Hey everyone!

So my story is here to give people who think they don't have a chance of getting into pharmacy a message that anything is possible.

I started my pre-pharmacy requirements at UIC in 2005 and got accepted into a private pharmacy program 2 years later. I was really ecstatic and excited to start pharmacy and be free (I was commuting from home during my pre-pharmacy years) and live on campus. Upon starting pharmacy school, I immediately got involved in many organizations and clubs and taking up many leadership roles. However, as the year progressed, I became more and more busy with the organizations and less with my school work. With sports and partying, my grades slipped and I failed a major pharmacy class which I had to retake over the summer. It was tough when everyone was celebrating being finished with school and I was going to be there for another 3 months, but I didn't take it too hard. Although I only had one class, I failed it again and was dismissed from the university. I appealed to the board and my appeal was rejected. It was end of august and I had no school to go to. Parents and friends were devastated and I had no desire to continue my education or anything else. However, I knew I had to keep going and keep working towards my goal. I was too late to be readmitted to UIC and therefore had to search for a school that will accept me that close to the new semester. I found a small Christian university near my house and was able to get acceptance and register for a few classes that will help me when I return to UIC to finish my B.S. degree. After one semester, I returned to UIC and completed my B.S. degree in a year and a half. I graduated with a 3.26 but I was finally a college graduate with a B.S. degree in biochemistry!

In regards to pharmacy, I continued my goal while I was a senior at UIC and worked as a pharmacy tech, volunteered at a hospital, and doing some research as well. I was accepted into UIC COP as an early admit in January 2010 which was 5 months prior to me graduating which was quite a sigh of relief! Since graduating with my B.S. degree I have completed my first two years of pharmacy school with flying colors and have had two amazing internships, leadership roles, research, and publications. Overall, coming from a place where no one wants to even be to where I am today, I feel that anyone can get into pharmacy or any career that they want to.

Please let this be a story that you can pass on to others to motivate and provide example that anything is possible. Let me know if you have any questions or comments! Hope to hear from you all and best of luck!

What a relief to read something positive like this, considering all of the psychopathic stuff people on here like to moan and groan about. Congratulations, and good luck to you, too.

OP's story is definitely not the norm and OP is definitely not the norm. Miracles can happen if you have the drive to go for it and never give up! 🙂

This is definitely motivation for us future pharmacists.

I read this and thought of this picture instantly.

I wanted to know I went to a CC college and spent a 1 yr there then transfered to a 4yr university and then transferred to another university because i didnt like the college i was attending. I have not received my BA degree yet in this new university I am going to be academically dismissed i had a lot of personal things happen since i transferred to this university in my recent school i did 1 yr of research with the professor this semester gpa will be below a 2.0. I wanted to know i am going to attend a CC college and pass all my sciences what are my chances now of getting into a pharmacy school when i have been academically dismissed

be honest i am still planning to go to pharmacy school i have 5 yrs of tech experience 2 works published just my grades are killing me i am a senior and hopefully my school will not dismiss me.
thank you

Your chances are slim..I heard people need 3.0 GPA and 65+ PCAT to have a shot at pharmacy these days.

I am surprised how many people there are on this website trying to discourage others from pursuing their dreams. I came here looking for advice on pharmacy and pharmacy school, but didnt expect to find so many downers and pessimist. If I want that, Ill just go to my job. Some are trolls, some are real, but remember that is just one opinion and if you are really passionate about becoming a pharmacist you wont let those people affect your decision and goals. If you let people like that influence you and change you mind so easily, pharmacy or not, that person is going to have a hard time achieving anything. Downers and doubters will always be there no matter what career you chose. Just go with your gut and do what comes from the heart.

Not necessarily. Look again.

Higher tier schools need at least 3.0 GPA and 65+ PCAT, if required, to even be considered. Less than that and consider the application thrown in the trash.

FelixRX, you're more than welcome to apply below these values if you wish. Last time I checked, there's no minimum threshold to apply. Anyone can apply with a 1.0 GPA and 10% PCAT. Passion is definitely a factor in admissions but you won't be able to show it if you are not selected for an interview and application gets thrown in the garbage.

Average Admission Statistics as per their websites examples:
Rank # 1 USCF: 3.6 GPA; No PCAT required
Rank # 3 University of Minnesota: 3.56 GPA; PCAT data not available
Rank # 4 University of Texas - Austin: 3.6 GPA; 80% PCAT
Rank # 5 University of Wisconsin - Madison: 3.6 GPA; 80% PCAT

Here's a lower ranking school just for kicks.
Rank # 48 University of Houston: 3.57 GPA; 60% PCAT minimum required

I don't see what temperature101 said wrong. Sure, people can get in by having the bare minimum. People with 3.0 GPA can get into dental, medical, optometry, pharmacy, whatever school but I'm sure they have had significant experience or have accomplished something extraordinary.

Someone that did badly and made minimal efforts is probably not going to be a good applicant any way. Additionally, someone with bad work ethics like that I definitely would not trust my life to.

Exactly! No school is going to accept you with a 2.0 GPA but if you have a 3.0 along with strong LORs, good PCAT score(80 and above), well written personal statement, and show interest in the field by shadowing a pharmacist, working as a technician, or volunteering, it will give you the definite edge. Its about having a well-balanced application that shows your strong points in all areas and makes you a worthy applicant.
