good Luck 🙂

I will be retaking my DAT this august as well. I just started studying today & im wondering what peoples take is on schaums BIO book? ive seen this at my local barnes and nobles and basically all I'm using to study for bio is Cliffs and some kaplan notes here and there (but really mainly Cliffs) so im wondering what other materials I should be using for Bio. last time i scored a 19 with just cliffs but i want to get a 22 on bio. I felt like going into my last DAT i was SOOO pumped for bio i thought i knew everything but, some of the questions were SO weird i just had no idea. Last time i hardly went through the destroyer Bio section though, im wondering if cliffs and dat destroyer will be enough for a 22?
I dont have campbells textbook and i feel like if i had a whole textbook i wouldnt know what to study from it!!!
thanks guys

I never looked at Schaums before and would like other DATers to respond on that. Mainly if you know Cliffs bio, Destroyer, and KBB cover to cover should get you into twenties. But IMO it is not guaranteed. Everything in DAt Bio comes from the Campbell Biology, so it is worth while to atleast skim it once or twice.
Toothpaste11 If you have the DAT guide from the ADA's website, it tells you what subject/topics to expect for the bio section. So that will def. help in reading the campbell textbook. I do agree it is huge and at times confusing, but I think it will be a good idea to familiarize ourselves with the enemy before the attack 😉

Apparently Cliff's is a little less in-depth in certain sections. But people also seem to think it's easier to get through. I might end up buying it and using it instead of Schaum's. If you're weak in a certain part of bio (for me, I know very little about classification or development), I'd recommend reading that section in Cliff's or Schaum's and then grab Campbell's or another introductory bio book and reading the corresponding sections for a more in-depth look.

The QR tests might be on ebay, not sure.

I've looked at Destroyer but it just seems so expensive, even used. I'm planning to work through Chad's videos and then if I still feel like o chem is just beyond me I might take the plunge. I also have my college o chem textbook to supplement, but I'm not sure how useful that will be.

hmm i looked at schwams and it seems a bit more challenging to understand/read as compared to cliffs.
also has anyone heard anything good about the product-Ace the DAT? its a website, you guys can google it. i had it last time i took the dat but i dont know if its worth renewing my subscription. Im looking for some online software for practice problems and im mostly on my macbook so id just use topscore in the daytime when im on my PC desktop downstairs but i like to do practice problems before bed/in bed. any suggestions?

I might take then too, depending if I am ready. I'm assuming you guys are applying next cycle, right? Taking the DAT then would just put you behind. Right now, I'm using the Kaplan course, KBB, Cliffs, Schuams. After I finish the course, I am gonna get Chads, destroyer, etc.

Yeah I am applying next cycle in the summer of 2012.
Good Luck! It's gonna be a hell of a ride 😎

I am taking the DAT in Aug, and think on the 27th as well. I am actually using all of the material that you guys are using. However, I am considering Dr. Flowers DAT - 16 weeks study material. Have any of you heard of it?

He gave me this 3 days free trial to check it out, so far I like. The only thing I don't like is that it has not full length practice tests, but plenty of subject tests.

Any comments on this?

Jarry

Hi Jarry, I have never heard of Dr. Flowers before, but sounds like a good DAT prep course. As far as I am concerned, I will really like plenty of subject tests. I am going to buy Achiever soon, which may take care of the full length practice tests.
Let me know if you end up buying the prep course.
How many questions are there?

I don't have AIM or skype, but maybe other peeps do. If you have any trouble with anything, you are always welcome to post here. We are there for you!

I suggest memorizing cliffs and then go to your local library and pluck out barron's. I don't know about other people but I felt that barron's did a better job on the classification section. ALSO, barron's explains things differently so what you may have glazed over in cliffs, you will definitely catch going through barrons.

Schaums is very lengthy and it has a lot more information than either barrons or cliffs but I feel that even that does not cover everything you need. I did read through schaums by the way... Maybe if you don't have the patience to go through campbells, this can substitute?

If I had to do it all over again I would read cliffs and barrons and then leisurely read through campbells. Although I think if you didn't major in bio... its even more important to read through campbells because to be quite honest I'm not sure how much knowledge I actually used from those ap bio books in the first place. A lot of it was from taking a lot of bio classes. Almost ridiculous how I spent more time studying for bio than all the other sections combined and still got a lower score. Kind of a complete crapshoot in my opinion :laugh:

I am going to use Cliffs, Barrons and Campbell.
Thanks 👍

How are you guys feeling about it??? i feel very discouraged lately and I feel like there is so much information and that I need to push it back.

I'm tentatively optimistic at this point.

You still have 1.3 months to rock this, just go at it hard.

YEAHHHHH I am in this thread, I have OFFICIALLY moved my date to August 5th and I am finally feeling good about this one. Third reschedule but I finally feel love the 5th: 1:30 PM and a friday so I can call it a weekend right after. Such an amazing appointment. Good luck everyone and I will be with you guys the entire way.

Hey guys!

I'll be taking the DAT in August as well! I'm currently using Cliff's Bio, KBB (got an extra copy from a friend taking the Kaplan course), Barron's and DAT Destroyer. I think I will be getting DAT Achiever and TopScore pretty soon here! I am just getting the exam out of the way so that way I won't have to begin studying for it next Spring Semester.

Any recommendations for the PAT? My Kaplan White Book does not cover it :/ And Crack DAT PAT is kind of costly. Do you think just working through the practice exams for PAT is enough to get the hang of it? I have done decently, but there is room for improvement.

Good luck, everyone! We can do it 🙂

I just took my DAT on the 20th of June and imo, PAT can vary from test to test. Some people say it's hard and some people say it's easy so if you want to be on the safe side, definitely go with more practice than not. Crack DAT PAT is pretty expensive but it definitely gives you the practice you need to score consistently. If you have the funds or if you're willing to stretch that wallet, definitely invest in Crack DAT PAT cause if anything, it'll give you the practice you need to feel confident about your PAT skills when you walk in to take the test. If you start panicking during PAT, bad things will happen...

Achiever and TopScore are also pretty good resources for PAT but I think PAT is something that you need to do over and over again to get better unless you're extremely gifted in your perceptual abilities.

I am scheduled to take the DAT in August.

I'm using...
A Kaplan review book.
Crack Dat Pat and Math and Reading.
Dat Destroyer.
Chads Chemistry videos.

If I'm not ready for the test when D-Day arrives, I'll hold off on storming the beaches. I'd rather have one good test than have to retake it in December.

Is taking the DAT August 3rd too late to get pre-December interviews?

I'm tentatively optimistic at this point.

You still have 1.3 months to rock this, just go at it hard.

I am also taking it in August and I know about feeling like it can't be done in such lil time but obviously with hard, hard studying it can!!! So I wish everyone luck and just study extremely hard!! No sleep, no friends, just the necessities for basic life for the next 6-8 weeks and then it will be all over for all of us!!!🙂

Im taking the DAT on Aug 21st and just turned in my app. Did you guys already turn in the application??

I took my DAT today...20/20 hindsight, I should have focused a lot more on certain aspects of bio, and I was a little too overconfident in my biology/QR abilities. But then again, I only used Kaplan BB, and Chad's for general chem. I got 18 QR, 18 bio, 18 ochem, 19 PAT, 23 RC and 23 GC. Kind of all over the place, but it comes out as 19 Total Science and 20 AA, which I am more than happy with considering everything. Good luck to all of you, having confidence helps times a million!!!

Hey thanks for the post! I am taking mine THIS Friday and needless to say COMPLETELY freaking out. But that's just me. EVERY test I have ever taken has freaked me out 😉 -Q for you though, how did you feel about the DAT overall? Did you feel that it was MORE than you were expecting as far as the level of difficulty? Or by chance was is a little easier than you had anticipated?😀 Gosh wouldn't that be nice!!! Can you break it down section by section as far as your expectations and what you actually experienced when you sat for your exam? Thank you so so so much.

Sure! I'd say overall it wasn't as dreadful as I was expecting...I was SO nervous as well, I have pretty bad test anxiety and I literally couldn't sleep the night before. Like my test was at 8 AM, and I went to bed and laid awake for about 7 hours...luckily I run well on no sleep haha.

I'll preface my breakdown by saying the only materials I used were Kaplan BB and Chad's for general chem (wish I used his videos for ochem!!)....so just FYI!

Biology: I thought that this section was fairly random. At school I've taken the general biology series, anatomy & physiology series, genetics, cell & molecular biology, and biochemistry...and I still only got an 18! My test seemed weirdly focused on animals, plants, and things about invertebrates...of course subjects I haven't covered in great detail. It wasn't awful but it was more detailed/less relevant than I was hoping.

General Chem: This section I did awesome, I scored a 13 on a practice test the week before my test date, and on the DAT I got a 23 so I was really happy! Chad's videos were amazing, the section seemed pretty straightforward overall, but you definitely need a solid understanding of the basics (acids/bases, ideal gases, etc). In my freshman undergrad chem class I did well but never REALLY understood the material, so I was pleasantly surprised by how well I was prepared for the test after doing Chad's videos and quizzes. Overall not bad!

O-chem: I wish I prepared more for this section because I did really well in my o-chem classes, so I know I could've done better (I got an 18) 🙁 It wasn't that it was super super hard, I just thought I had a better understanding of the material than I actually did.

PAT: This section was harder on the actual test than on my practice tests. The angles were literally IDENTICAL on some questions, and the hole punching had some bizarre triangular folds and such. I got a 19 here, which I was happy with, but try and find some harder practice questions beforehand so you kind of know what to expect!

Reading comp: I'm a fast reader and I literally didn't study for this section (unless you count the practice tests). I got a 23 here, didn't think it was too hard, I finished the section with 10 minutes to spare. My method is to read through the passage once, THEN answer the questions...at least for my passages, I found it was pretty easy to find the answers once I had read everything. Though there were a few weird questions about tone of voice/the author's opinion/etc. that I had never seen on a practice test, but it wasn't anything to worry about.

QR: This section is just kind of annoying to me, I feel like it isn't SUPER important to the adcoms and it's at the end of the test when all you want to do is leave the testing center haha...it wasn't too hard overall, just a bunch of algebra and lengthy word problems. I'm more of a calculus student myself, so it was a little difficult to revert back to freshman year of high school-level math, but for this section I would just say do a lot of practice problems to get used to doing them quickly. This was the only section where I felt pressed for time.

Sorry for the long-winded answer, hope this helps! It feels AMAZING to have the test over with...you're almost there!!!

WOW!!! Thank you so so so so much! I reeeeally appreciate your response and the time you took to go over each section 😛
I Needed that soooo bad. - Additionally, I've gone over Chad's videos and they are awesome however I have always struggled in O-chem- predicting products is sorta hard for me for some unknown reason - Honestly I think I just get intimidated by the sight of it!! Hahaha so I truly hope there's not too much of that action goin' on!!!

Anyhow, cant wait to have this DAT behind me. I really want to give this my very best shot!!!

-THX again!👍:xf::xf::xf:

I took mine today, but im a little discouraged by all of the wonderful scores I see on this site compared to mine! Anyhow, here goes:

Just eat a good breakfast, drink coffee, and take the optional 15 minute break. And be confident....I have a difficult time being confident before tests, but I tried super hard to be positive. I may or may not have repeated "I will do great on this test!" in my car on the way to the testing center.... 😀

Good luck, let me know how it turns out!!

Thanks again-

I just took my DAT today!
TS: 26
AA: 26
I did much better than I thought I would xD
The materials I used: DAT Destroyer, Math Destroyer, KBB, and CDP.

GREAT JOB WOOHOOOOOOOO! I take mine FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂 SOOOO SCARED! I have only used Chad's and Kaplan BB for OChem and am scoring 17's in Kaplan still!!!! ERG!!! I hope I make it out ok!!!!!

I hear that! Tomorrow morning is my big day and my biggest fear is all of this time and studying amounting to scores that are not good enough!!!!

very depressed by my scores.
I scored a 19.
Bio = 18
G.Chem = 18
O.Chem = 22
PAT = 19
RC = 19
QR = 16 🙁

I think I am screwed 🙁

Just came across this thread.

I took mine on the 16th.

I used Kaplan (waste), Chad's (awesome), DAT destroyer and CDP.

I'm happy with my scores. Woot!

Your scores are well rounded with exception on the QR. Luckily, QR is not one of the make or break scores. Hopefully you have a good GPA and LORs. And depending on where you are applying, you may be golden!

My GPA is 3.72 and Science GPA is 3.5, I want to apply to University of Louisville School of Dentistry. I am in my senior year and have some electives left to take. I am very depressed with my scores, I got extremely nervous while taking the test and couldn't manage time at all 🙁
I wish they would let us re-take after one month 🙁
