It will only help if you truly have a passion for it. Otherwise, you might end up hating it and doing way worse like you said so yourself.
 
Since I love history, I'm probably the only Adcom member for whom it will make a difference.

All others don't care what your major or minor is, just that you do well.

Wrapping up sophomore year here, interested in history and thinking about minoring in it (only 5 classes needed, two will probably be taken abroad). Should I pursue it in hopes of learning interesting information + maybe even stand out a little? Or just take more sciences? I wouldn't be too sad about not taking history classes because it's definitely a risk (it would look pretty bad to not get As in history), but I do imagine myself getting pissed when I have an orgo 2 exam and a buttload of history readings in the same week...
 
If you were to double major with history on the other hand... That would probably be more interesting to see.
