I am curious though. Could he go overseas and practice overseas? Or maybe even caribean and then a U.S. residency.

An underage drinking ticket is bad enough let alone TWO DUI'S, POACHING, and an IA?? Yeah, it's over for him . . . There are plenty of people with his stats and just as good of activities I'm sure . . . No matter what he wants to do, he needs to GET IT TOGETHER BRO!!

The Caribbean route is rarely viable even for people who don't also have DUIs so I doubt it. He could probably go to a med school in like Uruguay and practice there.

Yeah he very likely could go Caribbean and then to Africa. He could not go Caribbean and then back to America.

Bottom line: unless he is willing to leave the country, he will not be a doctor.

I would highly imagine those DUIs have completely eliminated him.
Well, I'd say fighting or anything with violence is worse than a DUI. Maybe he was completely wasted and swerving- but many DUIs are from checkpoints where the driver is performing adequately but was still over the safe limit or even just caught sleeping in a car after drinking too much. But you're right that pretty much 2 of anything is very bad as it shows that he didn't reform himself. (Although I have heard of a prominent trauma surgeon with 2 DUIs- though it happened after he was already an attending.)

OP: Practicing overseas may be possible. But the problem with overseas (e.g. Caribbean) -> US residency is that residency program directors are wary of American Carribean-school grads for exactly this reason. The good news is that the fighting incident won't show up at that stage. Still, the most likely result would be him ending up with no residency offers.

I'd reject him before going into the interview room....unless he was, say, 31, and had led an exemplary life.

But this is someone who not only clearly doesn't learn his lessons, but also has impulse control issues, and thinks the rules don't apply to him. People like him kill families like mine.

And stop with the .02 crap. He's OVER the limit. Whether you fail an exam by 1 point or 40, you still fail.

I have a friend who is headstrong and is convinced we will get into medical school.
He has 2 DUI's (one he was over .02 when under 21 and one he was over .08 after being 21). He also had two incidents with fish and wildlife for poaching and shooting at a decoy from a road I am assuming he got misdemeanor's for both. He within the last year got an IA for fighting on campus the criminal charges were dropped, but got put on probation from the school (fines, counseling etc). he has roughly a 3.5 with an upward trend from last years of roughly 3.8 and some good volunteer activities and will have a doctors write good letters for him. Are his chances zero? Or will would any schools take a chance on him?

Very well said. I wish I could give you more than just one "like."
