Hypothesis based research is generally what they are looking for. So probably depending on your topic?

Lets say you're a science major and you want to do research. Does it have to be either bench or clinical research? or would different type of research (behavioral psychology research for example) is okay to have on your application? Thanks

I am in a psychology lab at my university. As long as you are exposed to the scientific method first-hand you should be good no matter what field your research is in.

As an undergrad, it's generally better to start out with bench research. You have a lot more time to devote to it, it's very strongly hypothesis based, and a great insight into how basic science works. Doing clinical research as an undergrad will mostly consist of inputting data. A lot of the scientific thinking has been done already.

Obviously there are exceptions and many undergrads get stuck doing "grunt work" like washing dishes in a bench research lab while there are undergrads who get to really get into the hypothesis driven side of clinical research.

As said above. I think bench sciences gives you a better opportunity to really partake in pretty intense research. I did some clinical research in emergency med and it was interviewing patients. But at the end of the day, it was me sifting through pts to find the ones that meet the right inclusive factors to collect data. The hypothesis about the study was already made and I had no process in that. Whereas my honors research program allowed me to do my own project.

Pick first what you are interested in. And then branch from there. But that doesn't mean jump from lab to lab. If you dedicate and commit yourself to one lab you'll have a better opportunity to help in creating the project.
