  1. If you think that one or more of the following interests apply to you, check the appropriate box(es) and list specific experiences (academic, co-curricular, employment, personal, etc.) related to and supportive of this interest in the text box provided below. Do not use a paragraph format; list in bulleted format. (Can check boxes for "interest in establishing medical practice in an underserved area", "interested in a career in research", "interested in a career in teaching", and "interested in a career in primary care medicine".)
  2. In the text box provided below, describe the setting in which you envision conducting your medical career. Also include how and why you think this setting would help fulfill your interests related to the practice of medicine.

Good luck :luck:

Submitted this one today! Good luck to all!

Any advice is appreciated: Took MCAT this past April and scored a 31R. GPA is a 4.0 (science and overall) still. Have decent hours/activities in almost all areas of the application, though I feel my community service specifically is shorter than I'd like it to be. Was told that most 32 MCAT/3.6 gpa applicants get interviews and that a higher GPA can make up for a close-to-32 MCAT. Think I have a shot? I love SW and am really hoping I can at least get an interview.

I know someone who got an interview at UTSW with a 31 MCAT and worse GPA, so you definitely have a shot! Also, I talked to the admissions director this week, and she said they thoroughly review every application twice before deciding on an interview, so they take more than scores into consideration.

Does UTSW only have an MD/PhD program.. no MD only ?

Weird, the MD option wasn't on the AMCAS application, I believe.. I'll have to check again.

Just in general:

To apply to MD in Texas (excluding Baylor), you need to apply through TMDSAS

To apply to MD/PhD, MD/MPH or something similar in Texas, you need to apply through AMCAS (there are some exceptions, like the MD/PhD program at UT-SA)

You have to go through TMDSAS to apply MD.

Wow, thanks!! I had NO idea.

you have a guaranteed interview then after that good luck

How long should the first essay on the secondary application be? Has anyone gotten there yet?

The one about the setting of your medical career? On the app, it said it should be 500 words or less if possible..

I meant the "check which apply to you". I guess it's not a true essay.

Got it! For that one, I just listed 2-3 bullet points (a couple lines of text) to support each statement I checked. I tried to keep it fairly brief.

I just wanted to stop in and wish everyone good luck! I am an incoming MS1 and very excited to start school in August! If you guys have any questions about the application process let me know and hopefully I can answer them or refer you to someone who can.

Just got an email from Southwestern saying that they have received my application and have begun to review applications! Really looking forward to hearing back from them. Good luck everyone!

utsw's mission statement says one of their primary goal is to have people who want to go into primary care. is this actually true?

I assume that's just for IS? Because if it's also for OOS then sa-weeeet!

when you preview the secondary, does everyone have a dash next to their tmdsas id?

I wish I had printed off my secondary before I submitted it. There doesn't seem to be a way to view it again after you've submitted.

hownow,

I was hoping you could address some of these questions:
Did you have a lot of shadowing?
What kind of applicants do you think UTSW accepts? Well-rounded, focused on research, high stats, etc.?
How much do you think they value leadership positions?

Thanks!

Did you guys receive a email confrimation when you submitted your secondary?

Did anyone else have trouble logging in to get to the secondary?

This is the website I'm having trouble with: https://sws004.swmed.edu/gateway2/login.aspx

I've created an account, however the site states it is unable to authenticate my credentials. I've also reset my password a few times.

Thanks!

edit: I managed to get in by using my email address (used all caps) rather than the UN they gave me.

Shadowing-not that much. I think I shadowed an ENT for 12 hours, a FP for 4 and an anesthesiologist for 20. And I had a year and a half of hospital volunteering.

Applicants- they definitely accept a variety, but I would say everyone they accepted had something unique in their application-not just the plain cookie cutter applicant. I think they also give some 'automatic' interview invites if you are IS with at least a 3.7 GPA and 32 MCAT BUT I have seen people with much lower stats get an interview and then subsequently get in. At least once you have an interview you are on a somewhat even playing field. Also, on the secondary you will want to indicate you have an interest in something-even if its only a meh feeling.

Leadership-I think every school values leadership. But make sure that its something that you are passionate about or at least sound passionate about.

If you guys are fortunate enough to get an interview make sure you come across as a real person, not just some crazy neurotic pre-med who only does various activities to pad their resume. Those people stand out like a sore thumb.

Good luck to all. I submitted my secondary app last week. The wait between now and interview season will kill me

UT- Southwestern just sent me an email saying that they received my application from TMDSAS. It was transmitted early June. It also noted that the application review process has begun.... :scared:

I transmitted early June. Never got that email though.

I've heard they recently changed the grading scheme here (Pass/Fail first semester, non-curved grading scheme afterwards).

(1) Is the Pass/Fail deal unranked?
(2) For any current students here, have you noticed a significant difference in the students who came in under the new grading scheme vs. the students who went through under the old scheme? I heard that UTSW used to be like a hornet's nest of gunners.

Hey, just finished my first year here.

1) P/F is completely unranked, all that goes into your transcript is a P or an F
2) Talking to some of the students who interviewed this past cycle (incoming first years), they say theres a noticeable difference between the upper and lower classmen here. Recent classes have definitely not been full of gunners, in fact, I've yet to meet one. Everybody's been very helpful, people often share review sheets and other study materials with the whole class.

If you have any other questions feel free to PM me

I'm 95% sure that the auto-invite rumor came from the Dean of Admissions himself.

Yeah... I haven't gotten any emails of any sort from UTSW.

Thank you for that info-very helpful.

One more question I was hoping or anyone can answer. Are you getting any merit based fin. aid?

Thanks!

Good luck to everyone this cycle!!! Also will be an MS1 at UTSW this August if y'all have any questions 🙂

Received message that secondary application was received. Submitted secondary 5/18.

I received notification of secondary receipt right after I submitted it yesterday. Then I got another notification e-mail this morning. 😕 At first I thought I might've accidentally clicked "submit" twice...

Same here. Any news on UTH,TTU or UTMB for the others? or TCOM?
