MD/PhD or MD/MS (Bioethics)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
there is a post about this in the md/phd forum that has some information about it.

apparently he doesn't post with jot anymore..^^

I did a master's in bioethics before starting medical school. it was a great opportunity for me to integrate my interests in philosophy and medicine before being throwin into the science-heavy medical school curriculum. i am now an MSII and don't use any of my bioethics knowledge...as yet.

i did the master's at a different school than my medical school, so i can't comment on doing a joint degree. however, i did know some students who did joint degree. most of them did it after their four years of med school. that's probably the best way, in my opinion.

i did the masters at UPENN so i know that you had to be admitted to the MD before adding the MA in a joint degree (or any other conjoint degree: MBA, JD, etc.). Some tried the MA first to bolster their application to MD at PENN, but as far as i can tell, it didn't help to the extent they had hoped.

hope this helped.

It did help. Thanks for the insight. Do you know of anyone who did or is doing an MD/PhD in bioethics perhaps?

there are but a few straight phd bioethics programs in the country. most bioethics depts offer only masters degrees. others are doctorates in philosophy w/ a concentration in bio-ethics. georgetown, pitt, and u chicago i think have straight bioethics phds...and maybe uva.

a good site to find out more about the phd/master's in bioethics is www.bioethics.net...PENN's bioethics site.

i personally don't know of anyone currently in an md/phd bioethics program. but the graduate studies director at PENN, if emailed, would be happy to lead u down the right track...i know him, he's great.

best
