12 month ortho programs?

Oh my goodness gracious! Did you look at the tuition for some of these joker programs! University of the Pacific costs just over $56,000 per year!???? Who do these guys think they are? Its like legalized extorsion! I can't believe anyone would even apply to them. I paid like almost 28k per year for dental school and i thought that was rediculous. Now i pay 10k per year for medical school and i'm lovin' it.

Don't overlook the opportunity cost of potential earned income by spending extra years in school... If you could pay 65K and do ortho in 1-2years vs 3 then it would likely be a bargain assuming the training was adequate. When I think about how much money I could make vs spending the 2 extra years in med school it is nauseating.

I'm a graduate of BUSDM, I believe the program there is 25 months for CAGS which is certificate of advanced graduate study and 25+12 months for CAGS+MSD and 25+36 months for CAGS+DScD.

check out the website:

Exactly, this is an optional extra year of research and thesis after the 2 year ortho residency. If you want to be aggro you could get another doctorate too instead of the masters.

No, this was private Marquette University. I am a WI resident so i got an 11,000 break on tuition each year though. I still think making a RESIDENT!!!! pay any tuition let alone a 56,000$ one is just absolutely rediculous. People who already have the doctorate shouldn't be paying any tuition for residency, it should be set up in a way that the residents make the school enough money for the tuition and the stipend.

I applied to all of those ridiculously overpriced programs and would have attended them too because several, like BU, NYU, Tufts, UPenn (2 years), Harvard & Columbia (3 years) are in the northeast. I have relatively low debt from my state dental school.

However, maybe it's a good thing I didn't get invited to any of those mad expensive programs this time around - not gonna complain about having less debt. I'm hoping to make it out of my 3 years in ortho residency with under 90K.

BTW, for the OP, ortho programs used to be shorter. Buffalo was 18 months for the certificate for the class that finished in 1991. Some attending on the interview trail this year was reminiscing about the days when ortho programs were 1 year long, but I think he was talking about the 1950s - wasn't really paying attention.

I imagine they charge because they can. They know there will be plenty of people willing and able to pay the price.
