There has been quite a bit of disagreement about touching the screen during the DAT, so I e-mailed the ADA ([email protected]). Here are the questions that I asked and the response from ADA:

I have a couple of questions about the DAT and I have heard conflicting answers. I want to make sure I follow the rules, so could you please clarify:
1) Are we allowed to touch the screen? (i.e. Can we cover up the tail of an angle with our fingers on angle ranking questions?)
2) Can we hold two objects over the screen to rank angles? (i.e. laminated paper or credit cards)
3) If not, are we allowed to hold our thumb/fingers near our eyes?
4) If any of the above are not allowed, what happens if someone gets caught violating these rules?

Thank you for contacting the ADA with your questions. You are not allowed to touch the computer screen or hold your hands or any objects up to the computer screen. You are also not allowed to hold your hands, thumbs, fingers or any objects near your eyes. The reason for this is that your hands, fingers and other objects are considered measuring devices. Taking any of these actions would be considered a violation of the DAT regulations.

In your last email you asked what would happen if you got caught violating these regulations. If you are caught violating the regulations for the DAT your scores will be voided, you may be prevented from retaking the DAT for up to two years and there may also be civil and legal penalties.

This means that those who drew a protractor on their hand needs to actually use their perceptual ability to do the angles now.

Thats still nothing compared to what adcoms will think when they see that one of your old DATs was voided out due to a cheating incident.

You should send a follow-up email and ask:

"Since many proctors are unaware of the this rule, how would one get caught violating it?"

This should generate a response as to what they actually do when they audit test results, and whether getting caught is simply a matter of a proctor reporting your violation to ADA. Thus, if the proctor is unaware and doesn't report, then ADA will never find out (assuming they don't view the video when auditing test results.)

Also, ask if you can touch the screen on other sections besides PAT. I like to sometimes use my finger in RC as it makes it easier to read at a steady fast pace.

This is a really good point haha. Did you ever get this answer?

I don't recommend touching the screen. Too risky to come this far and jeopardize your chances of dental school. How would you explain to schools that your DAT scores were disqualified due to reasons of cheating?

good heads-up info to know. Good thing i don't use my fingers or paper to help me visualize on angle section.

I think the test center people are too busy laughing their as ss off watching us move our heads in all sorts of directions trying to get better visuals on the angles.
