Hey guys🙂
I know. It's ANOTHER chance me thread.
I just got rejected to the only school I applied (w/o interview) and now I'm looking into States Dent Schools.
I go to one of the best Canadian Schools and I will be graduating with a bio degree. my stats are:
cGPA: 3.48
sGPA: 3.45
BCP: 3.18
Hopefully by the end of this year I will end up with
c:3.55
s:3.55
BCP: 3.3

my DAT score is AA:21,(SCI:20), PAT:21 and carving 27 (but I know they don't look at this)

I have no shadowing hours but I'm going to get some over the year.
My ECs are pathetic (just some club work and volunteering for the aboriginal ppl in reserve, church stuff)

I don't know where to apply but since I'm Canadian probably some private school right?
Which schools should I prepare to apply to for the next round?

Thanks in advance

Also I was wondering if PSYCH counts as Science or non-science?

Also, should I take the American DAT?
Which schools accept Canadian ones? I tried to find the list but everyone seems to say different things.

The best place to start your research into US Dental Schools is to order the ADEA Guide. It has all the admissions info such as pre-requisite classes, what GPA/DAT scores to strive for (based on past years), if they accept cDAT or aDAT, estimated tuition costs (it will be very expensive to attend as a Canadian student!), and if they accept non-US applicants. Good luck!

Satisfactory GPA, good Dat (good job!). You Errol partition the first filtration system and might get an interview, but limited ec's could be a problem. But keep in mind, its not line your have to be a dental assistant or something to have good ec's. . Just get some shadowing under your belt and you should be fine imo

let me guess...

UBC?

me too... feels batman 🙁

get SOME EC and shadowing hours. they don't count for much, but it just looks bad when you have none in that section.

try to boost gpa as much as possible. I have a higher GPA/DAT than most US applicants and got a lot less interviews because i'm international (aka canadians).

most important is to apply to canada friendly US schools like NYU or boston U.

and really do buy the ADEA book. it sucks to spend $40 on a book, but if i bought it, it would've saved me about $250 in wasted application fee and might have given me more interviews.

Oh yea, work when you have free time (and make time for EC). flying to state for interview, hotel, car rental, etc... are expensive

Without shadowing experience, it may be difficult to convince anyone that you are serious about a career in dentistry.

I actually did volunteer at an dentist's office but didn't officially 'shadow'. I started with file work and cleaning equipments and ended up doing a bit of shadowing. However, this is from high school.

Thanks for the advice! So I guess we do need higher GPA than the average shown at predent website.

The predents website has old information in the little fact boxes for each school. I think that was at least 2-3 cycles ago. All the GPA's and DAT scores have definitely gone up. Buy the newest ADEA book, it has the latest numbers.

But yes, as a Canadian, you need a higher GPA and DAT then average.

1st post here 😛 I was wondering why canadians require higher than average stats if they apply to private schools, I was under the impression that they did not distinguish applicants based on where they are from??

As a Canadian, you're considered an international applicant. There's a lot more seats for American applicants. As an Canadian, you want higher then average stats because it's quite competitive for those international seats. You're not doing yourself any favors if you have a 3.3 GPA and a 19 DAT while the ten other Canadians applying have 3.7s and 21s.

Also I'm wondering do schools use ABCDF gpa conversion or A+ A A- ...so on ?
My GPA is different for both.
I know I should buy the book but I'm going to wait for the 2013 edition to come out🙂!

AADSAS does both calculations and schools can see it all.

Also how big are they on dat?
Is it considered as much as your GPA?
I'm retaking the canadian DAT this feb to improve my scores (preferably bio which was only 19! 🙁 ).
If I can get 22 or over would that greater my chances? or is it better to just focus on improving my GPA?

Do both, get the 22 and improve your GPA.

Oh and do you know how much DAT can compensate for low GPA? To secure an interview spot as an international student to BU or NYU or if I want to have a chance of getting into Tuft/Michigan (my Dream school) or Upenn?

My stats are basically 3.5 for science and 3.2 for BCP and DAT: AA(21), PAT(21)

Has Tuft admitted any Canadians in the past few years? I thought somebody who bought the book said no, but I might have remembered wrong. Maybe it's another school...
