Third year at a Northeastern Allopathic Program, Step 1:228. 2 high passes, 1 pass so far in my rotations...

I'm trying to choose between EM vs IM, 60/40 in favor of EM because I like the fast-paced environment and the idea of getting first dibs on an A&P. That being said, I have only done IM and won't get a chance at EM until 4th year.

However... my mentor told me she's wary of my chances of matching into EM with my grades so far, and that most of my classmates who are into EM have started making their name known in our ED since first year... And that the people who match from our school into EM mostly get honors during their clinical year although that's reserved for the top 1/10 of our class..

It seems based off the stats I'm in an OK but not great spot, but I don't want to fight an uphill battle I can't win... My mentor went over the the NRMP, ERAS, PD survey with me but she's still not confident in my chances...

You're a third year? You're fine. Improve with step 2, and do well on your EM auditions.

Thanks! I appreciate it I'll try talking to more people at my school. It's just disconcerting because the NRMP is an amazing resource, but at the same time my mentor is also someone who I trust and would never try to dissuade me unless she had serious concerns about my chances.
