Many schools do not accept credits from abroad while some schools will accept credit if your home college accepts it. I took genetics (ish) and biochem(ish) abroad. These are courses that are not explicitly required by any schools I applied to but are considered good courses to have taken and some of my schools recommend them. I now have these pseudo pre reqs on my transcript without taking any core pre reqs abroad. I have had a few interviewers ask about science education differences between America and abroad so it made for good conversation as a bonus.

Edit: you won't know for sure until you make a list of schools you are interested in and find out each school's preference.

I'm reading that taking pre-reqs or upper biology classes while studying abroad is a terrible idea because the credits will not be counted. Is this true?
Even international applicants from prestigious universities of English-speaking countries are required to retake all their prerequisites at a US or Canadian college. There are few exceptions to this general rule.

@lionWushi: My guess would be that if it isn't an explicit requirement of the school, it won't matter. But some schools do require classes like "upper-level Bio", statistics, behavioral science, and Biochem, so take care about making assumptions.

A lot of countries outside the U.S. structure their university science curricula very differently. Depending on where you go and what type of program you do, it may be difficult to find the exact course that corresponds to an American prerequisite, and the lab component and expected background knowledge may not map onto what you need. (e.g., this is the undergrad chemistry curriculum at the university where I studied abroad; if you were trying to fill your premed organic chem requirement, which course would you take?)
